1. EVENT: FADO Performance Art Centre presents Duorama #120 at Sunday Drive
Date: August 30, 2014; City: Warkworth, Canada
FADO is proud to present Part 1: Duorama #114 - #117 and Part 2: Duorama #119-121, a series of performances created by Paul Couillard and Ed Johnson. Partners in life and art, Paul and Ed have been creating the Duorama series for the last 14 years. The series has been sprinkled throughout the year, starting with a Duorama #114 in February, and culminating in Duorama #121 in September.
Duorama #119 and #120 are presented in the context of Warkworth, presented by Sunday Drive Art Projects.
Sunday Drive Art Projects has brought together a roster of some of Toronto's most active artist-run centres and collectives to present satellites in the beautiful village of Warkworth, temporarily transforming it into a hub of contemporary art. From August 23 – September 6, visit Warkworth to see works that are rarely seen outside of metropolitan centres, giving them new life in the context of a rural setting.
Warkworth is truly a special community. Just 90 minutes from Toronto, it’s situated in beautiful countryside, and has lovely historic architecture. Warkworth is home to a large community of artists, designers and architects that have helped make it a uniquely liberal, stylish village with a very creative sensibility. It balances the best of country life with contemporary taste, evident in the shops and cafes that populate it's Main Street. Just 90 minutes from Toronto, it is the perfect road trip destination.
Duorama #120 takes place on August 30, along with an artist’s talk, beginning at 1pm.
ABOUT DUORAMA
Since 2000, Paul Couillard and Ed Johnson have worked together on the performance art series Duorama. Playful, beguiling and often minimalist, these pieces explore notions of relationship, and draw on collaborative and competitive tensions that underlie all partnerships. Responding to site and examining cultural attitudes toward male intimacy are key elements of Duorama. Recurring themes revolve around shifting interpretations of what is political and what is personal. Many of the works can be read in terms of the current social and political climate surrounding gay culture, offering askance references to issues such as gay marriage, HIV-status, and portrayals of gay culture. To date, 113 Duorama performances have been presented at galleries, festivals and various events in Canada, France, Poland, Croatia, Ukraine, Belarus, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, the USA, Singapore, Ireland and the UK.

Survival – International Performance Festival 2014
Performances – Interventions in Public Spaces – Workshops – Lab
From August 29 to September 6, 2014, under this year’s theme, SURVIVAL, the international Performance Art Festival – a joint project of Open Space Berlin and the B-Lock Festival – is taking place in Berlin for the fourth time. With its unique combination of modules – Workshop, Lab, Interventions in Public Space, and Performances – the festival is one of the most important platforms for performance art in Berlin.
The Festival Program presents a bold cross-section of current positions of performance artists and their huge diversity. Radical performers, political actions, and poetic, mystical, and symbolic performances provide richly contrasting insights into the nomadic nature of contemporary performance practice.

4. EVENT: Performance Art Bergen (PAB) presents Between Sky & Sea
Date: August 30, 2014; City: Bergen, Norway; Source: Agnes Nedregard
Performance Art Bergen (PAB) is happy to inform that the international performance art festival Between Sky & Sea will take place on Saturday August 30, 2014, between 13:00 and 19:00. The festival is based outdoors, meaning the artworks of the 13 artists will be presented to the audience in the landscape of Herdla. This year they are located in the former military area above Valen (former German military airport). There will be a café for visitors serving simple food and drinks during the event.
The artists are gathered for a week having the opportunity to work within the environment of the site. This year’s festival has the subtitle GIVEN PLACE. The phrase is inspired by the work of professor in literature Anniken Greve at the University of Tromsø. In her article COMMUNITY AND PLACE, Greve is discussing some interesting aspects of place through the phrases GIVEN PLACE, MADE PLACE and LIVED PLACE using Aristotle’s philosophy and Irish poet Seamus Heaney in her argumentation/explanation.
This year we are collaborating with Polish In Situ Foundation. In Situ is running CONTEXTS: Festival of Ephemeral Arts in Sokolovsko, Poland. Their 4th edition takes place July 25-29, 2014.

7. EVENT: Infr’action 2014
Date: September 10-14, 2014; City: Sète, France; Source: Jonas Stampe
10 years of Infr’Action is a moment to celebrate. Like the son of Sète Paul Valéry so well said, ”Memory is the future of the past”, and for Infr’Action the future is with us, as is our collective memory.
Out of our many accomplishments during these 10 years, maybe the most important is how Infr’Action have succeeded in bridging the gap between art and life, between avant-garde creation and the people. Our slogan since our beginning seemed utopian, Avant-Garde and Popular. But that which at first seemed utopian has today become a reality. From which we learn that it everything is a question of time and of course of action. Two of the specific characteristics of performance art, and the qualities of presence: time and action.
Infr’Action is today a model of a cultural democracy, how art can reach out to an audience unfamiliar with contemporary art and succeed with it. Of course, it wasn’t easy in the beginning, but today 10 years later we can look back and see that we have accomplished what we only were able to hope for.
Since the first festival in 2005 Infr’Action have presented more than 300 artists from over 48 countries, but also initiated international partnerships co-organized events in cities like Paris, Venice, New York and Canton, and promoted French artists abroad. Its role in contemporary performance art is essential, not only in France, but internationally.
10 years of Infr’Action is also a moment when we should reflect on our journey, on our past, and find out where we want to go in the here and now and of course in the future.
So when we celebrate this 10th year of Infr’Action we will not do it in any spectacular way, but will stay true to our own vision of the importance of proximity between the artists and the public, to simply exist on a human scale. But thanks to our experience we have also developed a new event design, which we think will give more time to reflection, to encounter and exchange, and to experimentation.

8. EVENT: RiAP 2014 Conferences/Performances
Date: September 11-14 & 18-21, 2014; City: Quebec City, Canada; Source: RiAP
TAKING THE PULSE OF LIVING ART DURING TEN DAYS.
“The Rencontre international d’art performance de Québec confirms the growing importance of performance art practices with its 18th edition, which also marks the organization’s 30th year of activity. From September 11th to 14th and from September 18th to 21st, RiAP 2014 will be inviting 26 artists from Cuba, Norway, the Philippines and Poland, as well as from four different Canadian cities (Calgary, Regina, Victoria and Winnipeg) to perform in the heart of Quebec City’s Saint Roch neighbourhood.
Two weeks of original, surprising and uncompromising artistic activities are in store! Six evenings of performance will be held on the festival’s Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Each of these evenings will give audiences the chance to peer into the worlds of performers from a different part of the world. On the Sundays, conferences and open discussions will be held, allowing for exchanges and collaborative contemplation. Critics, art theorists and organizers will discuss the differences and parallels between various performative practices. The issues and challenges faced by artists in foreign countries will also be looked at.
For this edition, the RiAP will also be sending the invited artists on tour. Artist centers and cultural organizations from Carleton to Rouyn-Noranda and Regina will be accompanying us in this adventure by receiving artists from the RiAP in their centers.”
~Richard Martel, Artistic Director
PRESENTATION OF THE ARTISTS
As with previous editions, the artists who are invited to RIAP 2014 were selected by different international curators under the supervision of the event’s artistic director Richard Martel. This method allows for a representative and authentic selection of artists who represent approaches found in each country.
Nelson Herrera Isla was responsible for selecting the Cuban artists, Kurt Johannessen selected the Norwegian artists, while Artur Tajber selected the Polish artists and Roy Lu and Eileen Legaspi-Ramirez chose the performers from the Philippines. As for the selection of Canadian artists, a cultural organization was chosen to select artists in each of the cities that are represented at this year’s festival. These organizations are: Open Space in Victoria, Neutral Ground in Regina, M:ST in Calgary and La Maison des artistes visuels francophones in Winnipeg.
The work of the artists who are participating in RIAP 2014 is directly in line with our organization’s preoccupations, that is to say, promoting the practice and theorization of living art, as well as social transformation through art. The event puts forth an authentic vision of the various approaches to living art, as well as the socio-political and cultural contexts in which these practices evolve.

9. WORKSHOP: Solo Dancing with Dawn Carleton
Date: Sept 13-Nov 15, 2014; City: Toronto, Canada; Source: Dawn Carleton
10 weeks - $500* (3 participants per class)
Saturdays September 13 – November 15 2014, 10 a.m. - noon
IGAC Studio @ Artscape Youngplace, 180 Shaw St. Suite 103
"The class…was helpful for me in many ways, on many levels. It felt like an engagement with pure creativity.” - Former participant
In this masterclass-format intensive we use the pared-down structure of unaccompanied solo improvisation to discover what each participant is doing when they improvise, clarify what they would like to be doing, and practice staying connected to their intention, or score, in performance. Beginning with one-minute improvisations, students will be led in a focused process involving dancing, reflecting, observing and more dancing as they build toward 10-minute improvisations in the final class. Additional exercises will be introduced to elucidate specific concerns and interests as they arise. Each class will begin with 30 minutes of silent self-directed warm-up/practice. An optional informal showing of work will take place at the end of the session.
This class is designed for dancers interested in moving beyond habitual blocks and limitations, developing presence, skill and impact in improvised performance and establishing their own body of improvisation-based work. Practitioners in related fields seeking advanced study are also welcome.
For more information and to register, please contact instructor: dawnecarleton@yahoo.com
Dawne Carleton’s work as a dance artist, instructor and creative process facilitator is rooted in an improvisation practice that spans over 20 years. She received a Canada Council grant for Masters-level studies at the European Dance Development Center in The Netherlands. She is a choreographer who “enhance[s] our understanding of who and what we are as embodied creatures” (The Dance Current). She brings a deep sense of listening to one-on-one creative process facilitation work with artists from diverse fields. In addition to Solo Dancing Carleton leads Group Practice, a weekly space for movement-based practice and dialogue.
*$100 non-refundable deposit due upon registration; remainder of fees must be received by Friday, September 5 2014.
Group Practice with Dawn Carleton
$20 / PWYC
Maximum 10 participants
Fridays 9 – 12 noon; facilitator present from 8:45
Intergalactic Arts Collective Studio
180 Shaw St. Suite 103 (Artscape YoungPlace)
Group Practice is a space for practicing, sharing and valuing individual movement practices. The thinking behind these sessions is rooted in post-modern dance and practitioners from all fields are welcome.
Sessions begin with silent self-directed practice from 9:00 to 10:45, followed by a 15-minute break/transition. A facilitated dialogue takes place in the final hour, beginning with a simple invitation for participants to share any aspect of their practice. Depending on participants’ interests, this could evolve into in-depth discussion or a facilitated embodied exploration of emergent themes.
Please trust that your current practice is “enough” to participate in these sessions. The emphasis here is not on having impressive work to share but rather the reverse – through sharing, to discover and remember the richness of engaging in practice. In the year since this practice began, all who have attended – dancers, yoga practitioners, musicians, film-makers, gardeners, performance artists, writers, people who lie on their living room floor and many more – have found shared inspiration and been valued contributors to our process.

Free of charge ANTI Festival is a meeting place for artists and audiences fascinated by how art shapes and responds to the places and spaces of everyday life.
Children and teenagers will be the focus of this year's ANTI - Contemporary Art Festival, which presents site- and time-specific works made for public space. The international festival programme consists of work where the youngest family members or youngsters nearing adulthood are either the theme or an active part of the production. 14. WORKSHOP: PAS Youth studies in cooperation with the M:ST Festival
Date: Sept 27 – Oct 3, 2014; City: Calgary, Canada; Source: BBB Johannes Deimling
The title of this PASyouth studies was given by a young boy who asked this question right after we had finished a PASyouth studies in Dresden 2014. It was a pure expression of realizing that from tomorrow on his world will be different and changed.
The question touches common feelings about our future and provokes doubts, wishes and desires. We mainly ask ourselves this question in order to understand a change or a shift that has happened to us, but it also encourages us to orientate ourselves, and it activates our curiosity to search.
By nature, teenagers are on a constant search and a hunt for possibilities of seeing and understanding the world in which they live, yet this endeavor often collides with so-called “reality”. During the PASyouth studies we want to confront this “reality” with performativity to formulate artistic visions of ‘what is tomorrow?’ and try to turn the question into a direction. We will facilitate and encourage the young people in the Studies to use performative strategies in order to arrive at an understanding of their personal visions and aesthetics. As the closing searches are made, we will come together and share our final performances at a public event as part of the M:ST Festival. BBB Johannes Deimling and Emily Promise Allison will support the young people with their creative processes.
Call for participants
This 6-day workshop will take place Saturday – Sunday, and Monday –Friday (3-6 pm). A final presentation of works will take place on Sunday October 5, 2-5 pm.

16. EVENT: City of Women International Festival of Contemporary Art 2014
Date: October 2-12, 2014; City: Ljublijana, Slovenia; Source: City of Women
Between October 2nd and 12th, the 20th International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women will take place at different venues in Ljubljana. This year's trans-disciplinary festival under the title Survival Tactics will focus on the working conditions of artists, the precariously employed and the self-employed in the world of arts and culture who are confronted with ever-more harsh conditions of work. This difficult environment particularly affects the sectors, where women account for the majority of the labour force, a fact empirically proven in Slovenia over recent years. After all, the quest for a 'winning' survival tactic has been a constant requirement for festivals too, and City of Women is anything but an exception is this respect.
The overture to the 2014 festival will be events (round table, the film programme in Slovenska Kinoteka, etc.) based around the festival's twentieth anniversary, held in September at different venues.
The 20th City of Women festival will see the participation of the following female artists, theoreticians and activists: Beatriz Preciado, Andreja Kulunčić, Nataša Živković, Neda Rusjan Bric, Larissa Sansour, Raeda Saadeh, Mala Kline, Alexis O'Hara & Stephen Lawson, Mirel Wagner, Marina Gržinić, Ngozi Onwurah, Nevline Nnaji, Silvia Federici, Bryony Kimmings, Liad Land, Elena Molinaro, Ursula Martinez, Saša Rakef, Jasmina Založnik, Lula Pena, Zavoloka & Laetitia Morais, Andrea Miltnerova, Suzie Templeton, Lotta Geffenblad, La Ribot, Emmauelle Bercot, Simona Semenič and the creators of the Image Snatchers.

20. WORKSHOP: PAS / Venice International Performance Art Week
Deadline date: December 1, 2014; City: Venice, Italy; Source: BBB Johannes Deimling
PAS | Performance Art Studies is offering a new study format in the framework of the Learning Program of the VENICE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART WEEK. With ‘critical reflection’ we will extend our offers providing a theoretical discourse on Performance Art as an integral part of performative practice and its processes.
“We learn differently when we are learning to perform than when we are learning to understand what is being communicated to us. Reflection enables us to correct distortions in our beliefs and errors in problem solving. Critical reflection involves a critique of the presuppositions on which our beliefs have been built.” [Jack Mezirow, How critical reflection triggers transformative learning]
During the studies participants have the unique opportunity to witness the whole 2nd VENICE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART WEEK: seeing the exhibition, observing all live performances, meeting the artists, discuss and research what is presented with other like-minded people. Sharing our opinions and reflections and putting them into context will generate a vivid research on performative practice and help to understand complex structures and theories. Participants will mainly discuss, write, sketch, scribble, doodle, interview and document their views and shared opinions. These documents will be published at the end of the studies in an online publication.
Conditions:
The price for PAS #37 | ‘critical reflection’ is 150 Euro (100 Euro for former PAS participants). Participants are responsible for their accommodation, travel and food. To apply for the studies, please send an email with a CV and biography to:

21. EVENT: 2nd Venice International Performance Art Week

SAVE THE DATE!!!
2nd VENICE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART WEEK
“Ritual Body - Political Body”
Palazzo Mora, Strada Nova, 3659, Venice, Italy
13 - 20 December 2014
Following the first edition “Hybrid Body - Poetic Body” that took place in December 2012 at Palazzo Bembo, the 2nd VENICE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART WEEK will take place at Palazzo Mora in Venice from 13th to 20th December 2014 under the focus "Ritual Body - Political Body".
The live art exhibition project dedicated to contemporary performance art will showcase in its second edition works of over 50 international performance artists from around the globe, some of which are presented in cooperation with cultural institutions and foundations. Pioneers of this art discipline will exhibit alongside established and emerging artists, reflecting influences and current tendencies in the field. The project consists of a vibrant program of live performances, installations, photographic and video documentation, conferences, daily round table talks, a Study Room, a Movie Room and meetings with the participating artists, researchers and curators.
For the second edition with the focus “Ritual Body - Political Body” the 2nd VENICE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART WEEK 2014 aims to investigate a wide range of concepts such as: art as a space for civil negotiation where human ethical values are the core; interconnectivity; political confrontation; utopia; ecological issues; social and individual conflicts and responsibilities, and how the self relates to them, at the same time concentrating on the fact that the presence of human beings in this world is always more than a temporary condition.
The communication that can be triggered between artists and the audience is an essential element. The topics addressed during the week will relate to the need to look at social relations and the lives of individuals with greater care. Due to the specificity of the theme of this second edition “Ritual Body - Political Body”, the live performances and works on display will also seek to provide reflection and further considerations on how to find meaningful mechanisms to foster positive change through contemporary art and culture in a clearly vital way.
The VENICE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART WEEK wishes to enrich the highly renowned art scene in Venice with the audacious art form of performance art.
