1. EVENT: Performative Gestures - Political Moves

Date: June 19, 2010 – OVER BUT STILL IMPORTANT INFO

Symposium on women performance artists in Eastern Europe

Atrium of ZRC SAZU (Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts), Novi trg 2, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Speakers: Marina Grzinic (SI), Tímea Junghaus (HU), Suzana Milevska (MK), Barbara Orel (SI), Martina Pachmanová (CZ), Marija Mojca Pungercar (SI), Nurhan Qehaja (KV), Ana Peraica (HR), Waldemar Tatarczuk  (PL)
Performances: Marta Bosowska (PL), Teja Reba (SI) and Leja Jurisic (SI)

Video screening: Alma Suljevic (BA), PPF (SI)
Moderators: Katja Kobolt (SI/DE) and Lana Zdravkovic (RS/SI)

The living element – i.e. the body and the event actualised by means of performance arts (live art, body art, happening, performance interventions or actions) are undoubtedly experiencing, both in contemporary art as well as contemporary performing arts, a revival. The symposium Performative Gestures – Political Moves draws the attention of the City of Women - starting with the European project A Space for Live Art and with the guest exhibition and accompanying events, entitled Re.Act.Feminism (Vžigalica gallery, March 2009) – to this processual and heterogeneous art form that combines the elements of dance, music, video and visual arts, as well as new media.
The symposium highlights in particular the performance practices of Eastern European women artists addressing various notions, theoretisations and historisations of hegemonial (neo-imperial and neo-colonial) narratives of the art system that characterise both production as well as receptive frames of artists' expression within this art form.

Based on the fact that the term »Eastern Europe« itself has experienced a peculiar institutionalisation within the art system, the symposium Performative Gestures – Political Moves will provide a platform to reconsider the decolonisation strategies of the Eastern European notion and a (self)reflection of curatorial practices and the historisation of art projects in the region of Eastern Europe.

7. EVENT: Z’s by the C: a radical crafting and public napping project
Dates: Saturday July 17 – 18, 2010; Source: Theatre Centre

The Theatre Centre in partnership with Cooking Fire Theatre Festival presents
Z’s by the C: a radical crafting and public napping project
By Eric Moschopedis and Mia Rushton + You!
Saturday July 17 – Sunday July 18, 2010

Come decorate a sleeping mask before catching some Z’s in downtown Toronto!

The residents of Toronto are invited to come personalize a sleeping mask using simple crafting techniques before covering their eyes and dozing off in the city.  By creating a safe sleeping zone on the site of a proposed park in the Queen West neighbourhood, Eric Moschopedis and Mia Rushton seek to legitimize public napping under the aegis of art - just sweet public dreams!

Z’s by the C is a project in art and social engagement that playfully, but critically, aims to destabilize public and private space by performing a highly intimate act - napping in the city. Increasingly, neoliberal economic and cultural policies have led Western cities to implement social strategies that prohibit loitering and consequently limit public sleeping. Rushton and Moschopedis perceive this criminalization of everyday behaviour as not only an affront to our society’s marginalized and fatigued citizens, but also as an attack on public dreaming. As a public intervention, Z’s by the C seeks to rectify this situation, if only temporarily.

Mia Rushton is a printmaker, crafter and collector. By combining the elements of silk screening, sewing, knitting, and drawing, Rushton is among a new generation of do-it-yourself, indie artists who have embraced handcrafting as a way out and a resistance to the overly technocratic art industry. A graduate from Alberta College of Art & Design, Rushton has shown her work at Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art, Choose Yer Own Fest and in Truck Gallery’s CAMPER.

Eric Moschopedis is an award-winning interdisciplinary performer, facilitator, educator, and curator. A graduate of Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies at University of British Columbia, Moschopedis creates community-specific, relational, and participatory works that invite audiences to become active collaborators in the creation of community. He also maintains a performance practice that oscillates between staged performance, performance for video, installation, performative work, intervention, and walking, finding, and collecting.

Since 1979, The Theatre Centre has been Toronto’s home for experimental performance. Serving as an arts incubator, the centre provides emerging and established artists with the facilities, funding, mentorship, profile and sense of community to enable new work to be created, explored and developed. www.theatrecentre.org

9. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 32nd Rhubarb Festival

Deadline dates: various, see below; Source: Laura Nanni

THE 32nd RHUBARB FESTIVAL
Toronto's Annual Convergence of Contemporary Performance

Feb 16-27, 2011

Festival Director Laura Nanni

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS 2011
Produced by Buddies in Bad Times Theatre for over 30 years, the Rhubarb Festival has offered artists a critic-free environment to experiment with new explorations in performance. Rhubarb continuously reconsiders the possibilities for performance - how we create it, how we present it and how we experience it. It is an invitation for artists to take risks, investigate new directions and challenge conventions. It is an opportunity for adventurous audiences to journey off predictable paths. Rhubarb provides artists with a rare opportunity to present work to a large and enthusiastic audience. Many Rhubarb shows have gone on to be further developed and presented in Toronto, across Canada and internationally.

GENERAL CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

DEADLINE: 5PM, Tuesday August 17, 2010
Rhubarb seeks proposals for new, not previously produced performances (30 minutes or less) for the 32nd Annual Rhubarb Festival.  Submissions are encouraged from both established and emerging artists working in the areas of contemporary theatre, performance art, dance, music, interdisciplinary and hybrid forms.  Of particular interest are projects, approaches and ideas that are new territory for the artist and the medium.

Selected projects will be featured during the festival (Feb. 16-27, 2011) and will receive technical, production, administrative, promotional and artistic support. Invited companies will have the opportunity to access free rehearsal space leading up to Rhubarb. In addition to an honorarium, festival artists also receive an unlimited artist pass, allowing them to see work for free by local, national and international artists over the course of two weeks.

New to Rhubarb this year!

TWO SPECIAL PROJECT CALLS: SET IT OFF

DEADLINE: 5PM, Monday August 30, 2010
Building on the culture of club nights at Buddies, Rhubarb invites DJs and musicians who venture into new and experimental territory of music performance (especially those working in live mixing and sampling) to submit proposals. This may include DJs/ electronic artists collaborating with animators, new media artists, choreographers, etc. to create a short set. Other possibilities include musicians working with non-traditional equipment and instruments (i.e. kitchen appliances, video game consoles, found objects, bicycle powered amps, etc.). Of special interest are proposals that not only suggest experimentation with the instruments themselves, but also consider aspects of the music in relation to staging, conceptual meaning, story and/ or form.

MOBILE WORKS

DEADLINE: 5PM, Monday August 30, 2010
Taking the Rhubarb experience outside the walls of Buddies, the festival invites proposals for works that begin elsewhere and converge at Buddies (12 Alexander Street, Toronto). Performance interventions, performances on the subway, flash mobs, etc. that eventually end at Buddies are encouraged. Participatory projects and online performances that are developed in the lead up to Rhubarb and culminate in another form of presentation at Buddies are also welcome. The proposal should take into consideration not only the festival audiences but also the general public, unsuspecting and accidental audiences who may stumble upon or intersect with the work.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Only submissions delivered by or post-marked by the deadline dates will be accepted. Works submitted must be new and original. Submissions must be submitted in hard copy only and must be accompanied by the 2011 Rhubarb Festival Application Form (available online at www.buddiesinbadtimes.com) and the $20 non-refundable reading fee (payable to: Buddies in Bad Times Theatre). Fax or email submissions will not be accepted and late submissions will not be considered.

10. OPEN CALL FOR RESPONSES: Feminist Research Performance Project
Date: unspecified; Source: Pam Patterson

www.wiaprojects.com

Feminist Research Performance Project

“I know what I used to think of it as, which is looking at women in a society that is defined by a patriarchy and finding a place for women to fight against that patriarchy…” Leena Raudvee

How does one define Feminism? What is a Feminist? What does a Feminist do? How do you become a Feminist? These are just a few of the questions that we asked each other when presented with the challenge of performing Feminist culture. As self-proclaimed Feminists we have our individual narratives to answer our initial questions.

As Feminists of different generations and varied cultures we’re interested in answering these questions with specific reference to the ‘now’. Since the inception of a Feminist culture many theories have circulated, many discussions have been had, and we now feel that it is time for a re-defining and/or re-culturing of our understanding of Feminist culture as it exists today.

As performance artists, a core element in each of our practices is the act of collaboration. With this in mind, we are taking an investigative approach and putting out this open call for responses to our key question: What instructions can you give for a Feminist action?

We ask that you provide us with instructions for a Feminist action that we may choose to interpret and perform.

Please send instructions to Leena Raudvee and Erika DeFreitas at the following email address: erika.leena@gmail.com with the subject: Action.

Our documentation of performed actions will be on exhibit at XPACE Culture Centre during the WIAprojects symposium Performing Feminist Culture, held on November 6, 2010.

DEADLINE: As soon as possible!
