Two nearly identical tall blonde women, wearing white folklore blouses, grey leather short and white moon boots strapped into traditional wooden snowshoes manipulate large red exercise balls, enacting a traditional invocation rite by utilizing non-traditional gesture, action and costume. In this 5-hour performance movement, TallBlondLadies repeat a ritualized synchronized dance using modern day props, in time to the sound of snowshoes.

"TBL inverts female stereotypes through the composition of absurd and unexpected performative gestures, often incorporating a range of accoutrement from high-end fashion to sports gear. Their works present diametrically opposed concepts; beauty and grace are juxtaposed and diminished through brute action and athleticism, tacitly disrupting and challenging gender-based categorizations." Artists Space, New York, 2007

Established in 2003, TallBlondLadies is a collaborative performance project between Anna Berndtson (Sweden) and Irina Runge (Germany).

FADO is pleased to present TallBlondLadies in association with Hysteria Festival at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. TallBlondLadies will also perform at Hysteria on Saturday October 24 at 9pm. For details about this performance and the festival go to:

We are bombarded daily with reports and conjecture about the reality of the current worldwide economic situation: we are in recession. Businesses are failing and offering discount prices on everything in the store; the stock market is in a downward spinal; businesses are looking for bailouts from the government and their agencies are offering stimulations packages. In times like these, most of Main Street has little to celebrate, and government has a real problem on their hands.

But some businesses, despite these tough economic times, experience a boom period. Alcohol sales are up; Hollywood movies are experiencing a surge in attendance; and local symphonies, ballets, and operas are reporting a rise in audience numbers. It is believed that this growth is due to individuals needing to escape from their problems and troubles. They want to forget about reality. During tough economic times, art relating to escapism prospers.

The artists in this series have created recession era / proof / minded performances and performative projects that respond to the age-old question, “How do you escape?” during tough times. The works in this series fall into 3 categories: Black Friday, Red Tag Saturday, and Grey Cup Sunday, and respond to the current global economic situation with humour, offerings on how to deal with fear, a dash of entrepreneurial spirit, and the pure yet fleeting quest for pleasure amongst the capitalist ruins.

Schedule of events coming soon.

About FADO
Established in 1993, FADO Performance Inc. (Performance Art Centre) is a not-for-profit artist-run centre for performance art based in Toronto, Canada. FADO exists to provide a stable, ongoing, supportive forum for creating and presenting performance art. Currently, we are the only artist-run centre in English Canada devoted specifically to this form. We present the work of local, national and international artists who have chosen performance art as a primary medium to create and communicate provocative new images and new perspectives. Thanks to the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council and the Department of Canadian Heritage for their on-going support of our endeavors.
