Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies Department of Creative Studies Instructor, Interdisciplinary Performance (Term Appointment)
The Department of Creative Studies at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan Campus invites applications for a 10-month term appointment to teach undergraduate courses within the Bachelor of Fine Arts programme in Interdisciplinary Performance. This position will begin September 1, 2012 and end June 30, 2013.
The ideal candidate will be a practicing artist with a completed MFA in Physical Theatre, Dance/Theatre and/or other related studio performance training and will have relevant university teaching experience. We will consider applications from experienced professional performance practitioners who do not possess a terminal university degree. The position will include responsibility for teaching 6 courses (5 in the winter and 1 in the summer):

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake some administrative responsibilities as determined by the Department Head. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The Interdisciplinary Performance (INTP) program at UBC’s Okanagan campus is housed in the vibrant Department of Creative Studies that forms one half of the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies. The INTP program focuses on performance creation (devising) and requires students to complete core courses in three disciplines: Creative Writing, Visual Arts and Theatre. The dynamic combination of studio and workshop training in these disciplines combined with courses in Art History and contemporary art and cultural theory in the Department of Critical Studies provides undergraduate students with a broad understanding of artistic practice. The Faculty offers both discipline-based and interdisciplinary programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, including programs in Art History and Visual Culture, Creative Writing, Cultural Studies, English, French, Interdisciplinary Performance, Spanish and Visual Arts, along with courses in Japanese, German, and Ancient Languages.

Aline Benecke (“picture this…Orientalism at its best”) makes up her Oriental roman-fleuve. Andrés Galeano (“Cue&Review”) draws inspiration from songbirds. Costas Kekis and Eve Chariatte (“Ultra XYX”) wear queer costumes on a delicate set, while Hendrik Quast and Maika Knoblich (Trauer tragen) wear mourning. Markus Keim and Beate Hecker go on "Terrain Vague" looking for the gaps in human perception and Irene Accardo, IVONA Sijakovic bring the past into the present in "2111 - a time capsule", to obliterate it there permanently. Peter Mills and Julia Hannukainen finally get a DVD with an enigmatic note saying "No choice, don't of watch this".

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Ben Puah Ben Puah is a new breed of contemporary Asian artists who's made a huge impact with his energy and vision. A self-confessed mentally "乱七八糟" artist of ‘crazy artworks’, Ben creates shocking and powerful works that refuse to fit into the mainstream.
Art is very important to Ben because it is a way of expressing oneself and an abstraction of how he feel about life. His works are like in the state of phantasmagoria where there is a mix of real and imagined elements. At the psychological level, he seemed to suffer from paranoid personality disorder and have a negative view about the world, and is quietly frantic at the same time. This resulted in the penetration of unsettled emotions where his art seems temperamental with an erratic behavior that tells the honest truth to his audience.
Ben has exhibited his works in Singapore, Australia, Germany, Japan, USA, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil, London, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi and China. His artwork is in the public and private collections in numerous local and international locations. Ben has also conducted workshops in many schools and art institutions.
Visual and performance independent artist. 1983 started art education at the ceramics school of Manises, after he moves to San Francisco and attended SFAI around a year, never officially inscribed, he backs to Spain, and he finished Fine Arts university in Valencia, and later on he graduates at The Gerrit Rietveld Academie of Amsterdam at 2001. He has been made around 90 offcially colectives events (mostly performance) 6 solo shows under Carlos Llavata´s name.

Li Cassidy-Peet is an artist from London now resident in Singapore since 2005.
Born in West Germany, of dual parentage Russian and Montenegrin. She studied Fine Art at Goldsmith's College, University of London and Theater Studies at NW5 Theater School, London. Cassidy-Peet works in mixed media from performance, installation, sculpture, drawing and slide shows with the use of ready mades, commonly available and industrial materials. Her interest in human behavior/ mind space, can be seen through out all her work practice. In her performances "uncomfortable states of mind" are explored from the biographical to contemporary life. She has shown in London, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bandung. http://licassidypeet.com
Born in Spain 1978, Mariona holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona, where she also teaches art currently writing her doctoral thesis, the issue is on the way of pictorial experience and contemplative experience, lead to the same experience, toward unity. She has performed solo and group exhibitions in Europe, South America and also in Singapore last year, during their residence invited by Jason Wee Grey Projects
R.I.T.E.S. is an artists-initiative organised as a non-profit event to platform new ideas and artists in sonic art, time-based and performance art-related practices. Its objectives are to present an eclectic mix of performances that is informed by visual aesthetics, technological integration and conceptual integrity involving art making and the social and cultural contexts that are related to performances. It explores art activities that are spatial, the way in which performance is linked to cultural, ethnic and geographical elements of the body, and at the same time exploring how all these elements can be bounded to the global, technological, cultural and economic shifts in our daily life.

This 5-day intensive workshop is geared to artists who are interested in an exploration of performance art and the creative process, regardless of participants’ usual discipline. Participants will use the body, objects and sites as malleable material that they will construct, expand, invert, reinvent and rediscover within performance actions. The workshop will confront the performative gesture from several angles: within the unfolding moment, as a context specific relationship, and as a sensorial image. Notions of presence and invisibility will be explored through live and camera-based actions. Hands-on exercises, thematic discussions, and individual coaching will support the creation of these live works within the setting of Toronto Island. Each day of the workshop will explore different themes that will build upon each other towards a public presentation of participant's work at the workshop's conclusion, Saturday August 4th.
Montreal multi-disciplinary artist Rachel Echenberg has been making performance-based work for twenty years. She is continually interested in possibilities for active empathy and how distance and proximity affect exchange with audience and surroundings within the performative act. Her work has been performed, screened and exhibited since 1992 across Canada as well as internationally in Chile, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Morocco, Northern Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland and the United States.
GENERAL INFORMATION As there are no bedrooms available at Artscape Gibraltar Point for this time period and the facilities at the residency will be restricted to those staying on the Island, participants should bring their own food to the Island each day. Using a bicycle to get on and off the Island is also highly recommended.

Platform Young Performance Artists Some of the participants of the workshops will be invited to participate in the Platform. Here they can show their performances to a broader audience. Of course – all of the participants should stay if possible! It will be an excellent possibility to meet and exchange with audience and other young artists from Istanbul and the region.
Conference Hatice Utkan, Art Journalist, Press Coordinator and Event Organizer of IPA Istanbul will organize this year’s conference about “Teaching Performance Art” which will take place during the Platform.
IPA (International Performance Association) - Istanbul Festival as newcomer highlight of Turkey’s art scene aims to be a platform for encouraging performing arts practices with uniting performance lovers as well as emerging artists from all over the world to exchange their ideas and experiences. This year IPA Festival will be held by Istanbul based teamalso carries two local project partners; maumau art residency and Koza Visual Culture and Arts Association with treasured contributions of venue partners; Salt Galata, Pasajist, Gallery NON and DEPO. Background Information IPAH is an organization of artist and students of performing arts that aims at bringing together performance artists from all over the world in order to encourage the exchange with and learning from each other. Like the years before, we cooperate in the organization of a Performance Summer Camp, where young performance artists can meet and work together for one week with internationally known artists from whose knowledge and experience they can learn in workshops and discussions.
In 2012 IPAH was divided in IPAH e.V. (International Performance Association Hildesheim) still based in Hildesheim and IPA (International Performance Association), again initiated by Jürgen Fritz and now based in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. IPA (Frankfurt) will organize in Future the IPA Summercamp and the ZOOM! Festival.
The IPA Performance Summer provides a platform for young performance artists and students of performance art. No matter whether you are already advanced within your performance practice or you are just taking your first steps in live art - the camp will offer you a unique opportunity: further develop your individual artistic work in workshops with experienced performance artist and exchange and discuss your ideas with other young emerging artists.

About 210 participants from 27 countries all over the world have taken part so far.
We try to offer the camp as cheap as possible, because we want to make it possible for everybody to take part. (In 2011 we charged 200, - € for workshop fee, accommodation and food during the workshop).
We can also help if the participants need official invitations to apply for travel support.
Platform Young Performance Artists was initiated in 2010 as a collaboration of Performer Stammtisch (www.performerstammtisch.de) and IPAH e.V. (www.i-pah.de), in cooperation with Flutgraben e.V. (www.flutgraben.org) both from Berlin/Germany. Its major interest lies in giving young performance artists as well as interested people the opportunity to get to know the variety of approaches in performance art, to explore their own artistic practice and language, and to get into exchange with other young and professional, well-known performance artists across the world. In 2010 and 2011, Platform Young Performance Artists took place in Berlin and was co-organized and hosted by Flutgraben e.V.

We are happy to announce the cooperation with the performance art photographer and teacher of photography at the Art Academy Karlsruhe Pietro Pellini (DE) (http://art.pietropellini.com/), the art historian and teacher Dr. Irene Müller (CH) and Dr. Karmenlara Ely (USA) Associate Professor and Artistic Director of the acting department at the Norwegian Theatre Academy in Fredrikstad, Norway. They will introduce their work and take part as visiting lecturers in PAS #27.
Concept "I began to pull my dress all the way up so my toes were showing. Then I took the jar… [and]… there was a bird inside (alive).”
What remains is the memory of presence. A memory leaves an imprint in or on our mind and body. It becomes an identification and recall of objects, places and exchange of individual or collective stories. Imprints are traces and visualizations, written by experiences in our lives. What remains is unique and not repeatable.
We think and feel in pictures, in remembrance and imagination. But we quickly reach a border if we try to grasp just one single moment in every aspect, full size. A specific smell, a tiny sound, an unexpected movement or a spatial feeling, everything what creates our perception is hardly to shape in an image.
Within the use of Photography in Performance Art, both Medias are able to interact directly with the audience and can change the perception of perspectives, motions and emotional states. Both Medias uses different strategies, but in the ideal case, they are both close to grasp the essence of this blank space – the essence of a moment.
PAS#27 After Image is searching within the intersection between Photography as one aspect of documentation and Performance Art as an ephemeral art practice. With this discourse we want to take part in the running discussions about documentation, preserving and archiving the relics of Performance Art pieces. The aim of this 12 days study is to work out a performance, to present this as part of the final presentation in the Grimmuseum and reflect on how we document this art pieces.

Approach is an exhibition exploring situations of separateness and/or the search for harmony as a theme in performance art. Works proposed and submitted to this show will focus on engagement with self, the audience and/or the surrounding environment and will exist within the genre of performance art, or video or photographic documentation of performative actions/works. Proposals and entries for this show can include photographic and/or video documentation of previous interventions and/or on-site performance works with or without an installation art component.
Artists interested in submitting work for consideration are encouraged to send images of previous works as well as proposals for new on-site works. Performance actions involving installations or public interventions in Lexington and/or in the gallery spaces are encouraged.
Eligibility and Media
All artists, age 18 and older, are eligible to enter. All media and styles will be considered as long as performative actions are included. Documentation of performance work may be in photography and/or video. All works must have been completed since 2007 and not previously shown in any LAL gallery or program.

FADO exists to provide a stable, ongoing, supportive forum for creating and presenting performance art. Currently, we are the only artist-run centre in English Canada devoted specifically to this form. We present the work of local, national and international artists who have chosen performance art as a primary medium to create and communicate provocative new images and new perspectives. Thanks to the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council and the Department of Canadian Heritage for their on-going support of our endeavors.
