FADO E-LIST (February 2017)Dear FADO friends, It's been a long road, but we're nearly home now. FADO's epic MONOMYTHS series is back for the third and final instalment from February 15 to February 19 at The Theatre Centre and Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. We are excited to experience the final stages of this year-long performance journey, culminating with The Return Home, through the work of Serena Lee (Toronto), claude wittmann (Toronto), Nao Bustamante (USA), Staceyann Chin (USA), and Tanya Mars (Toronto). Some of these events are ticketed and others are by donation at the door. Limited seating at each performance. Two of the events are ASL interpreted, and both venues are fully accessible. Please see INDEX #1–#5 below for information about each project and links to on-line ticket sales. x, fado MONOMYTHS invites a diverse collection of artists, scholars, and activists to revise Joseph Campbell’s conception of the hero’s journey through performance art, lectures, workshops, and other offerings. This new assemblage of non-linear un-narratives proposes a cultural, political and social feminist re-visioning of the world. The MONOMYTHS perception of the universal journey dispels the notion of the lone patriarchal figure on a conquest to vanquish his demons–both inner and outer–in consideration of community, collectivity, and collaboration. Joseph Campbell’s influential book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) prescribes a common pattern to all of the world’s mythic narratives. According to this fundamental structure, the archetypal hero is challenged to embark on a monumental quest. Over the course of the hero’s journey, trials and obstacles must be overcome until a victory is won and the hero returns home with new knowledge about himself and the world. Campbell’s concept of the monomyth (‘one myth’) is a recognizable motif in both ancient mythology and contemporary culture, including film, music, literature, sports, and advertising. A current trend in popular visual culture replaces the male character with a female one, in spite of the fact that our heroine–from the get-go–would make different choices if the conditions, and conditioning, allowed. While each MONOMYTHS stage stands alone, the work of each presenting artist is interdependent and connected. These independent visions, when stitched together through the audience’s collective presence, form an exquisite corpse of a larger experimental narrative. MONOMYTHS STAGE 10: The Road Back FADO Performance Art Centre presents MONOMYTHS Rise and Fall Wednesday, February 15 @ 8pm Tickets: Regular $15 | Student/senior/arts worker $12 Rise and Fall is a performance and collective exercise on the desire for inevitability, on how the return is narrated. A mutant reading group: we will create a model by weighing things–thoughts, images, and otherwise. The first part is called Exposition. The second part is called Development. The third part is called Recapitulation. We will not call it progress. How to describe the movement? ABOUT SERENA LEE +++ 2. MONOMYTHS STAGE 11: Refusal of the Return FADO Performance Art Centre presents MONOMYTHS 2894: Refusal of MONOMYTHs Thursday, February 16 @ 7:00–10:00pm ***This performance is ASL interpreted.*** 2894 by claude wittmann asks participants to read outloud from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's report (TRC report, 2015.) Each participant reads the report to a live streaming radio station with the aid of a cell phone and streaming software provided by the artist. Readers start where the last one left and read as much as they want. Sometimes the readings take place in a specific location, but mostly, participants may read anywhere they choose–in their homes, or in public. Participants read as much or as little as they can. Listeners can similarly be anywhere, listening on any device at any time. The connection of the radio provides a special kind of intimacy between readers and listeners. This project started in April 2016. It is on-going, until the entire report (all 2894 pages) has been read or until the project transforms into something more relevant to social change. 2894 is not a Truth and Reconciliation project. It is a Truth project. It is currently co-managed by claude wittmann and Adam Herst. In 2894: Refusal of MONOMYTHs, claude and Adam facilitate a 3-hour reading session. Audience is invited to attend to listen to readings of the report. Audience is invited to become readers should they wish to. Readers read as much or as little as they choose, to the assembled audience of witnesses. ABOUT CLAUDE WITTMANN +++ 3. MONOMYTHS STAGE 12: Mistress of Two Worlds FADO Performance Art Centre presents MONOMYTHS Silver & Gold Friday, February 17 @ 8pm Sponsored by Images Festival Tickets: Regular $15 | Student/senior/arts worker $12 Silver & Gold combines film, live performance, and original costumes into a hyrbid work that Nao Bustamante proclaims a "filmformance". In this filmformance, Bustamante evokes the muse of legendary filmmaker Jack Smith and his tribute to 1940s Dominican movie starlet Maria Montez in a magical and joyfully twisted exploration of race, glamour, sexuality, and the silver screen. The performance alternates between action and live narration of a film projection. In the film, inspired by iconic underground filmmaker Jack Smith, Bustamante interprets Smith's muse: 1940s Dominican movie starlet Maria Montez. Honing-in on Smith's interest in Hollywood's obsession with filmic reproduction of the exotic, Bustamante embodies Miss Montez. Using video, live voiceover, audience interaction, and the body as a source of backdrop, narrative, and emotion, she takes the spectator on a bizarre and radical journey as she discovers a new bejeweled body part, which is at once her curse and oracle. This performance is the fruit of a commission by the LIVE FILM/ Jack Smith festival, co-organized by Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art and Hebbel-am-Ufer Theater (HAU) in Berlin. FADO Performance Art Centre and the 38th Rhubarb Festival are proud to welcome Staceyann Chin's unique voice back to the stage at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. This is a rare opportunity to experience the powerful and provocative work of Staceyann Chin, an out spoken-word poet and LGBT rights and political activist. Her work has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Pittsburgh Daily; and has been featured on 60 Minutes and The Oprah Winfrey Show. In 2015, she was named by Equality Forum as one of their 31 Icons of the 2015 LGBT History Month. In her performance for MONOMYTHS, Chin weaves excerpts from her 2015 solo performance Motherstruck! with new thoughts and words ruminating on survival and action strategies for living in the current political situation in the USA as an intersectional life-term activist. MONOMYTHS STAGE 14: The Return Home FADO Performance Art Centre presents MONOMYTHS CRONE Sunday, February 19 @ 2:00pm–8:00pm Tickets: $10 donation (tickets at door only) CRONE, the latest durational performance by Tanya Mars looks at how superstition and myth intertwine. In keeping with her recent performance strategy, Mars will create an atmospheric work that combines visually rich layers of spectacular, satirical feminist imagery with light and sound. A revered matriarch of the Canadian performance art community, it is fitting that Mars offers the conclusion to the year-long epic MONOMYTHS journey, illuminating Stage 14: The Return Home. EVENT: Oil Pressure Vibrator by Geumhyung Jeong Oil Pressure Vibrator The Theatre Centre South Korean artist Geumhyung Jeong makes her Toronto debut with her internationally acclaimed piece, "Oil Pressure Vibrator". Running for two nights only, February 1–2, at The Theatre Centre, this is an event not to be missed! Part performance piece, part lecture, this is a show that will challenge your notions of sexuality, technology and the body—not to mention theatre itself. Performer Geumhyung Jeong is a true original, and a true radical. Here she presents a piece about her love affair with an industrial excavator. Yes, you read that right: this is a performance that goes into uncharted waters, exploring sexuality fearlessly and with unabashed intellectualism. The show includes a big-screen visual presentation accompanied by a lecture: the artist describes her quest for autoerotic satisfaction, and how her search culminated in her settling on the construction machine as her object of desire. From there she moves further into her exploration: on the video screen we see documentary footage of Jeong going through training to be an excavator operator, followed by… well, let’s just say things get pretty racy. But for all its shocking eroticism, this is also a contemplative, cerebral show. Jeong wants to shake us up, to make us think, to make us question some of our most basic ideas. Naked State is a 10-day residency to create artworks that explore the nude human body in context of nature, culture and art. For the duration of the residency, the artists and residency Facilitator live as naturists (in the nude) within the naturist community of Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park to create works that explore questions such as: What is nudity? Does stripping away clothing rid us of class, gender, and personal expression?; Do the connections between our bodies and the land change when nude? Is nudity always sexual? What is the role of the nude in historical and contemporary art?; Is an animal with fur naked? Is it possible to be civil in the nude?; Is there a natural state for human being? Residents work individually or collaboratively to create artworks that explore these questions through media of their choice, such as photography, video, installation, drawing, painting, performance art, dance, sound art, media art, etc. Naked State welcomes people in all walks of life into a creative journey of criticality thinking and self-discovery. Indigenous, people with disabilities, people of colour and diverse gender identifications are encouraged to apply.
This programmed residency offers facilitation by Multimedia Artist Teresa Ascencao, a seminar on naturism with Stéphane Deschênes, a creative workshop, guest visits by artists and members of the Bare Oaks naturist community, and plenty of studio time. Critiques of residents’ works occur on a regular basis, individually with the Facilitator and through facilitated group discussions. Artists are encouraged to socialize and integrate with the Bare Oaks community at campfires, swimming, sharing meals, and through the creation of artworks. The Bare Oaks community will be invited to the introductory resident artist talks, guest seminar with Stéphane, and scheduled studio visits with artists (who wish to participate). The closing event will be open to members of Bare Oaks and the public.
Naked State is organized by Arts Unfold, which produces art and design projects in Canadian and European communities to foster greater understandings of social and environmental conditions.
Naturism is the practice of complete nudity in a social setting. Though nudity is the most obvious aspect of naturism, it is simply a tool to reach closer to a natural state. The purpose of naturism is to promote wholesomeness and stability of the human body, mind, and spirit. It also promotes wellbeing through complete contact of the body with the natural elements. Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park is a year-round naturist park near Toronto in Canada, where individuals and families experience traditional naturist values in a modern setting. It is nestled among the natural wilderness of the Ontario Greenbelt and Oak Ridges Moraine. Its varied landscape includes open spaces, forests, ponds, streams and a small lake. Amenities include a store, restaurant, sun deck, TV and sports lounge, outdoor pool, whirlpool, saunas, exercise room, laundromat, and a small common kitchen with microwave and fridge. Wireless Internet can be purchased at the front desk. The Outback common room will be dedicated as a large shared studio space for the duration of the residency. Experimental Action is a three day, innovative International performance art festival happening February 23- 25th of 2017 that will feature a collection of groundbreaking International and non local performance artists along with Houston-based performance artists. Each of the three nights will be hosted at a different downtown Houston venue and will consist of a series of engaging, participatory and experimental Performance Art works. Incoming performance artists will be speaking at area universities and leading workshops during the days. A symposium will be held at the Contemporary Arts Museum on February 25th to facilitate critical dialogue about the work presented. The festival creates a short term community. Through communal housing and meals, local artists and volunteers and incoming artists connect creating cultural exchange, lasting connections and future collaborations. The festival is curated and directed by Julia Claire Wallace and Evan McCarley.

Simla and claude say: “We have been inspired by Marylin Arsem's "Waiting for Sunrise”, which took place Jan 13-14, 2017 in Toronto as a part of FADO Performance Art Centre’s MONOMYTHS series and want to recreate the waiting as a moment of silence by different human beings in the same space between 6 and 9 pm. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Lilith Performance Studio / Major Visual Art Performances Each year, selected artists are given the unique opportunity to realize and present a new large-scale performance on site in the studio in Malmö or elsewhere in the city, in close collaboration with the studio. The invited artists get a great chance to explore their own artistic expression and to work in a larger scale including all aspects in creating a new art work. Lilith selects artists with a distinctively individual artistic mode of expression and integrity when it comes to idea as well as method, artists that also share an interest in exploring their own work in relation to the studio as an experimental site. The artists are encouraged to expand their artistic vision through the use of live performance, resulting in unique productions. During a 4-8 weeks long production period in Malmo the artists are given the opportunity to focus on all the parts of a live piece: site, time, staging, participants and audience. The selected artists to Lilith’s Commission program will receive significant financial and production support to experiment and realize innovative new works, in close collaboration with the studio from conceptualization to presentation. Lilith Commission will include a budget for production, research and development, artist fee, accommodation and travel expenses. Proposals should be new, innovative large-scale works, which respond to the idea of the studio as an experimental site, and the wish to expand the artistic vision. Applicants will be judged on the groundbreaking nature of their idea and its potential for realization. Who can apply?
