Responding: International Performance Art Festival and Meeting is a brand-new international festival to take place in Japan from September 5–15, 2018. As in the title, it is to respond to current social and environmental issues surrounding us using our body (performance art) as our instruments, followed by a symposium and an experimental platform to create dialogue among communities within both local and global contexts.
The inaugural project: R1 will take place in Tokyo and travel to Fukushima prefecture’s coastal areas where affected by 2011 the Great East Japan Earthquake, and respond to the aftermath infamous situation there is a forgotten present tense living history.

2. EVENT: Unlimited Festival

Unlimited is back for 2018, once again shining a light on extraordinary work by disabled artists. Featuring the British Paraorchestra, writer and comedian Jackie Hagan, sitar master Baluji Shrivastav OBE and many more—dive into dance, performance, comedy, music and art that challenges perceptions and breaks down walls.
The festival has an abundance of free events, plus relaxed performances and BSL-integrated events, so there's even more reason to get involved.
Born out of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Southbank Centre's Unlimited is a biennial festival with further Arts Council funding secured until 2020.
At the heart of the festival is the Unlimited commissions programme delivered by Shape Arts and Artsadmin. Supporting established, emerging and international disabled artists across all artforms, this programme aims to embed work by disabled artists within the cultural sector, reach new audiences and shift perceptions. The programme is funded by Arts Council England, Arts Council of Wales, British Council and Spirit of 2012.

MARTIN O'BRIEN [LONDON, UK]
Martin O'Brien is an artist whose performance work draws upon his experience of suffering from cystic fibrosis. His work is concerned with physical endurance, disgust, long durations and pain based practices in order to address a politics of the sick queer body and examine what it means to be born with a life threatening disease, politically and philosophically. He has performed throughout the UK, the US, Canada and Europe, both solo and in collaboration with the pioneering performance artist Sheree Rose.
MIAO JIAXIN [BROOKLYN, NYC/CHINA]
Beginning in Shanghai, where his photography works expressed the universal theme of urban angst, Miao then immigrated to New York, expanding his view of urban streets towards a more conceptual public stage. Among his performative practices across different media, Miao has blended his naked body into the bleak streets of a midnight New York City, traveled inside a suitcase hauled by his mother through urban crowds, made live-feed erotic performances on an interactive pornographic broadcasting website, and dressed as a Chinese businessman for an entire year when working towards his MFA at School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Her work explores the body in relation to thought formation, the experiential components of sound making, and the process of art /identity making as a first generation american. In my actions I try to build situations based on the interaction between the creator and the recipient. I am interested in controlling the process in the way it should include the recipient in a horizontal relationship with art, which would eliminate the division between creators and recipients. Social changes, and progressing democratization demand art transformation, that goes beyond the format of traditional art categories shaped in the renaissance. Contemporary art has already successfully eradicated the divisions between disciplines but there is still a visible border between the creator and the recipient. Using interaction and participatory practices I aim for moments when the experience of art eludes of conserving the structure of hierarchal divisions.

6. EVENT: International Performance Art Giswil

International Performance Art Giswil was created in 1998 by Ruedi Schill and Monika Günther, specifically for the site of the Turbine Hall at Giswil. The two performance artists working as a couple since 1995 organized 12 Festival editions in all: 1998–2000 and 2005–2013.
In 2014 this founding couple passed the artistic direction on to Andrea Saemann, performance artist and networker from Basel.
The festival is among the activities of the expo Turbine association, an interest group for artists and other art lovers who have been using the turbine hall for cultural purposes since it went out of service in 1994. The association initiates and realizes exhibition projects, and facilitates cultural creation and presentation at the turbine hall in Giswil and elsewhere.

This year, the Rhubarb Festival turns 40 in an ecstatic celebration of the strange and new in performance. Over two weeks of programming over 100 artists will converge on Buddies to create, inspire, and be inspired. Rhubarb seeks to provide artists with the space and support to create new works that are strange, pushing the edges, risky and challenging.
We are currently seeking proposals for our upcoming festival (which will take place from February 13–24, 2019).
Selected projects will be featured during the festival and will receive technical, production, promotional, and artistic support. In addition to an honorarium, festival artists also receive an unlimited artist pass, allowing them to see work for free by local, national, and international artists in our programme.

9. EVENT: Echoes of Shamanism

Echoes of Shamanism is a 3-day event presenting artists who use shamanic practices either in their public performances or as a method for the preparation of their artworks. Artist Nina Boas noticed a recurring use of shamanism in contemporary performance practice. Space will be given on Friday, late afternoon, for artists to explore their different approaches to shamanism in performance. There will also be a lecture by philosopher Fons Elders to contextualize shamanism in performance. A full program of live art will take place on Saturday afternoon, both inside Het Glazen Huis and outside in the park. Sunday is the aftermath, a moment for audience and artists to reflect on their experiences.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Irina Birger (RU/NL)
Born and raised in Moscow, Birger was greatly influenced by Social Realism and ‘imperial’ Stalinist architecture. The monumental arrangements inspired admiration, humility and wonder, similar to the visual impact of sacred formations. As a result, she is strongly interested in the visual strategies and formal principles of different religions, cults and totalitarian regimes, and incorporates them in her work. The Book of Happiness and Sadness, made in 2018, is an example of this.
Jasper Griepink (NL)
Since 2016 Griepink has been rooting his ephemeral and shamanic performance-based practice back into the earth by involving (social) permaculture and community practices into his work. This was followed by durational land-art pieces, such as Grove 2.0 – Chapel of Wild Wisdom, a futuristic druidic greenhouse in a public woodland area. Upon ending various pilgrimages in the tropics he returned to European soils seeking to reanimate and explore local ‘indigenous’ knowledge for the sake of getting at the roots of colonialism and global capitalism. With his recent anti-capitalist and pro-pagan spoken-word piece, Ultra Ecosexual Polyamory.
Kleoni Manoussakis (GR)
Living and traveling in South America, Manoussakis creative practice has been inspired by her work with Shamans from Mexico, Columbia, Peru and Brazil. By bringing the ceremonial process to the fore, her work is inviting the viewer to collective moments of exploration, and to actions that we could also call rituals or prayers that are formed with the use of shamanic and artistic tools.
Dimple B Shah (IN)
Sanctity, Purification, Solitude, Seeing true self, Healing, Rituals, Meditation, Filtration, Catharsis, and Attaining a state of blissfulness make up the central elements of this performance. Shah’s performance is basically about attaining catharsis through various ritual processes. These rituals are of everyday practice in Jain Culture. They are meditative processes through which one slowly enters into a deep state of consciousness and slowly experiences blissfulness. This performance will focus on both one-to-one and community interaction and healing.
A k u z u r u (TT)
A k u z u r u is a performance and trans-disciplinary artist from Trinidad and Tobago. The human and natural world has catalyzed her study of the metaphysics of movement and gesture, the vastness of space, and shamanistic inferences. Mystical nuances are deeply felt through her experimental sounds, concept clothing, tableaux vivants, monumental drawings, and writing. Her productions in the famous multi-layered performance traditions of the Carnivals of Trinidad and Nottinghill, UK, have been vital to her emphasis on processional performance as a profound dynamic art form.
Fons Elders (NL)
Newton’s space-time paradigm severed the umbilical cord between nature and culture. Such a radical divorce never happened before. Quo Vadis? exists of an unbroken material connection between every human alive today and every one of our ancestors – even to the very origin of living matter, to the very first primordial cell. Quo Vadis? implies research about perceptions, realizing that self-liberation can’t be a self-centered issue. Why? The small ‘self’ comes from somewhere and goes somewhere.
ABOUT PAE
Performance Art Event (PAE) is a platform for performance art. An ever-changing structure, currently adapting to the organizers’ artistic development and work. PAE is artists Nina Boas, Martijn Stellinga, and ieke Trinks, who organize events that give priority to visual art practices intended to be experienced live. The first PAE event took place in 2008 in the Wolfart Projectspace in Rotterdam.

Visiting the audience in the present day, Gertrude and Alice come to find out how history has treated them. The couple recounts stories of their 40-year marriage, of meetings with iconic artists and writers, and of Alice’s overwhelming, consuming devotion to Gertrude’s genius. Before they leave, they want to find out what has become of their artistic and cultural influence, and how their lives and work are—or are not—remembered.
One of the most significant and contentious female voices in the 20th century, Gertrude Stein rose to international notoriety with her memoir The Autobiography of Alice B Toklas. She influenced a generation of artists and writers, but her own work remains hotly debated for its controversial and sometimes contradictory statements. Her genius, however, was unquestioned by her partner Alice B Toklas, who dedicated her life to supporting the work of the woman she loved.
Nominated for three Dora Awards and recently published by Playwrights Canada Press, the beloved story of Gertrude and Alice returns to the Buddies stage with a new production design from celebrated visual artist Sherri Hay. As our queer heroes chart their influence and legacy in their own artistic moment, the 21st century art installation in which they find themselves evolves at an almost-imperceptible yet constant pace, creating a stunning visual metaphor for the questions the play explores.

Buddies believes that everyone should be able to see our shows, which is why we’re expanding our Pay What You Can ticket program for our 40th Anniversary Season. Every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday a block of tickets will go on sale at noon for that day’s performance, and you pick the price. Whatever fits your budget, that’s what the ticket costs. Pay What You Can tickets are available until 7:00pm on weekdays and 2:30pm on Sundays, or until they sell out—whichever comes first.
Tickets are generally only available in-person at our box office, and we recommend getting here early for more popular shows as these tickets can sell fast. However, if getting down here in the middle of the day presents a barrier—accessible transportation, childcare, etc.—simply call the box office at 416-975-8555 and we’ll reserve a Pay What You Can ticket for you that you can purchase when you arrive to see the show.

This year’s festival focuses around the theme POST POST POST. New Performance Turku Festival artists have been invited to address different post- and post-post-eras currently surrounding us: post-colonialism, post-humanism and postfeminism.
The festival’s POST POST POST theme comments the big changes and fractures in our current world view. Historically biased and oppressive conceptions towards different groups of people, nations and nature, are slowly–finally–making room for new kinds of thoughts. Is it possible to use performance art and embodied knowledge to explain and to experience the transitional shifts around us?
The project is organized in collaboration with PALS Festival in Stockholm, and PAB Festival in Bergen, and project partners include RAVY Biennale from Cameroon as well as Savvy Contemporary from Berlin.

Brian Patterson and Siobhan Mullen, Transactions II is the first event of its kind on The Greenway, building upon the success of this unique creative exchange.
This exchange, which emphasizes Boston and Belfast’s relationship as sister cities, provides opportunities for artists working at the helm of diverse experimental practices in live performance to learn from each other, share audiences, and work across national and cultural contexts, while building connections through the creation of new works.
This event is supported by a Live Arts Boston grant through the Boston Foundation, travel support from Culture Ireland and the University of Ulster, and support to Bbeyond from the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Based in Boston, Mobius, Inc. (est. 1977) is a non-profit, tax-exempt, artist-run organization, whose mission is to generate, shape and test experimental art. The members of the organization believe an effective strategy for supporting this art is to establish grounds that build relationships among fellow artists. Mobius is committed to structuring contexts that foster projects incorporating a wide range of disciplines. This approach sets in motion situations where the artist's impact can be seen locally, nationally and internationally. Constructing art initiatives outside accepted frameworks and encouraging animated discourse with the public are fundamental to Mobius. At the core of Mobius is the Mobius Artists Group (MAG), who operate as a collaborative of individual working artists, actively committed to creating original, experimental work in different media including but not limited to performance art, installation, film, video, new music, sound art, dance, collaborative and interdisciplinary work. Based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Bbeyond came into being early in 2001. Bbeyond is committed to promoting the practice of performance art and artists in Northern Ireland and further afield. Our aim is to raise people’s consciousness of live/performance art as being integral to the world in and around us, inspiring reflection and enriching lived experience. Bbeyond encourages greater access to and appreciation of this visually based art form, through facilitating modes of active private/public participation, allowing people from all sectors of society, not just the traditional arts, to experience and enjoy performance art directly. “Bbeyond” has the potential to become a directional force towards a lived philosophy of being, that continues long after the framing of any specific performance has ended, becoming the real transitioning and transforming energy in the life consciousness of the practitioner, to literally "be beyond."

In 1998, an international meeting was held in Quebec City, the purpose of which was to recount the action art of the past twenty years by critically reviewing the sixties and seventies. From this meeting came the book entitled Art Action 1958-1998, a review of the discussions conducted by historical and current protagonists of these art forms in action and covering four decades of artistic practices in action.Twenty years after holding this pivotal meeting, the 2018 RiAP proposes to hold an equivalent meeting covering the worldwide evolution of action art practices from 1998 to 2018, always with a view to producing subsequently a book describing research and observations of our many collaborators.

ANTI Festival starts in a month - Celebrated live artists come together in Kuopio, Finland
ANTI - Contemporary Art Festival 2018 is getting closer and we enjoy the festival opening after a month exactly, on 25th September. Internationally celebrated, award-winning artists from around the world will present projects engaged with ideas of play, playfulness, games and gaming.
A playful engagement with the spaces of Kuopio, ANTI Festival’s host city, has been at the heart of our approach to bringing vital, exciting and surprising contemporary art to this inquisitive community. For 2018 we’re focusing our attentions properly on play and gaming.
On 29th September, we will award ANTI Festival International Prize for Live Art, one of world’s most exciting cultural prizes. We’ll also host the third Future DiverCities Lab in Kuopio between 21st and 27th September.

This year we celebrate our 21st year with a roster of 21 amazing artists packed into 6 intensive days of activities.
This year's highlights include progressive and provocative works that give voice to beauty, humour, perseverance and intimacy in the face of human struggle. From the mystery of shadow puppets to the delicacy of private, one-on-one interactions; from spectacular eruptions of queer, dissenting and displaced identities to the epic glory of the everyday made strange; from thoughtful probings of place and history to the joyful and challenging maneuvers of forging new visions of community.
In this iteration of the festival, we are proud to present artists from Toronto and Hamilton, from Plains Cree and Tahltan territories, from Chicago and Montreal. Vancouver and Calgary. From Indonesia, Mexico and Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Poland, USA, and Sweden. There are artists from the African and Japanese diasporas, and artists who cross the boundaries of genders and of different abilities. This matters because in their work we can find a singular sense of what it means to be embodied.
Alongside performance projects happening throughout the afternoons and evenings, we have our traditional Performance Art Daily talks featuring this year's Éminence Grises Sandra Vida and Hank Bull, as well as dialogues among visiting artists.

A Series of international Video Performances

Artists’ Association MUU invites artists to participate in Performance Voyage 8, a collection of video performances, and to explore the passion of the LGBT+ community, existing regardless of historical times, geographical location, political system or tradition, universally longing for acceptance and acknowledgement.
The relentless battle for human rights has survived violence and persecution, and the impetuous passion has broken the silence, but is it enough? PV8 open call mainly focuses on LGBT+ but invites all artists. The open call for the Performance Voyage 8 selection is for recent video works, preferably 1–5 minutes in duration (max. 10 min.). Only submit edited footage—unedited raw footage will be rejected.
The videos will be showcased as a compilation on a worldwide tour in screening events. The compilation will be presented worldwide in 2019. Note: no videos will be installed or exhibited separately during the tour. The jury will be announced later.

Each submission must include the name of the artist, the title of the performance, the duration of the video and, where appropriate, also information about where, how and when the original performance took place. Established in 1993, FADO Performance Art Centre is a not-for-profit artist-run centre based in Toronto, Canada.
