EVENT: A History of Performance in 20 Minutes by Guillaume Désanges
FADO and Gallery TPW are pleased to present an exhibition and performance by
Guillaume Desanges (with Hélène Meisel)
Gallery TPW
56 Ossington Avenue, Toronto
Child’s Play (exhibition): June 10-19, 2010
A History of Performance in 20 Minutes (performance): Thursday June 10, 7:30pm

A History of Performance in 20 Minutes is a performative lecture presenting a concise history of the representation of the body in art. The performance-lecture aims to divide the history of performance into ten gestures - appearing, receiving, holding back, escaping, aiming, falling, crying, biting, empting oneself and disappearing – all enacted and subjectively discussed.

Accompanying the performance is Désanges’ exhibition Child’s Play. The work is the outcome of a workshop with seven Romanian children in 2008. The impetus for the workshop was an assertion that the history of performance art be read as a history of silence rather than discourse – a pre-linguistic history of primary gestures. Perhaps the experience of childhood is closest to this impulse in performance/body art. During the workshop, the kids replayed and interpreted more than fifty iconic performances, including gestures from Futurism and Dada to Paul McCarthy and Francis Alys. The resulting videos and drawings embody the immediate energy, humor, and embrace of the experiential experiment that is essential for an understanding of performance and body art.

EVENT: FADO Performance Art Centre is pleased to present
Feast or Famine by Lori Blondeau
Friday June 11, 2010
4:00 - 6:00pm
Butterfield Park at OCAD
100 McCaul Street, Toronto

FADO is pleased to present a new performance work by Lori Blondeau. Entitled Feast and/or Famine, the artist creates an image of the hard at work Indian Princess/Squaw, preparing the fire and gathering place, juxtaposed with a modern day feast (the BBQ) that brims over with plenty but feeds no one at the gathering.

"The images of the Indian Princess and Squaw have had a significant impact on societies’ perception of Indian women and serve as inspirations for most of my work. Surprisingly, we still see popularized images of the Indian Princess being created by both native and non-native people. You can find these products being sold in Indian Museums and souvenir shops across North America. These are testament to the general public’s idealized perception of beautiful Native women as being exotic and hard to find – virtually non-existent. The other side of the Indian Princess is, of course, the squaw – another of societies’ iconic scapegoats meant to desensitize both the general public’s view of Indian women (their political, historical and social issues as well), and the self perception among Native women themselves.

My work explores the influence of popular media and culture (contemporary and historical) on Aboriginal self-identity, self-image, and self-definition. I am currently exploring the impact of colonization on traditional and contemporary roles and lifestyles of aboriginal women. I deconstruct the images of the Indian Princess and the Squaw and reconstruct an image of absurdity and insert these hybrids into the mainstream. The performance personas I have created refer to the damage of colonialism and to the ironic pleasures of displacement and resistance."  ~Lori Blondeau

2. CONFERENCE: Arts interdisciplinaires: Hi-Tech, Lo-Tech, No-Tech?
Dates: OVER (but still good info); Source: Victoria Stanton (sorry for the lateness, V!)

It is with great pleasure that the Regroupement des arts interdisciplinaires du Québec, in association with the MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels) and ECLECTIK 2010, announces the first edition of its annual conference, this year’s theme being: Arts interdisciplinaires: Hi-Tech, Lo-Tech, No-Tech?

The two-day conference will showcase the intersection of technologies being researched and practiced in the interdisciplinary arts, while exploring the ways in which artists embrace, appropriate, question, even dismiss “technology” – towards artistic ends. Artist talks, performances, round-table discussions, workshops, and installation will take place at the MAI, 3680 Jeanne-Mance in Montreal, on May 28th and 29th, 2010, starting at 9:30am on Friday morning. The installation will be on view as of May 26th at articule, 262 Fairmount West, Montreal.

Opening the program on Friday May 28th will be two talks: Natacha Clitandre (Montreal) discusses creative transmission through mobile devices while Nate Larson & Marni Shindelman (Baltimore and Rochester, USA) address the links between GPS technology and artistic creation. At 1:00pm the three artists offer practical workshops and demonstrations related to their morning presentations. Later in the afternoon, a performative lecture by the Office for Archival Review (Montreal) on the subject of archival practices – based on the archives of conference participants – will be followed by Devora Neumark (Montreal), who uses the “The Jewish  Home Beautiful” community play as starting point into a critical case study of interdisciplinarity. Following that, a presentation from Kelly Jaclynn Andres on non-verbal communication includes a practical demo in the form of a city bike-ride. At 5:30pm, program director Claude Schryer, and program officer Sue-Ellen Gerritsen, will be on hand to answer questions concerning recent changes to the Inter-Arts section at the Canada Council for the Arts.

Saturday May 29th, the day will commence with a lecture by Doyon-Demers (Quebec), on the notion of the "un-artist" and of an "undisciplinary" art. Following will be a performance by Sophie Castonguay (Montreal), who creatively deconstructs our relationship to technology, then a round-table entitled Wetwares: When biology and art meet – moderated by Tagny Duff and bringing together Alison Lauder, Kelly Jaclynn Andres, Vanessa Rigaux, Claire Kenway and Antonia Hernandez (Montreal). In the afternoon a second panel discussion, The Territories of Technology: up to what point…and why? – gives the floor over to Anna Biró (Montreal), Lynne Heller (Toronto), Radwan Moumneh (Montreal) and karen elaine spencer (Montreal). The day will wrap up with a presentation by kondition pluriel (Montreal), reflecting on their ten years of interdisciplinary creations, and an excerpt of the performance AVATAR, by Freya Olafson (Winnipeg).

The installation Abandoned, by kondition pluriel, will be on view from May 26th to 30th at articule, 262 Fairmount West. All are invited to attend the vernissage and 10th anniversary cocktail celebration for kondition pluriel on May 26th at 7pm.

Finally, starting at 7pm on the evenings of the 28th and 29th, the MAI presents the third edition of ECLECTIK, its annual multidisciplinary event dedicated to artistic expression. Sharing the theme of the RAIQ conference, Hi-Tech, Lo-Tech, No-Tech?, this spectacular showcase will bring together close to 30 artists working in dance, music, performance, installation, and more. Two evenings of discoveries, exchanges and pleasure not to be missed! Information: http://www.m-a-i.qc.ca / 514 982 3386

5. EVENT: Performance Studies International Conference 2010

Dates: June 9-11, 2010; Source: Laura Levin

Performing Publics is the first official performance studies conference to be held in Canada. The conference is organized by York University and the Ontario College of Art and Design in collaboration with Performance Studies international, the largest international group of performance studies scholars that meets each year in a different world city. The conference will bring together for the first time many of Canada's top scholars working on performance from   different disciplinary perspectives (including theatre, visual arts, anthropology, environmental studies, cultural studies) and will expose international researchers to vibrant traditions of Canadian performance scholarship. The conference itself will theorize the relationship between performance, "official" public culture, and the production of what Michael Warner calls "counter-publics," social formations developed in opposition to the discourses and interests of the official public sphere. As such, it will explore the coming together of individuals as a social totality -- as a community, nation, organization -- and the enactment of "public" as a form of social activism, as a means of rehearsing, querying, and producing alternative forms of local and global citizenship. In both contexts, performance has the potential to frame affective and critically nuanced responses to public events, issues and crises and thus to model politically and ethically engaged forms of public life. The conference also seeks to problematize the idea of "publics" as it has been applied to performance by exploring the limitations of this term and the kinds of social exclusions that it often has been used to rationalize.

The conference runs from June 9-13, 2010, and will primarily take place at the Ontario College of Art & Design. For more information or to register for the conference, please go to our website: http://psi16.com

As Alastair would say, “Performing knitting….”

7. EVENT: Worldwide Knit in Public Day Guiness World Record Attempt
Date: June 12, 2010: Source: Carol Barrett

Saturday June 12, 1:00-4:00
Junction Square (2945 Dundas at Pacific, Toronto)

The 2nd Sunday in June is Worldwide Knit in Public Day (WWKIP Day for those in the know). The celebration started in Europe in 2005, and is rapidly gaining popularity, thanks to the rise of knitting (and other traditional needle crafts) among a whole new generation of hipsters who dig handmade.

June 12, three organizations are taking over Junction Square (the Junctions uniquely wonderful empty lot and common area) to not only brazenly knit in public, but to try to break the Guinness World Record for most knitters in one place at one time!  The event is the brainchild of Michelle Van Looy of That’s Womens Work, who teamed up with Mary Breen of Wise Daughters Craft market this spring to set the ball (of yarn) rolling. Because Wise Daughters is already associated with Streetknit project, a non profit that collects hand-knit woollies for Toronto’s homeless, collaboration among all three partners was perfect.

Participants are encouraged to donate what they knit (that day or anytime) to Streetknit. Wise Daughters (3079 B Dundas St. West) is a drop off point for donations of woollies, yarn and needles. Streetknit meets the last Tuesday of each month at the shop for an evening of knitting and chatting all year round.

Novices and experts alike are invited to bring a lawn chair some needles and yarn and to be part of history!!!  There will be live entertainment, refreshments and prizes, as well as beginner knitting classes on the spot.  The count for the world record will take place at 3 pm sharp.

To find out more about the Junction Guinness World Record attempt, visit www.wisedaughters.com or www.thatswomenswork.com

To learn about Streetknit, other drop off points and knitting groups, please visit www.streetknit.ca. And for more information about what’s happening world-wide, visit www.wwkipday.com

8. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Performance art at Propeller

Deadline date: June 14, 2010; Source: Propeller

Call for submission for an exhibition of Performance Art at the "Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts." PCVA is an artists' cooperative Gallery in existence since 1996, showcasing the work of senior and emerging artists featuring a wide range of traditional and contemporary art.

"Within This Body" DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JUNE 14 2010
Curated by Mariam Magsi and Faye Mullen

Much like naturally inclined elements, the human body is a carcass of memories, vices and virtues. Through structural processes that often push boundaries and test endurance, the human body, time and time again, transcends experiences of hurt and agony and transforms them into opportunities for new awareness and self actualization. Similar to other natural forms, the body repairs itself both internally and outwardly through restoration that may appear to test the limitations of the body, hinging on direct endurance systems that have evolved alongside human development. The human entity is known to be a great threshold for resilience, being able to revitalize the experience of pain into scars that hold substantial significance over the person's soul. It is with this constant recycling of pain and pleasure that humanity moves forward, vigorous as ever in its quest to understand human nature. An inherent part of this process is the creation of visible and/or invisible scars. Manifestations of stress on the human body can take many different shapes and forms, physical and spiritual or psychological; however, it is through the body's constant recycling of the negative into the positive, that we gain insight into the agony and the ecstasy of all that is human.

In accordance with the theme of recycled pain, The Propeller Centre For The Visual Arts invites submissions and proposals from local & international artists for an exhibition of Performance Art to be held on July.18.2010 (Sunday). Proposals should be no longer than two pages in length, with primary focus on endurance and duration. The space outside the immediate entrance of the gallery is also accessible and a floor plan is attached for familiarity with the gallery's interior. Please send all submissions to the following address no later than June.14.2010-:

984 Queen Street West
Toronto, ON M6J 1H1
(416) 504-7142

Requirements are as follows-:
-A cheque or money order for $25.00 made out to Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts with each submission
-A written proposal, no longer than 2 pages, outlining your statement, intent and a brief visual description of the piece. Kindly limit your performance to 40 minutes or less.
-Images of recent performances or online links to your work
-C.V and Biography
-Your Technical requirements*

*Please note that artists are responsible for their own travel costs and are encouraged to apply for assistance from their respective arts councils.

PCVA will be happy to send a formal letter of invitation to the selected artists; this may be used to secure the necessary assistance.

10. EXHIBITION: Catalyst Arts presents...Art Rebels
Date: closing June 12, 2010; Source: Catalyst
Catalyst Arts 1994-2010
Exhibition Dates – 21st May – 12th June

Exhibiting artists:

Allan Hughes, Angela Darby, Benji DeBurca, Brendan O'Neill, Brian Patterson, Brown&Bri, Caelan Bristow, Cherie Driver, Cian Donnelly, Clive Murphy, Colm Clarke, Dan Shipsides, Deirdre McKenna, Dougal McKenzie, Duncan Campbell, Eilis O'Baoil, Elina Medley, Eoghan McTigue, Fiona Ní Mhaoilir, Fionnuala Doran, Fuyuka Shindo, Grainne Cullen, Helen Sharp, Johanna Leech, Julie Bacon, Justin McKeown, Karen Vaughan, Leo Devlin, Mark Orange, Meabh McDonnell, Peter Richards, Phil Collins, Philip Hession, Robert Peters, Sara O'Gorman, Seamus Harahan, Stephen Hackett, Susan Phillipz & Ursula Burke.

*Performances on the opening night from Julie Bacon, Brian Patterson & Peter Richards.

In darkest February 1996, the members of Catalyst Arts were invited to fill an empty box marked Art Rebels for the annual members show. 79 boxes were returned, and exhibited anonymously. The floorboards in the gallery were lifted up and the boxes placed between the beams, to be sealed off until 2010 when they would be unearthed and reopened. Now, in 2010 they reach their final destination. The Art Rebels boxes, like Catalyst, have survived the moves, the crises, the parties and the controversies of 14 years of artist led mayhem.

Art Rebels is a celebration of the creativity and ambition of the people that have made this possible- the directors who gave up two years of their lives to Catalyst. All of the exhibiting artists have served on the committee at some point from 1994 onwards; many have gone on to success as artists and curators, even being nominated for the Turner Prize, and others have taken on significant roles in the arts infrastructure of the UK and Ireland.

Art Rebels brings many of these people back together for the first time, with performances, discussions and workshops running alongside the gallery exhibition.

Cherie Driver will be working with Catalyst's extensive archive of art projects, publications and artifacts, making it accessible to the public and becoming an integral part of the exhibition.

About FADO
Established in 1993, FADO Performance Inc. (Performance Art Centre) is a not-for-profit artist-run centre for performance art based in Toronto, Canada. FADO exists to provide a stable, ongoing, supportive forum for creating and presenting performance art. Currently, we are the only artist-run centre in English Canada devoted specifically to this form. We present the work of local, national and international artists who have chosen performance art as a primary medium to create and communicate provocative new images and new perspectives. Thanks to the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council and the Department of Canadian Heritage for their on-going support of our endeavors.
