Choreography Across Disciplines
A cross-disciplinary thematic residency for artists exploring choreography
With Christopher House and Ame Henderson
Overview
In response to a growing cross-disciplinary interest in choreography, this eight-day thematic residency co-facilitated by Ame Henderson and Christopher House will bring together 12 artists to engage with methods and ideas distilled from contemporary choreographic practice.
Choreography Across Disciplines is for professional artists working in disciplines other than dance who are leaning towards choreographic ideas, and for dance practitioners investigating choreography in dialogue with other art forms. The goal of the residency is to explore how choreographic thinking - spatial, temporal, and sensory - can enhance a diverse range of artistic practices.
What does the program offer?
The residency will be grounded in embodied research, knowledge sharing, and play, enhanced by encounters with a range of somatic and formal approaches and work with scores and improvisation structures. Physical activities will be supported by open discussion, writing, and dialogic walks.
Who should apply?
This program is for professional artists in any medium including visual art, performance, film/video, digital arts, sound arts, music, theatre, writing, and inter-arts who are interested in exploring the potential of choreographic thinking in their practice, and for dance artists working with choreography in relation to, or within, other forms.
Participants must have experience in some physical practice (not necessarily dance-based) and be willing to act as performer/collaborators in the working of their peers; performance-as-choreography is an important aspect of the work.
Applicants should have an established practice with a history of public presentation, and an interest in both learning through the body and collaborating in an intensive group environment. International and Canadian artists are invited to apply.
Adjudication
Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to artistic merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the artist's work will benefit from the program.
Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete.
Note: All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of Banff Centre.

hub14 encourages inventiveness & excellence by granting free & discounted space so that artists may afford more time for process-based & developmental research.
RESIDENCY PROGRAMS:
research hub
We offer up to 40 hours of studio time, free or heavily subsidized. The program offers the opportunity for showings although these are not mandatory. We are looking for ideas at the early stages, which have not been previously work-shopped. Note: a showing is not required but also not discouraged.
launchpad
Geared towards work that is already commissioned or programmed, yet underfunded. We offer up to 40 hours of studio time, free or heavily subsidized. Emerging artists may request an outside eye from our Artistic Director-ship at a subsidized rate. Note: a public/invited showing is required.
live-in
Intended for artists living & working outside of Toronto. Artists are invited to live & create at hub14 for a maximum two-week stay. A minimum of one showing & documentation are required throughout the residency. An interview (Skype or phone) may be required. Note: we convert hub14 to a live-in studio complete with basic necessities (futon/bed, hotplate & fridge, shower, linens & towels, utensils & cookware, some appliances).
community chest
Special initiatives proposed by and/or supporting the community. The idea is to bring a community into hub, or to bring hub into a community. Examples include workshops, performance series, artist discussions, etc. Events must be free or PWYC & encourage inclusiveness of all kinds. Note: hub14 has a small staircase leading to its entry & is therefore, unfortunately, not barrier-free.
gallery series
Proposals for all-access gallery pop-ups of up to 3 days. Our interest here is to support the convergence of visual art/installation/film/photography & performance. Immersive environments fit well into this category. Note: applications may be scheduled as solo exhibitions or a mixed program; this will be determined in context of the proposals reviewed.

The workshop is part of Transart Communication 30’s international performance art train, from 10th-16th July, moving from Budapest-Prague-Krakow-Warsaw-Bratislava.

ABOUT The Workshop
Crossing Borders: Public Space Performances is a workshop, which will focus on the intercultural movement of the Performance train. Marilyn Arsem will facilitate 7 days on and off the train drawing from her rich experience and knowledge as a performance maker and teacher. She will create an explorative and critical space for investigating the impact of performance in public spaces and what role it can play as a multicultural and mobile art form.
ABOUT Marilyn Arsem
Marilyn Arsem has been creating live events since 1975, from solo gallery performances to large-scale, site-specific works. Arsem has presented work in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. She recently completed a 100 day performance at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Many of her works are durational in nature, and minimal in actions and materials. Created in response to the site, they engage with the immediate landscape and materiality of the location, its history, use, or politics. She is a member (and founder) of Mobius, Inc., a Boston-based collaborative of interdisciplinary artists. She taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for 27 years, establishing one of the most extensive programs internationally in visually-based performance art.

4. ANNOUNCEMENT: 2018 ANTI Festival International Prize for Live Art Shortlist

ANTI Festival International Prize for Live Art will be awarded for the 5th time in September 2018 in Kuopio, Finland. The world’s only international award for Live Art is €30,000, making it one of the richest cultural prizes in the arts.
This year, the international prize jury is chaired by one of the most significant and influential philosophers of our time, Jacques Rancière (France). Celebrated for his writing on equality, emancipation, education, aesthetics, art and knowledge, Rancière is a thrilling addition to the 2018 jury, which is completed by Eisa Jocson (Philippines) and Lois Keidan (United Kingdom). Keidan, sitting on the jury for a second year, is co-founder of the London Live Art Development Agency. Renowned Philippines-based artist Eisa Jocson works with choreography investigating the labour, and representations of the dancing body.
Four outstanding contemporary artists/collectives from across the globe are set to compete for the 2018 prize, they are: All The Queens Men (Australia), Nic Green (United Kingdom), Jeanne van Heeswijk (Netherlands) and Sonya Lindfors (Finland). The urgent contributions these celebrated artists make to cultural life share a fascination with the questions of our time, essaying ideas of inclusion, equality, community, diversity, feminism, power and blackness.

ABOUT FADO PERFORMANCE ART CENTRE
Established in 1993, FADO Performance Art Centre is a not-for-profit artist-run centre based in Toronto, Canada. FADO provides a stage and on-going forum in support of the research and development of contemporary performance art practices in Canada and internationally.
