Simon Rabyniuk

Curated by Claudia Wittmann

213 Sterling Road, Toronto
(two streets east of Roncesvalles Avenue, south of Bloor Street West)

Two nights!
Friday January 14, 2011 at 8pm
Saturday January 15, 2011 at 8pm
$10/PWYC (you pay once only)

Jo SiMalaya Alcampo, Yumi Onose and Simon Rabyniuk perform on Friday and the next night they present a new work in response to the previous evening. This situation challenges the artists to work directly and immediately with site, a changing and repeating audience and to consider the impact and influence of working side by side over a duration of time.

"They see us. They perform in front of us. We see them perform. We see them. They feel us. They perform near us. We feel their work. We feel them. Something happens. Something goes through us. Something goes through them. They process the encounter. We process too. We eat. We sleep. We dream. We think. We all come back the next day. We see them. They see us. We see their response to the day before. We see more. Way more. We feel more. They feel more. Way more."

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Simon Rabyniuk is a Toronto-based visual artist and member of the urban design collective Department of Unusual Certainties. He creates context sensitive projects exploring urban form as both process and object. He has created site-sensitive works specific to the Parkdale Neighbourhood in Toronto, Wardsville, and Windsor.

Jo SiMalaya Alcampo is an interdisciplinary artist born in the Philippines and raised in Scarborough. Her interactive mixed media projects explore intersectionality, cultural/body memory and soul wounds. She combines various forms of artistic expression including sculpture, installation, sound art, electronics, photography, film/video and performance.

Yumi Onose was born in Japan. Yumi's passion in traveling and learning lead to her study of visual arts and performance. She has created art for contemporary dance piece Red Dream directed by Keiko Ninomiya in 2006, and exhibited Evolving Forms with Harvey Chan in 2007.

2. FADO Performance Art Centre: CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Deadline date: January 15, 2011

FADO Performance Art Centre: Call for Proposals
Emerging and Early Career Artists Series 2011

Initiated in 2002 by local artist and educator Tanya Mars, FADO's annual Emerging Artists Series offers a professional exhibition opportunity to local and regional emerging and early career artists and curators. Artists are asked to respond to a call for submissions based around a thematic context. In 2011 the Emerging Artists Series is curated by Gale Allen.

Deadline: January 15, 2011 5PM (Submissions must arrive by this date)

FADO Performance Art Centre is seeking proposals for performance proposals from emerging and early career artists for our annual Emerging Artists Series. Proposals should consider the relationship between popular aesthetics, academia, contemporary art, and common cultural norms. Throughout time popular aesthetic movements have often incorporated transgressive actions, ideas, and aesthetics that challenge academic canons and popular opinion. Examples include but are not limited to:
-intuition, séances and psychics;
-humor as aesthetic;
-danger fun;
-webcams, youtube and vimeo;
-representation as revolt;
-gender history, gender bending, stereotypes in early striptease;
-drag aesthetics and the representation of the other;
-the role of privilege in transgression;
-amateur aesthetics incorporated into prime time television shows;
-the representation of abjection and stereotypes as entertainment on popular television.

Framework:
FADO invites submissions for performance works from emerging or early career artists. The event and exhibition will take place in Toronto between March 8 –13, 2011, and will be accompanied by the publication of an exhibition booklette. Artist fees will be paid. We encourage a variety of performance formats including short works and durational or multi-day projects.

Proposals should include:
-Statement of artistic practice;
-Description of proposed performance (include duration/materials/ tech needs);
-Visual support materials such as images/video of past work;
-Detailed description of support materials;
-CV and short bio.

Submission can be mailed to:
FADO Performance Art Centre
445-401 Richmond Street West

Márcio Carvalho: Re-visiting Kortrijk

In October 2010 Márcio Carvalho developed the second version of his project Appointment, this time meeting with Kortrijk, a city in Belgium, in the framework of a residency at KunstCentrum Buda.

Appointment with Kortrijk built a map of relations between the artist and the city surroundings of Kortrijk, using its spaces, population, objects and quotidians. The relations were recorded in the formats of video, photography, text and sound. Seven videos, a live performance and writings about the experiences within the city landscapes were produced.

Now, after 2 months, Re-visiting Kortrijk, examines the appointments made during the residency. In a live documentation of memories, the artist aims to create a relation between the life he lived in Kortrijk and the memories of it. A documentation will be made during the live presentation. It is a vital part of the performance narrative and essential for the understanding of it. Working about past and present memory, the artist aims to open a discussion about the act of documentation as a tool to extend, physically and conceptually, the performance in time.

The concept of Appointment was originally developed in a collaboration between the Chinese artist Yingmei Duan and Márcio Carvalho in June 2010.

Márcio Carvalho works as an artist, researcher and curator in the fields of performance art, video and photography. Since 2009 he is the founder and curator of the artist residence program Hotel25 in Berlin and the organizer and curator of the Performance festival PLOT IN SITU in Berlin. Márcio’s work is based on physical and theoretical research of concepts such as memory and mechanical, cultural, social and political structures. In a final stage of his works, poetry and metaphor are the forms that he uses to build his actions and performances. The artist‘s work relies on its ability to cross disciplines. He believes that video, photography, painting, sculpture and theater play many different roles in his performances. “The art fields are tools to be used in performance actions and to be forgotten as individual disciplines”.

6. EVENT: Extension Series 7 (Berlin)
Dates: January 10-16 (various); Source: Andrés Galeano

GRIMMUSEUM, Fichte Str. 2 Berlin, presents: EXTENSION SERIES 7
Curated by Andrés Galeano

SYLVIA RIMAT (DE/UK)
NINA BOAS (NL)

Residence: January 10-16
Performances: January 13 at 19h
Performances documentation: January 14 -16
Lecture: January 16 at 18h: On Performance Art Documentation by Christopher Hewitt and Andrés Galeano.

The seventh Series of Extension presents two young artists, the German Sylvia Rimat and the Dutch Nina Boas, whose pieces of work play humorously with theatrical illusions and the use of fine narrative mechanisms of interaction with the audience.

Despite of these similarities, both artists present different performance styles and subjects approaches. Sylvia uses mostly speech and written text in order to evoke imagined actions, situations, objects and spaces, questioning the theatrical conventions of being on a stage. Nina creates a parallel wonderland full of surprises and naïf representations of the daily life, using live drawings and video projections.
