Deadline sign up date: January 3, 2014; City: Toronto, Canada; Source: Dawn Carleton

SOLO DANCING

10 weeks - $500* (3 participants per class)
Saturdays January 11 – March 15, 2014, 3-5 p.m.
IGAC Studio @ Artscape YoungPlace, 180 Shaw St. Suite 103

In this masterclass-format intensive we use the pared-down structure of unaccompanied solo improvisation to discover what each participant is doing when they improvise, clarify what they would like to be doing, and practice staying connected to their intention, or score, in performance. Beginning with one-minute improvisations, students will be led in a focused process involving dancing, reflecting, observing and more dancing as they build toward 10-minute improvisations in the final class. Additional exercises will be introduced to elucidate specific concerns and interests as they arise. Each class will begin with 30 minutes of silent self-directed warm-up/practice. An optional informal showing of work will take place at the end of the session.

This class is designed for dancers interested in moving beyond habitual blocks and limitations, developing presence, skill and impact in improvised performance and establishing their own body of improvisation-based work. Practitioners in related fields seeking advanced study are also welcome.

$100 non-refundable deposit due upon registration; remainder of fees must be received by Friday, January 3, 2014.

GROUP PRACTICE
$20/single session; $200/11 sessions registered*
Fridays 9 – 12 noon from December 6 (sessions continue through the holiday season)
Intergalactic Arts Collective Studio, 180 Shaw St. Suite 103 (Artscape YoungPlace)

Group Practice is a space for discovering, developing, cultivating, honouring, exploring, understanding, sustaining, sharing and practicing practice. Although my thinking for these sessions is rooted in post-modern improvisational dance, practitioners from all fields are welcome.

Sessions begin with silent self-directed practice from 9:00 to 10:45, followed by a 15-minute break/transition. In the final hour I will facilitate a discussion beginning with the simple invitation for participants to share any aspect of their practice. Depending on how our discussion develops and the interests of participants, this could evolve into a facilitated embodied exploration/viewing of some of the ideas that emerge.

Please trust that your current practice is “enough” to participate in these sessions. The emphasis here is not on having impressive work to share but rather the reverse – through sharing, to remember the richness of engaging in practice. Do not worry about “filling” the entire practice time. You may take as many breaks as you want or need and do what you wish during this time as long as you remain respectful of the focus of our workspace.

Please let me know if you plan on attending. Although no pre-payment is required for drop-in participation, these sessions will be limited to 10 participants and priority will be given to those who are registered or who have reserved a spot.

For more information and to register, please contact Dawne Carleton at dawnecarleton@yahoo.com or 416-530-2960.

Dawne Carleton’s work as a dance artist, instructor and creative process facilitator is rooted in an improvisation practice that spans over 20 years. She received a Canada Council grant for Masters-level studies at the European Dance Development Center in the Netherlands. She is a choreographer who “enhance[s] our understanding of who and what we are as embodied creatures” (The Dance Current). She brings a deep sense of listening to one-on-one creative process facilitation work with artists from diverse fields.

4. WORKSHOP: Performance Art Workshop with Victoria Stanton

PERFORMANCE ART WORKSHOP:
Between Intimacy and Architecture: subtle and relational performance in public place
(The Winter Wonderland Version!)

Program Dates: February 10-15, 2014
Application Deadline: January 13, 2014
Price:  $600 + HST (this includes private accommodation and shared studio for the duration of the workshop)

DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP
How do we listen to each other? How do we interact? How do we respond to the landscape and environments (indoors and out) around us? How do we engage with time and space? Cultivating attentive awareness, empathetic presence and peripheral vision, this workshop will explore the multiple and very personalized ways in which we experience and foster intimacy and connection – in ourselves, towards others, and in relation to place. We will explore how time and space are intimately connected and linked to how we develop a relationship to the space and people around us; how repetition of an action (over time) within a particular space necessarily creates familiarity with that space, within the various contexts in which we find ourselves to be. We will also explore how the ways in which a "non-productive" use of time, as carried out in public (place) activates a space. Finally, we will attempt to create contexts to explore ways of experiencing various kinds of “in-betweens,” (the spaces between thought and action, between actions, between each other, between ourselves and the spaces around us.)

Key ideas:
-Activating space
-Holding space
-Connecting to space
-Connecting to others

The importance in relational/public practices to be able to also activate:
-Empathetic / compassionate presence (1. towards yourself, 2. towards others)
-Non-judgment
-Attentive awareness/ full observation
-Groundedness (what is your container)
-Faith, Trust

PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY
Whether working in participatory, durational, task-based or audio-visual performance, the constant thread in my work is an investigation into the ability (and the desire) to hold a space, to appropriate and disrupt the quotidian, to create spontaneous intimacy, to tread vulnerability. Investing a performative presence and consciousness within multiple spaces/times, I continuously underscore the complex aspects of “transaction” and the possibility for transformation.

Much recent work explores the elusive “in-between” – that invisible, liminal space between myself and the audience (whether a group or just one person) or between myself and my object/action/location – whether appearing “on stage” (in a black box, white cube, bar or loft) or “out in the world” (in public sites and “non-art” contexts). The “in-between” is my inquiry into transitional space: as manifested on stage (has the performance ended?), as presented through relational exchange (is this a performance? Is this Art?), and as experienced out in the world through geopoetic meandering, and the conscious inhabiting of non-places found in the built environment.  These subtle forms of testing the limits of vulnerability make up an overall practice (and multiple research processes) as an artist working in – and with – space and time.

ABOUT Victoria Stanton
Victoria Stanton is an interdisciplinary artist working with live action, human interaction, video, film, photo, drawing, and writing. Continually exploring within such diverse media, while the outward results of her practice manifest in a multiplicity of forms, performance is the unifying central focus and invariable core of her research. Her time-based work includes performance for stage, performance for the camera, actions in public spaces, and one-on-one encounters in intimate contexts.

Stanton has presented exhibitions, performances, interventions, and films/videos in Canada, the U.S., Europe, the U.K., Australia, Japan and Mexico. Her creative and critical writings have been published in Canadian and American anthologies and art/literary/lifestyle magazines. She is the co-author with Vincent Tinguely of Impure: Reinventing the Word (conundrum press, 2001) and is currently working on a new book with the TouVA Collective (comprised of Anne Bérubé, Sylvie Tourangeau and Stanton) developing salient notions on how performance is practiced and on the question of ‘the performative.’

WORKSHOP SETTING
A magical location that is most known for its summer retreats, Artscape Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island promises a wintry paradise. In the cozy quarters of a former schoolhouse, our workshop will be held in the Fireplace room – a space where participants will be able to enjoy intensive working by day, and relaxed lounging in the evenings by the hearth. AGP also offers a beach sauna on the water and extra-curricular activities such as ice sculpture making. As the island is significantly more isolated in the winter, this intensive week-long retreat will provide the possibility of an increased concentrated focus on process in a convivial and inviting setting. Imagine it: performance-art-camp meets winter wonderland at a snowy February chalet hideaway!

6. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: CATR/ACRT 2014

CATR/ACRT 2014
Canadian Association for Theatre Research / Association Canadienne de la Recherche Théâtrale

Call for Submissions for Conference 24-27 May 2014 Brock University

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
360°of Engagement: Publicly-situated performance—Publicly-situating performance process

This seminar aims to provide a forum for those on (or between) the borders of various disciplines — activist, artist, scholar — to explore the relationship between theory and praxis through a shared devising process. Each participant will develop a short performance intervention, to take place on or in the near vicinity of the campus, during breaks between conference sessions. We are interested in proposals that engage the particularities of Brock as a public space – architectural, institutional, virtual, quotidian, geopolitical – and that explore how multiply-located bodies are differently interpellated as they negotiate the space through both their presence and their absence.

In addition to publicly-situated performances we are interested in publicly situating the always complex and often hidden navigations across the intersecting terrains of artistic creation, scholarly inquiry, and political activism. This process will take the form of a blog that will act virtual studio in which we can participate in a collective devising jam session and a public forum.

Timeline
January: Via the blog, seminar organizers will launch share artifacts (images, maps, articles) from a site-visit to Brock.

January - May: Participants will connect and begin sharing their processes and providing feedback via the blog. Participants will be expected to visit the blog, to share elements of their devising processes (3-4 entries), and to give feedback (2-3 entries) on the devising process of other group members.

May–CATR Conference: Performance interventions will take place during the first two days of the conference. Each participant will attend one intervention as an observer. At the post-performance seminar, we will share reflections on both the process and performance.

We welcome proposals from artists/scholars/activists interested in animating and activating public space via performance. We encourage submissions from graduate students and non-affiliated artists. The group will be limited to eight projects. Interested participants are asked to submit:

A 300-word abstract outlining your proposed project. We welcome projects still in the early stages of development. A 150-200 word bio.

Please submit proposals to seminar organizers Kimberley McLeod (kmcleod1@yorku.ca) and Helene Vosters (hvosters@yorku.ca) by 13 January 2014.

7. CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: 8 DAYS III by Public Recordings
Deadline date: January 15, 2014; City: Toronto, Canada; Source: Public Recordings

8 DAYS III: A Gathering of Choreographers
Artscape Gibraltar Point, Toronto Island
June 16-24, 2014

8 DAYS is an intensive encounter open to all Canadian choreographers. The gathering values curiosity, creative risk-taking and reflection with a fluidity around theory and practice in order to deepen choreographic work.

Selected by open call, six Canadian choreographers working in Canada or abroad will be invited to join past participants of the two previous 8 DAYS encounters. The selection committee is comprised of three past participants and a guest. Up to 20 artists will embark on a co-authored adventure influenced by its surroundings, created by those present, and guided by their overlapping and divergent experience. Participants are asked to arrive with an openness about what this encounter might be, a willingness to expose and share, and a rigour around intellectual and artistic exchange.

The ongoing 8 DAYS project addresses a need for peer-to-peer choreographic development in Canada, insisting that this mode is crucial to the continued relevance of the art form. Instigated in 2012 by Ame Henderson and Tedd Robinson, the subsequent encounters stem from the 8 DAYS and 8 DAYS II participants’ desire to continue this artistic exchange. How dance artists work is intimately related to what they create. Theory and practice, talking and making, doing and reflecting, and the systems we do and don't rely on are understood as interwoven threads of creative development. 8 DAYS is an opportunity to collide practices to provoke, invigorate and inspire each other.

8 DAYS escapes the pressures of production-driven work to create space to reflect on one’s current practice and to envision – through dialogue and experimentation – new artistic possibilities.

Each participant is responsible for facilitating or planning a portion of the shared time. Days are primarily structured around group meals and also include sharing and exploring work and methods, reading, open discussion, as well as time for leisure and personal reflection.

It is imperative that 8 DAYS engages with the community at large. To this end, each participant will be asked to respond to the concept of documentation in order to share the experience. Participants propose and create responses specific to 8 DAYS during or immediately following the gathering. This co-authored documentation is then disseminated via a framework determined by the contributors in order to share the process and its outcomes.

Logistical Details
8 DAYS III will be held at Artscape Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island. Housed in a former school, Artscape Gibraltar Point, offers 35,000 square feet of multi-use space. Artists will enjoy private accommodations, bright and spacious studios, a shared kitchen and lounge, free wi-fi, and bike rentals. This idyllic beachfront property has the feeling of a remote cottage getaway but is a short fifteen-minute ferry ride from downtown Toronto.

The participating artists will arrive on Monday, June 16th, and depart Tuesday, June 24th, 2014. Public Recordings has applied for funding to cover travel costs and meals. Funding results should be known by the end of March 2014. Participants are encouraged to seek further funding to support their participation.

DEADLINE: Jan 15, 2014

8 fest presents Circles of Confusion by Kyle Whitehead
Saturday January 25, 2013

SPK Polish Combatants Hall
206 Beverley Street, Toronto
7PM

Sponsored by FADO Performance Art Centre

Circles of Confusion is a generative image and sound based expanded cinema installation and performative work composed of dual Super 8 film-loop projections each coupled with a mirrored pair of optically-controlled sine-wave oscillators. Built to function like a Theremin, one of the earliest analog electronic synthesizers, these scratch built circuits are controlled by light-dependent sensors that modulate audible pitch and volume. As film-loops are mixed live the sound is simultaneously generated in real-time by reflected light and these four Optical-Theremins propagate a cacophony of sine-wave tones that are directly proportional to the intensity of the projected images – hand processed Super 8 film-loops that are matched but not mirrored pairs. The reactionary nature of the relationship between image and sound becomes self-evident to the viewer within moments as the sound shifts dramatically from slow, rumbling drones when projected images are darkest, to higher-pitched vibrations when they are brightest. These generative and reciprocating conditions of Circles of Confusion create a hyper-awareness of the boundaries that exist between two distinct processes of sensory perception and blur the conventional divisions between them by suggesting that they are at once complementary and transmutable.

Since 2009, Johnny Amore has been taking portraits of artists who are active in the international performance and live art scene. The publication “Performers” contains 58 portraits from the series.

The “Performers” publication does not represent a documentation of live performances, but a collection of personalities with an unusual character and specific life styles that are using performance and live art as their main medium. Most of the portraits have been taken immediately after a live performance; the intensity of the moment can be seen on the face of the artist.

The publication contains some portrayed artists quotes, which unfold their thoughts on the specifics of performance and live art, in relation to documentation and photography.

The foreword is written by Pia Hovi-Assad, exhibition curator at Pori Art Museum. The publication is being published in connection with the exhibition Johnny Amore: Performers 27th Septmber-24th November 2013 at the Pori Art Museum, Finland.
