1. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: FADO’s Emerging Artists Series 2014

Durational performance is mode of live art where the artist works directly with the medium of time. Over the course of hours, days or longer the performer and the audience can experience a physical, mental, spiritual and/or emotional transformation. Durational performance functions to bring the performer and the audience into the moment; time is made palatable and visceral. Artists like Teching Hsieh, Alastair MacLennan, and most famously, Marina Abromavic, demonstrate how durational performance art can use mental and physical endurance to challenge the commoditization of art by offering an experience of art that is ephemeral by nature.
FADO is seeking proposals of durational performance works from emerging artists to be presented in our 2014 edition of the Emerging Artists Series, entitled 11:45PM. Performances should be a minimum of 6-hours and a maximum of 4-days. FADO and Xpace define emerging artists as those who are 2-3 years out of school, are at the beginning stages of their careers, and have not yet had the opportunity for a professional presentation of their work.
The series is curated by Kate Barry in consultation with Xpace and a committee of local emerging artists. The deadline for submissions is December 15, 2013.
PLEASE NOTE: This series seeks to highlight the work of Toronto, regional and Canadian artists. This is not an international call. (Our budgets can’t support international submissions/artists.) In addition, by “emerging” we are referring to artists who are in the beginning stages of their careers and who have not had a professional presentation of their work. Please contact us for clarification if needed.

Organic Behavior and Intentional Action: The practice of the performer
This three-day intensive masterclass will explore fundmental elements of the actor’s craft such as organicity, relation, contact, impulse, intention, action and reaction, the relation between process and form, and strive towards an understanding of the difference between movement and action.
Under the direction of Mario Biagini, participants will work on “songs of tradition” and on elements of the physical training developed at the Workcentre of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards over the past 27 years.
This masterclass will allow participants to approach the basic aspects of practical research at the Workcenter and to discover their own individual and unique approach to creation.

360°of Engagement: Publicly-situated performance—Publicly-situating performance process
This seminar aims to provide a forum for those on (or between) the borders of various disciplines — activist, artist, scholar — to explore the relationship between theory and praxis through a shared devising process. Each participant will develop a short performance intervention, to take place on or in the near vicinity of the campus, during breaks between conference sessions. We are interested in proposals that engage the particularities of Brock as a public space – architectural, institutional, virtual, quotidian, geopolitical – and that explore how multiply-located bodies are differently interpellated as they negotiate the space through both their presence and their absence.
In addition to publicly-situated performances we are interested in publicly situating the always complex and often hidden navigations across the intersecting terrains of artistic creation, scholarly inquiry, and political activism. This process will take the form of a blog that will act virtual studio in which we can participate in a collective devising jam session and a public forum.
Timeline
January: Via the blog, seminar organizers will launch share artifacts (images, maps, articles) from a site-visit to Brock.
January - May: Participants will connect and begin sharing their processes and providing feedback via the blog. Participants will be expected to visit the blog, to share elements of their devising processes (3-4 entries), and to give feedback (2-3 entries) on the devising process of other group members.
May–CATR Conference: Performance interventions will take place during the first two days of the conference. Each participant will attend one intervention as an observer. At the post-performance seminar, we will share reflections on both the process and performance.
We welcome proposals from artists/scholars/activists interested in animating and activating public space via performance. We encourage submissions from graduate students and non-affiliated artists. The group will be limited to eight projects. Interested participants are asked to submit:
A 300-word abstract outlining your proposed project. We welcome projects still in the early stages of development. A 150-200 word bio.

A GATHERING OF CHOREOGRAPHERS AT ARTSCAPE GIBRALTAR POINT, TORONTO ISLAND | JUNE 16-24, 2014
8 DAYS is an intensive encounter open to all Canadian choreographers. The gathering values curiosity, creative risk-taking and reflection with a fluidity around theory and practice in order to deepen choreographic work.
Selected by open call, six Canadian choreographers working in Canada or abroad will be invited to join past participants of the two previous 8 DAYS encounters. The selection committee is comprised of three past participants and a guest. Up to 20 artists will embark on a co-authored adventure influenced by its surroundings, created by those present, and guided by their overlapping and divergent experience. Participants are asked to arrive with an openness about what this encounter might be, a willingness to expose and share, and a rigour around intellectual and artistic exchange.
The ongoing 8 DAYS project addresses a need for peer-to-peer choreographic development in Canada, insisting that this mode is crucial to the continued relevance of the art form. Instigated in 2012 by Ame Henderson and Tedd Robinson, the subsequent encounters stem from the 8 DAYS and 8 DAYS II participants’ desire to continue this artistic exchange. How dance artists work is intimately related to what they create. Theory and practice, talking and making, doing and reflecting, and the systems we do and don't rely on are understood as interwoven threads of creative development. 8 DAYS is an opportunity to collide practices to provoke, invigorate and inspire each other.
8 DAYS escapes the pressures of production-driven work to create space to reflect on one’s current practice and to envision – through dialogue and experimentation – new artistic possibilities.
Each participant is responsible for facilitating or planning a portion of the shared time. Days are primarily structured around group meals and also include sharing and exploring work and methods, reading, open discussion, as well as time for leisure and personal reflection.
It is imperative that 8 DAYS engages with the community at large. To this end, each participant will be asked to respond to the concept of documentation in order to share the experience. Participants propose and create responses specific to 8 DAYS during or immediately following the gathering. This co-authored documentation is then disseminated via a framework determined by the contributors in order to share the process and its outcomes.
Logistical Details
8 DAYS III will be held at Artscape Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island. Housed in a former school, Artscape Gibraltar Point, offers 35,000 square feet of multi-use space. Artists will enjoy private accommodations, bright and spacious studios, a shared kitchen and lounge, free wi-fi, and bike rentals. This idyllic beachfront property has the feeling of a remote cottage getaway but is a short fifteen-minute ferry ride from downtown Toronto.
The participating artists will arrive on Monday, June 16th, and depart Tuesday, June 24th, 2014. Public Recordings has applied for funding to cover travel costs and meals. Funding results should be known by the end of March 2014. Participants are encouraged to seek further funding to support their participation.

The Visual Studies program at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream appointment in Visual Studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor and will be effective July 1, 2014.
Candidates should be artists with a strong record of exhibition, including international exposure (residencies, exhibitions, publications or commissions) and demonstrated excellence in teaching and research in a range of contemporary studio and/or media-based practices including (but not restricted to), drawing, installation and 3-dimensional spatial investigations, digitally-based exploration and design, performance, time-based media (film, video, audio) and other forms of artists' multiples. Scholars with practice-based experience in the visual arts may also be considered.
The Daniels Faculty would be an especially engaging environment for someone whose creative work, or research explores the specificities of contemporary art and design practice from a perspective that is historically informed, technologically advanced, and theoretically acute. Candidates for this position would be expected to bring a substantial program of creative research, and to demonstrate not only a capacity to fuse their agenda with the interests and commitments of the Faculty, but to build new research capacities and relationships.
The search will focus on an individual with a demonstrable background in art practice that possesses an MFA or other advanced master's degree, or Ph.D. Teaching in some combination of studio, seminar and lecture based formats will be required. Administrative experience or the demonstrated capacity to assist the Faculty in this regard would be a plus. Evidence of excellence in both teaching and research is required. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The 10th edition of the 7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art will take place in Toronto from October 26 to November 2, 2014. Curated and organized by a non-profit artist collective, the festival presents innovative and progressive contemporary performance art by local, national and international artists. This call for submissions is an invitation restricted to artists from Canada. We are looking for emerging, mid-career and established Canadian artists alongside international artists to showcase the breadth and depth of current contemporary performance art practice.

In 1976 I saw a void in the art world: major institutions were not seeing that downtown artists were creating ephemeral works dealing with the social, political, economic and philosophical world — socially engaged art. Ever since, we’ve been keeping such art practice from falling between the cracks.
Now it is 2013, and climate change is upon us. Many of us do our part — recycling bottles, cans and plastic bags; forgoing AC; buying local produce — although in light of our planet’s most calamitous problem, these steps feel ineffectual. Regina Cornwell, an independent curator, proposed a city-wide exhibition by artists who wish to confront climate change; in the coming year, Franklin Furnace will launch her project, InClimate: Climate Change Solutions, Awareness and Action. This ambitious exhibition focuses on underserved urban communities and confronts global warming through art by calling upon artists, in collaboration with climate change experts, to find solutions and antidotes. The participating artists are Lillian Ball, Lynn Cazabon, Billy X. Curmano, Agnes Denes, Alicia Grullon, Planetary One collaborative, and Andrea Polli.
Here are examples of some InClimate projects now underway:
Mega Dunes: For the People of the Rockaways: Internationally acclaimed artist Agnes Denes, who has been called “the mother of eco-art,” is producing a pilot for her Mega Dunes. This is InClimate’s only permanent work. InClimate has partnered with community organization Rockaway Waterfront Alliance to identify local adults and youth to plant salt-resistant trees and other vegetation on the pilot dune. Denes’ project will contribute to the artistic heritage of the City of New York; build protection and resilience for the Rockaway residents and their homes, schools, businesses, places of worship and beaches which were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Sandy; and be a catalyst for youth to consider careers as artists, landscape architects, oceanographers and more.
Particle Falls is a night-time projection of cascading blue falls on an outdoor wall. Suddenly, disturbing blotches invade the soothing image. Media artist Andrea Polli’s project employs specialized technology to monitor, record, and make visible the amount of invisible CO2 and other pollutants in the air. More blotches appear when a jetliner flies overhead, less when a motorcycle passes nearby, so viewers can immediately grasp the reality of climate change.
EcoNet is a phytoremediation project which the Planetary One team of artists will create with children in a Brooklyn public school, P.S. 20, the Clinton Hill School, with which Franklin Furnace has partnered since 2006. The students will help build mini-wetlands and place them in their schoolyard. Specialized sensors in these tiny marshes monitor the process of the water’s decontamination. Indoors, a dynamically designed installation driven by sensor data allows viewers to experience results in a variety of media that chart the constantly changing process as the plants decontaminate water.
I believe artists can and should try to change the world with their work, and never get tired of seeing how artists engage with the real world. Established in 1993, FADO Performance Inc. (Performance Art Centre) is a not-for-profit artist-run centre for performance art based in Toronto, Canada. FADO exists to provide a stable, ongoing, supportive forum for creating and presenting performance art.
