1. FADO presents special one-day workshop with Yoshinori Niwa

FADO Performance Art Centre presents: Nonsense group photo of 111 Toronto citizens
Workshop with Yoshinori Niwa
July 17, 2009
1pm – 4pm

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
FADO Performance Art Centre, working in partnership with Gendai Gallery and their upcoming exhibition entitled The Arts of Togetherness, is pleased to present this special one-day workshop/group action with Japanese artist Yoshinori Niwa entitled Nonsense group photo of 111 Toronto citizens.
Nonsense group photo of 111 Toronto citizens is a playful one-day project in which the artist gathers together 111 citizens of Toronto for the sole purpose of taking a group photograph, with a large format camera, at a selected Toronto landmark or tourist location. Reminiscent of summer travels with the family, Nonsense group photo of 111 Toronto citizens is both a guillera intervention and a playful and hilarious group performance, documented in real time, elaborated by size and scale.
Join us to take a photo with artist Yoshinori Niwa!
Email FADO at info@performanceart.ca to sign up to be in the photo. Join us in Nonsense group photo of 111 Toronto citizens.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Yoshinori Niwa is a physical performance artist who often incorporates animals, plants, and the environment into his work. Niwa’s aim is to explore how to live with others, especially those with different life experience (ethno-cultural, economic, etc). Some of his performances are site-specific, however is especially interested in how performances change from venue to venue and between audiences, so he is well attuned to responding to that which is around him. Niwa is a graduate of the Tama Art University Department of Moving Images and Performing Arts (Tokyo) and he has performed in Britain, Canada, China, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, and Slovakia. He has also undertaken artistic residences through VENT Live Art (Oxford, UK), The Asahi Shimbun Foundation (Japan), and Tou Scene (Norway). In addition to his performance work, Niwa is active as a cultural producer in Japan and he has collaborated on a range of events and projects including the 2006 Tokyo-San Francisco Arts Festival. In 2007, he coordinated an international art festival titled "Artist as Activist," which took place in Tokyo.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The Arts of Togetherness is a multifaceted exhibition that gently challenges commonly held assumptions about contemporary art as a cultural practice. Working in collaboration with her chosen artists, guest curator Milena Placentile, offers a project that seeks to bridge differences in familiarity with contemporary art by encouraging audiences of all ages to contemplate different points of view concerning what qualifies as the expression of a community, and what is pertinent to definitions of cultural life.

The artists featured in this exhibition, Sandee Moore and Yoshinori Niwa, will transpose popular traditional and modern Japanese cultural activities such as sent_ (traditional bathhouses) and kite-flying, into new contexts in order to explore notions of interpersonal exchange and community, memory and imagination, and the passage of ideas over time.

Detailed information about Sandee Moore and Yoshinori Niwa can be found at:
www.gendai.ca

Exhibition runs from July 11 - August 23, 2009
Guest-curated by Milena Placentile

This exhibition is generously supported by: The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, The Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Manitoba Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, FADO Performance Art Centre, and Tani Miki.

2. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Escapist Action
Deadline: June 30, 2009; Source: FADO

FADO Performance Inc. is currently seeking proposals for live performances that consider trends of escapism during periods of economic crisis and recession. Unusual investment structures, increased unemployment rates and the panic ridden news media have everyone worried about a downturn in the economy and looking for distractions.

Recent news media reports have highlighted “recession time” trends including increased sales in alcohol, fast foods and cheap forms of entertainment.  Business analysts are predicting that there will be a shift from high-cost forms of entertainment to low. It is believed that this development, in hard times, is due to individuals wanting to escape from their problems and troubles. During past recessions, people have turned to escapist forms of entertainment to help them feel better and more secure about their financial situation. In bad times, we still need our good times, maybe more than ever.

FADO Performance Art Centre is developing a series of new performance works considering the connection between recessions and escapism. Performances artists are invited to think about the following when submitting a proposal:

• Escaping
• Nesting at home with cheap entertainment (reality television, video games, the internet & cooking your own dinner)
• D.I.Y. Entertainment  (creating your own entertainment systems)
• Stay-cations (vacationing at home)
• Sharing Economies (borrowing instead of buying)
• The never-ending sale
• 2 for 1 special
• Increased cinema / movie sales and decreased attendance at live music and theatre performances.

Proposals should include a CV, bio, and description of proposed performance, images/video of past work, and any other relevant information.

Klatch (an informal gathering, as for conversation)
Part of the BELONGING NETWORK (series)

Friendship, a term used to denote co-operative and supportive behavior between two or more people. FRIEND as currency is the subject of this social investigation. This work investigates the social etiquettes, protocols, rules and spontaneity of Friendship.
With special Guest performance d. Bradley Muir.

Saturday June 27, 2009, from 10:00 PM to 12:00 PM
Suggested cover charge of $10.00
106 Superior Street, Victoria, BC
250-380-9515

www.thesuperior.ca

With this work you are invited to question what are your own protocols or rules of what makes a FRIEND. And explore the consequences. Software will be developed which immediately uploads and adds your “friendship” to dozens of online Social Utility Networks (SNS). After which personal contact and a physical “Friendship” will be explored as below.

Here are some possibilities:
1. Eye contact
2. Physical contact
3. Salutation/greeting (paralanguage or gesture)
4. Exchange either object and/or friends name.

According to Wikipedia there is a decline of friendships in North American civilization. According to a 2006 study documented in the journal the American Sociological Review, Americans are thought to be suffering a loss in the quality and quantity of close friendships since at least 1985. The study states 25% of North Americans have no close confidants, and the average total number of confidants per citizen has dropped from four to two. According to the study:
-North Americans’ dependence on family as a safety net went up from 57% to 80%
-North Americans’ dependence on a partner or spouse went up from 5% to 9%
-Research has found a link between fewer friendships (especially in quality) and psychological and physiological regression.

15. EVENT: PLOT, ENGAGE, DISPERSE
Date: June 27-28, 2009; Source: Keith Cole

PLOT, ENGAGE, DISPERSE
as part of "Alternative Arts"

Plot, Engage, Disperse is Pride Toronto's experimental mixed art programme. With an emphasis on interactivity, P/E/D is comprised of performance art, intimate conversation, craft making and singing along - but that's not all! Blurring the lines between art and experience, high and low culture, playfulness and thoughtfulness P/E/D takes art out of the galleries and brings it onto the streets for all Pride art lovers.

Artist and P/E/D curator Daryl Vocat has again assembled a unique group of artists and performers this year for an event that is perfect for the queer and queer friendly urban explorer. Stuff your face at a Dyke Day afternoon pie eating contest with Lex Vaughn, get crafty in the FreeZone making felt moustaches, one-inch buttons, or bring something to have screen printed! Commemorate Pride 2009 by having Duorama stamp you pennies. Reflect on history with a screening of the documentary General Idea: Art AIDS and the Fin de Siecle. Drop by the P/E/D tent in Norman Jewison Park to watch a series of animated videos. Join the crowds on Saturday June 28th at 10pm in Paul Kane Parkette for a secret sing along. Don't know the words? Don't worry you'll still have "something to sing about!"

P/E/D is truly a unique experience and you are encouraged to choose your own adventure in Church / Wellesley's unique park system.

Daryl Vocat, born in Regina, Saskatchewan, is a visual artist living and working in Toronto. He has had solo exhibitions at Toronto's Thrush Holmes Empire, Open Studio, and York Quay Gallery. He has also had solo exhibitions at SNAP gallery in Edmonton, Eastern Edge Gallery in St John's, James K. Bartleman Art Gallery in Elliot Lake, The Wilfred Laurier Gallery in Waterloo, and Malaspina Printmakers Gallery in Vancouver. He has participated in several group exhibitions both in Canada and beyond.

POW! POW! 2nd annual mini performance art festival in San Francisco is searching for original "cutting edgy" performance art works!

Are you willing to take more risks in your performances? Is there any performance piece you always wanted to do, but couldn’t, because it didn’t fit into your funding organization’s agenda? Did you limit your artistic vision because you thought it might "offend" your politically correct grandmother or someone else? If so, your prayers have been answered! POW! POW! 2nd annual mini performance art festival opens a free expression space for any kind of performance art with "no strings attached!"

The only festival of its type, POW! POW! actually encourages and supports performance artists to do…whatever they want!!! Unlike other funded festivals, POW! POW! is a grass roots festival run by artists and for artists themselves. POW! POW! believes in expressing and/or experimenting with anything artists want without aesthetic, moral, or social limitations. Since POW! POW! is not funded, there are "no strings attached." In spring of 2008 the first POW! mini performance art festival was a huge success. We received press in the San Francisco Chronicle and numerous other local publications, and had sold out nights of our shows.  We anticipate the 2009 POW! POW! to be even better!!

POW! POW! is looking for low tech or semi-low tech body-based performance art. Selected works will be performed at The Climate Theater in San Francisco, California during our 2nd Annual mini performance art festival on October 15, 16, and 17th, 2009. http://www.climatetheater.com

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Meir Tati’s Art Force 1 at 1000sq Meter Free-style
Deadline: July 15, 2009; Source: Meri Tati

Art Force 1
Artists from Israel and around the world are invited to respond to the subject of propaganda with visual imagesin (in a4 format) and texts from various genres such as narrative fiction, poetry, philosophy and others. The selected works will first be exhibited in the Digital Art Centre in a dynamic exhibition space that will also provide the venue for a model airplane building workshop for children and teens. Later on the works will be dropped from a UAV over public areas (such as a busy park). In this way the art project reacts to the typical characteristics of the modern-day world, a world steeped in paranoia, psychological warfare, and deliberate disinformation of government, army and other factors.

The project title – Art Force 1 – is an ironic paraphrase of “Air Force 1” – the plane used by the President of the United States. This title was chosen because it questions the power of the international contemporary art world in comparison with that of countries and global superpowers. Can an object of art constitute an act of propaganda? Can it serve as a tool for propaganda? What does it advocate and on whose behalf does it do so? Can/may contemporary art still create a meaningful statement in the skeptical culture of the modern world? Is art an inner, self-contained dialogue or can it offer a chance for collaboration, for cultural activism and for an open, alternative, international debate using the internet culture?

Deadline: July 15, 2009

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Compose/Decompose (Toronto)
Deadline: July 15, 2009; Source: Don Simmons

The idea of beauty found in the morbid has been explored within multitudes of art movements and genres, developing our interpretive perception of what beauty truly is. Nature with a helping hand of time, plays an encompassing role of the dying and the living; composing to decomposing, and nurturing only to neglectfully perish again. That which desecrates grows. Although man is succeeding in repositioning himself within the natural cycle through elevated technology and mass consumption, in the end, we find ourselves in servitude of a relentless yet graceful continuum of Mother Nature. In this discourse a certain violence between the two eroding elements where harmony is disrupted, is virtually erotic and foreboding.

Keeping these themes in mind, The Deleon White Gallery, is requesting proposals no longer than 2 pages, describing a performance oriented piece under the duration of 30 minutes. Access to the interior and the exterior of the gallery (near the street) is accessible for the duration of the show as well, so think outside the box.

The Deleon White Gallery is a unique space that allows the transformation of aesthetic psyche and creative flexibility, under the encouraging guidance of Stephen DeLeon White. The gallery has recently welcomed one of Toronto's most exceptional and dynamic, non-traditional art communities: Performance Art and Live Theater. Seeing a successful exhibition featuring local and international performance artists, surrounding themes of nature and ecology, the gallery is honored to host another event, in keeping with the nature oriented background of the gallery. DWG has established itself as a venue committed to investigating social practices in relation to the environment they inhabit. With each new exhibition, the gallery continues to demonstrate it's commitment to the genius and creativity of its artists and to the philosophical issues that motivate their work.

Workshop with Thomas Lehmen (Berlin)
2. – 7. August 2009 (full days)

In his workshop, Thomas Lehmen will concentrate on the artistic exploration of public space. Over a period of six days the participants of the workshop will experiment with different strategies of creating a dialogue with communal spaces, of how to react to the resulting findings or how to include imaginary content in these results . The factual context of a city will thereby be brought into a creative relationship with artistic ideas, utopian fantasies and invented characters. A series of tailored, specific exercises will lead the workshop participants in exploring the city. On the final day of the Workshop, several “Working Rehearsals” will be presented to the public as part of the stromereien 09 Performance Festival Zürich.

The workshop is aimed at practising artists of various genres, specialists in related subject areas, and students of relevant subjects.

Thomas Lehmen is a choreographer, dancer and teacher. He studied at the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam from 1986 to 1990; since 1990 he has been living in Berlin where he developed numerous works and projects that have presented worldwide. Topics of repeated artistic interest include communication, cybernetics and the way in which the human being reflects over, and therefore influences, his environment. His methods of approaching material, which often use elements of verbal communication, are based on conceptional methods and forms of presentation.
Thomas Lehmen teaches at various universities in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin and Reykjavik and gives workshops both nationally and internationally. His teaching methods often utilise choreographical systems that lay focus on an individual artistic process.

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre seeks submissions for
THE 31st RHUBARB FESTIVAL
Feb 10 - 28, 2010
Festival Director Erika Hennebury

Call for Submissions for 2010
DEADLINE: 5PM, Friday July 31, 2009

For over 30 years The Rhubarb Festival has offered Toronto artists a critic-free environment to experiment with new theatrical explorations. First produced by Buddies in 1979, Rhubarb is more than a festival; it is a commentary on theatre - on how we create it, on how we present it, and on how we experience it. Here we allow the artist and the idea to be the centre of attention. The trappings of traditional theatre are purged in favour of a stripped-down approach, where inspiration and invention are genesis. Rhubarb encourages established artists to take new risks and emerging artists to explore the medium of performance creation in a safe, inspired space. Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is currently seeking submissions of new, original, contemporary theatre, performance and dance for our 31st Rhubarb Festival.

The Rhubarb Festival has acted as a seeding ground for exciting new work from a host of groundbreaking Canadian artists, including Sky Gilbert, Daniel MacIvor, Daniel Brooks, Guillermo Verdecchia, Don McKellar, Diane Flacks, Gavin Crawford, Sonja Mills, Darren O’Donnell, Damien Atkins, Atom Egoyan, Jacob Wren, Ann-Marie MacDonald (and many more). The Toronto Star has called it an “annual tonic of fresh and exciting theatre that invigorates Toronto”.

17. CALL FOR PAPERS: essi Arts + Opinions
Deadline: September 10, 2009; Source: Essi

Theme: Sabotage
Deadline: September 10

Send your text (1,000-2,250 words) to s.babin@esse.ca before September 10, 2009. Please include a short biography (50-80 words), an abstract of the text (100 words), as well as postal and e-mail addresses. We also welcome submissions (reviews, essays, analyses) not connected to a particular theme (deadlines: September 10, January 10 and April 15).

Sabotage
After a year spent focusing on waste, fragility and disappearance, we felt the need to have a look at the art object prior to its obliteration or transformation, to consider instead what accelerated its disintegration, and explore the means and motives behind such practices. In thus seemed appropriate to propose to authors a meditation on the notion of artistic sabotage. In the next themed issue, esse will publish critical analyses of artistic practices that aim to disrupt established systems as well as public order, through self-destruction, contamination, interference or infiltration. Some artists seem to look towards illegality, others choose to undermine their own projects or to interfere in others’, thus producing a value judgment on the artistic quality of a work. There are also those interested in diverting the mechanisms of structured paranoia in our society, in particular camera surveillance systems and social networks that appropriate personal data. Our objective is to better understand non-ethical, illegal practices—sometimes politically inclined, even anarchist—that spread chaos for purely artistic reasons, whose strike force possibly resides in their capacity to critique established discourses and their imitations. esse wishes to highlight the necessity of practices that deliberately act on various systems, including the art world’s, to better show their failings and perhaps even awaken consciousness.

About FADO:
Established in 1993, FADO Performance Inc. (Performance Art Centre) is a not-for-profit artist-run centre for performance art based in Toronto, Canada. FADO exists to provide a stable, ongoing, supportive forum for creating and presenting performance art. Currently, we are the only artist-run centre in English Canada devoted specifically to this form. We present the work of local, national and international artists who have chosen performance art as a primary medium to create and communicate provocative new images and new perspectives. Thanks to the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council and the Department of Canadian Heritage for their on-going support of our endeavors.
