FADO Performance Art Centre: Call for Proposals

Emerging and Early Career Artists Series 2011

 

Initiated in 2002 by local artist and educator Tanya Mars, FADO's annual Emerging Artists Series offers a professional exhibition opportunity to local and regional emerging and early career artists and curators. Artists are asked to respond to a call for submissions based around a thematic context. In 2011 the Emerging Artists Series is curated by Gale Allen.

FADO Performance Art Centre is seeking proposals for performance proposals from emerging and early career artists for our annual Emerging Artists Series. Proposals should consider the relationship between popular aesthetics, academia, contemporary art, and common cultural norms. Throughout time popular aesthetic movements have often incorporated transgressive actions, ideas, and aesthetics that challenge academic canons and popular opinion. Examples include but are not limited to: 

-intuition, séances and psychics;

-humor as aesthetic;

-danger fun;

-webcams, youtube and vimeo;

-representation as revolt;

-gender history, gender bending, stereotypes in early striptease;

-drag aesthetics and the representation of the other; 

-the role of privilege in transgression;

-amateur aesthetics incorporated into prime time television shows;

-the representation of abjection and stereotypes as entertainment on popular television.

 

Framework: 

FADO invites submissions for performance works from emerging or early career artists. The event and exhibition will take place in Toronto between March 8 –13, 2011, and will be accompanied by the publication of an exhibition booklette. Artist fees will be paid. We encourage a variety of performance formats including short works and durational or multi-day projects.

 

Proposals should include:

-Statement of artistic practice;

-Description of proposed performance (include duration/materials/ tech needs);

-Visual support materials such as images/video of past work;

-Detailed description of support materials; 

-CV and short bio.

Beyond Pressure is the leading international art festival in Myanmar. It is also a platform for the Asian emerging artists to share and exchange experiences and aspects. This year, 2010 Beyond Pressure would like to celebrate the third year anniversary with new initiation, evolvement and extension of public space into a new era. We would like to extend our performance art scene in a new audience in Kan daw Gyi Garden.

 

Last year, the festival was able to endorse the official permission to make it in a public space and could attract public interest. We would like to strengthen the public awareness and liberation of the art space. The art festival will be held from 2nd December to 5th December.

Alice De Visscher explores the physical properties of an object, her body, space and the relationships they share. Equally, she works with her perceptions of her body and space. By using strange associations she seeks to provoque the imaginary, so that the public can associate personal images or ideas to the actions they witness.

 

Alice De Visscher lives and works in Bruselles. Graduate of a theather school in 2004, (De Kleine Academie), she quit the narrative to explore the physical and visual relationships between her body, objects and/or space through video and performance. She has presented her work in Belgium for a number of years and is now beginning this year to present her work internationally (Germany, Austria, Singapore, Thaïlande). The artist thanks Wallonie-Bruxelles international for their support.

Facilitated by artists Siya Chen and Jessica Cimó and hosted by ex-mayoral candidate Keith Cole, Festival of Festivals (of Toronto) will call into question the role of arts and culture workers in festivals in consideration of the culture scene dubbed "economic stimulus" by ex-mayor David Miller, in which we feel many arts and culture workers can be caught between hype and mediocrity.

 

The performance of our festival will turn a critical mirror onto the cultural scene of Toronto in order to actively debate through a display the hyperbole of experience disseminated by an extremely large number of festivals in Toronto, many of which are relatively unknown and possibly dismally attended.

 

All festivals of Toronto during 2010 will be included and each will receive 15 seconds of fame-- Andy Warhol style.  Keith Cole will moderate and incite audience participation in a game show like live performance where a performative audience will be invited to place each festival on a map of the city of Toronto in 15 seconds in competition against the performance of a single performer/player.

 

The questions are the passing questions many of us experience daily;  Do we really need so many festivals?  Are all needs being served despite overwhelming festival numbers?

What does it mean to have so many festivals? Can we consolidate and refine?  Are most festivals choices between the same unhealthy binging or cheap thrills?  

 

The piece will not directly answer these questions, as it is an open ending.  What is important is civic engagement and support to festivals that are important for the city's cultural awareness and ones that bring true value to the stage.

 

**Social Performance Art piece, Festival of Festivals (of Toronto) will be a live, interactive, relational performance art piece that doubly serves as an installation and late-night festive party. **

6. EVENT: ZAZ Festival 2010

The ZAZ Festival for performance art is a unique initiative in Israel. As a dynamic and experimental laboratory of live art, the festival moves between different physical and social spaces in Israel, and between various forms of action, including frontal performances in a variety of heterogeneous spaces; simultaneous performances in multiple sites; actions on the streets and in public buildings that have a charged socio-political meaning; As well there will be workshops for students and the general public. About 15 Israeli artists and 10 artists from India, Myanmar, Japan, The Philippines, Switzerland and Spain will participate in the festival.

 

The first part of this year’s ZAZ Festival will be located in Tel Aviv. From December 16th-18th a variety of performances, workshops and artist talks will take place at Performance Art Platform and public areas in and around the New Central Bus Station. From December 23rd-25th the festival will be located in different locations in Haifa. The artists will perform at MadaTech (The Israeli Museum of Science), in the community hall of Haifa and in the Streets of Wadi Nisnas.

Celebrate a decade of ANTI - Contemporary Art Festival: 27th of September to 2nd of October 2011, Kuopio, Finland. Ten years of ANTI: it’s time to REMAKE, REBUILD, RENEW! This is an open call to artists to propose a site-specific project for the 2011 ANTI Festival.

 

We ask you to respond to the following theme: REMAKE, REBUILD, RENEW

 

With economic, ecological and social change underway across the world, due impart to the financial crisis, we are challenged by the impact this process my have on our daily lives. Of course there has perhaps not been a time when this has not been the case but today that process could be seen to be accelerating.  Governments and councils are involved in a dramatic remaking of financial and political structures – something soon to be felt in Kuopio. Around us environments are rapidly changing, be that by the rebuilding of urban environments (Kuopio’s market square is a case in point) or by our use of the world’s natural resources. In response we are asked to change, to re-imagine our everyday lives. Whether our response is positive, negative or neither it is a process that might well define our age.

 

For ten years ANTI has re-imagined the public and private spaces of Kuopio. Festival projects have reconfigured the everyday places of the city, asking us to rethink them, re-imagine and re-approach our relationship to the world around us. It’s that process that we’ll concentrate on for this 10th edition of the festival. 

 

Possible points of departure for your project might be:

-How do you rebuild and remake in your creative practice? 

-What does it mean to re-imagine a previously made project? 

-What does it mean to revisit and re-imagine a known space? 

-How is change celebrated? 

-How is changed resisted? 

-How does the city effectively renew itself and what role might creative activity play in this?

 

All projects at ANTI are shown in the public space, and all have an integral relationship to space in which they occur. All forms of work are welcome. ANTI is an international contemporary arts festival presenting site-specific works made for public space. Over the past decade ANTI has presented live, sonic, visual and text-based art from today’s most exciting and innovative artists. A truly international festival and Finland’s foremost presenter of Live Art, ANTI is a meeting place for artists and audiences fascinated by how art shapes and responds to the places and spaces of everyday life.

 

ANTI’s emphasis is on site-specificity. The festival understands this term in an expanded sense; proposals may suggest works that deal with a site geographically, culturally or by association etc. The proposal form asks artists to state their preferred site for their project. Please think carefully about where and how a project will be sited. The festival will undertake all negotiations to allow projects to use public/private space. Please remember that ANTI does not programme works for gallery or theatre spaces.

 

As ANTI festival takes place in public space it is essential proposals consider a site’s pre-existing ‘audience’; be they passers-by, customers or residents. Alongside those who purposely visit the festival, a substantial part of ANTI’s audience are members of the public who come across the works by chance.

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past few years, we have noticed a gap in training for performing arts professionals. There are many masters programs and other professional training programs for visual arts curators, but we could find nothing comparable in the performing arts fields. In talking to colleagues, we realized that there was a real need for a program that addressed the ways in which performance is curated and produced today.

 

In 2010, in partnership with Danspace Project in New York, we founded the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance (ICPP) at Wesleyan University in Middletown,  CT. The ICPP is now accepting applications for a low-residency professional certificate program in 2011-2012.

 

The nine-month certificate program is designed for emerging and mid-career professionals—artists, presenters, managers and other arts professionals—who are interested in curating performance. Faculty from Wesleyan will be joined by nationally recognized curators including Philip Bither (Walker Art Center), Judy-Hussie Taylor (Danspace Project) and Doryun Chong (MoMA).

Wesleyan University’s Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance (ICPP) Professional Certificate Program

 

The ICPP brings artists, presenters, managers, and other performing arts professionals together to develop a responsive curatorial practice that takes the best from the fields of visual arts and performance.

 

Starting in summer 2011, the ICPP will offer a professional certificate program in Curatorial Practice in Performance at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Students will study artistic and curatorial practice, social and cultural context, and entrepreneurial strategies and complete an independent project in consultation with an advisor. Through a close examination of the practical and theoretical concerns of performance work, graduates of the ICPP certificate program will:

-deepen their knowledge and skill base

-enhance their professional relationships

-become better advocates for performance in the marketplace

 

Instructors include ICPP Director Samuel A. Miller, Wesleyan professors Katja Kolcio and Claudia Tatinge Nacimento, and field professionals Doryun Chong of MoMA, Philip Bither of the Walker Art Center, and Judy Hussie-Taylor of Danspace Project. The certificate is a low-residency, nine-month program. Students will complete work online in between on-campus intensives at Wesleyan University. Dates for the 2011-12 on-campus intensives are: July 9-24, 2011, November 18-20, 2011, and March 3-5, 2012.

Artivist Performance

 

Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics at New York University is now accepting applications for its fourth year of EMERGENYC, the Hemispheric New York Emerging Performers Program focused on “artivist” (artist/activist) performance. EMERGENYC aims to support the development of “hemispheric” artists ages 18 to 28 through a program of workshops and events between April 16 and June 24, 2010 (see “The Program” section below for details). We seek talented, committed and highly motivated young performers/activists/artists whose work functions as a vehicle for political expression and social change, and who examine the broad range of identities, practices and histories of the Americas (the western hemisphere, thus “hemispheric”) through genres such as spoken word, street performance, political cabaret, performance art, video performance, movement, and others.

 

Why Hemispheric New York?New York City is a space of transformation in which expressive practices from throughout the Americas come into contact and combine into new artistic forms. The constant encounters and collisions of African-, Native-, Asian-, Latino- and European- American cultures that define the City, combined with the multiple political and counter-cultural movements that have flourished on its streets, are a key source of the artistic and activist innovation that has long characterized New York City. Experimental performance, hip-hop and salsa are powerful examples of the hemispheric fusions that the City’s neighborhoods have incubated. Anti-consumerism activism like Reverend Billy’s Church of Life After  Shopping, artistic interventions such as the Guerilla Girls and Fulana’s If You Fear Something, You’ll See Something poster campaign are examples of the innovative conjunction of art and political protest. Drawing on this vitality, the program will enable young activists/performers to work with leading practitioners in the field, to take interdisciplinary leaps, and to develop their own strategies to use performance for social change.

 

The Program

Between April and June, the selected participants will take part in weekly workshops led by George Emilio Sánchez as well as by invited artists such as UNIVERSES, Reverend Billy and Savitri D, Fulana, Susana Cook, Pamela Sneed, Peggy Shaw (Split Britches), Tim Miller, Deb Levine (ACT UP), Aisha Jordan and Frantz Jerome (New World Theatre's 2050 Legacy), and others. This year will also include a teach-in on Performance (“PerforWHAT?”) led by Hemispheric Institute Founding Director and NYU University Professor Diana Taylor. (We are in conversations with Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Patricia Hoffbauer, Anna Deavere Smith, and Karen Finley for possible workshops or artist talks—check emergenyc.org for updates). We ask applicants to define social issues that are important to them and to find a bridge to communities around those issues. Past participants have explored themes of racism, racial stereotypes, and racial violence; LGBTQ rights; war and human rights; gender and sexuality; religion; and gentrification, among others. They have created performance pieces around these issues, interviewed members of various communities, and led workshops in community programs (such as GLOBE/Make the Road New York), etc.

 

The program will be divided into three phases. Phase 1: every Saturday 10am-2pm from April 16th to May 21st, participants work closely with George Emilio Sánchez in developing performance and activist strategies, such as Boalian techniques, performance art and site-specific interventions. Phase 2: intensive daily sessions (10am-5pm) from May 28th- June 5th, participants work closely with leading activists, artists and scholars, and explore specific tactics for work in the field (street performance, interviewing, videotaping, seeing other people’s work, etc.). Phase 3: Saturdays June 11th June 25th participants refine their work for a final presentation, building on the strategies explored through the workshops. Final event (evening of June 27th): participants will share their strategies, performances, and experiences in a public forum.

This program has a fee of $1000. Some financial aid will be available on a need basis, so don’t let money concerns stop you from applying. If your enrollment depends on financial aid, please let us know in your application.

 

Who Is Eligible

EMERGENYC is now open to activists/artists/performers between the ages of 18 to 28 who live in (or can easily commute to) New York City. Applicants must have prior experience in activism and/or various performance genres. The program welcomes applications from individuals enrolled in the City’s colleges and universities AND from those who are not currently pursuing formal higher education.

Master of Arts Degree Programme in Live Art and Performance Studies (LAPS) for 2009-2011 and 2011-2013

The language of instruction in the MA programme is English.

 

The MA Degree Programme in Live Art and Performance Studies is a meeting point for graduate students from different fields of art. It is intended for students of art with some experience of Live Art and performance art, who are interested in performance studies and want to develop their research skills alongside with their artistic practice. 

 

The goal of the programme is to produce artists who are aware of tradition and look to the future, who are capable fo creating new kinds of Live Art and performance art in the field of contemporary arts, and who will participate in the discourse generated by the international field of performance studies. The aim is to develop an interesting and productive relationship between theory and practice, and to combine critical thinking and open-minded experimentation in artistic work as well as practice based research.

 

The international Advisory Board of the MA Programme includes the following artists and scholars: PhD Ray Langebach, Dr. Heike Roms, Dr. Helge Meyer, Producer Christopher Hewitt, Performance Artist Roi Vaara, Performance Artist Irma Luhta

ABOUT FADO

Established in 1993, FADO Performance Inc. (Performance Art Centre) is a not-for-profit artist-run centre for performance art based in Toronto, Canada. FADO exists to provide a stable, ongoing, supportive forum for creating and presenting performance art. Currently, we are the only artist-run centre in English Canada devoted specifically to this form. We present the work of local, national and international artists who have chosen performance art as a primary medium to create and communicate provocative new images and new perspectives.
