1. Fado presents GAME - CITY
August 28, 2004, 11 am - 11 pm at various downtown locations

GAME - CITY
Coordinated by Craig Leonard
Featuring Charlie Black, Paige Gratland, The Grey Sweatsuit Revolution, Charlene Lau, The Pauls (and the Band of Outsiders), 640 480 Video Collective, SR Palm, Jessica Thompson
Saturday August 28, 2004, 11 am- 11 pm

a 1- day psychogeographic event

Fado is proud to present GAME-CITY, the latest installment in our ongoing Emerging Artists series.

GAME-CITY is a series of urban experiments across Yorkville, Kensington Market and Queen St. by Jessica Thompson, Paige Gratland, Charlene Lau, SR Palm, and the Grey Sweatsuit Revolution, culminating with performances by Charlie Black, 640 480 Video Collective and the Pauls and the Band of Outsiders.

These artists disrupt conventions by disorienting visual, spatial and auditory perceptions. Expect a range of approaches, from the subtle (Thompson, Gratland, Grey Sweatsuit Revolution), to the theatrical (Lau, SR Palm Black, 640 480 and the Pauls). The audience is encouraged to be as nomadic as the projects themselves as they move through the city. Various times and locations are indicated on the schedule, allowing audience members to take in individual projects, or spend their whole day with the works as they link up with each other.

The Emerging Artists series was initiated by Fado in 2002 as a way of highlighting the work of new and emerging artists. Previous projects have highlighted the work of artists based in Toronto, Kingston and Regina. This series selected and coordinated by emerging artist Craig Leonard, features performances and interventions by local artists using a variety of media.

About the Artists

Craig Leonard recently published a collection of works by Odette Vioget and a dictionary of Obsolete Concepts.

Charlie Black is a Toronto-based painter who has been exploring the possibilities of performance art. He graduated from the University of Toronto’s Visual Studies programme in 2004 and is currently working and living ...

Paige Gratland lives in Toronto and makes work in video, performance and fabrics. Previous performance projects include Free Dance Lessons: a renegade dance troupe which takes the chance to ask the world to dance; and Tit Pin: a performance production line which produces participants’ tits on a 3-inch pin. She also sings with the Hank Collective and is one part of the dance sensation Raige and Payne.

Simon Wilkinson and Jeremy Steward are the creators of The Grey Sweatsuit Revolution. Simon is a local graphic designer and artist. He has done very little with his life other than working at the AGO and wearing a grey sweatsuit for an extended period of time. Jeremy is a Toronto-based designer/artist. He gravitates toward highly laborious projects that tend to deal with intensely uncool subject matter (sweatsuits, landscape art, etc.). His current work includes a Roger Dean – inspired conceptual stage design and a kinetic sculpture design for the Banff National Park. He is in the early stages of a 20 year long book design/research project that aims not only to make landscape art cool again, but also to celebrate and explore Canada’s natural beauty and history.

Charlene Lau is a recent graduate of the Visual Studies and Fine Art History programmes at the University of Toronto. Her work has been seen in exhibitions at Mass MoCA, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Koffler Gallery in Toronto, and eyelevelgallery in Halifax.

Pauls and the Band of Outsiders are a non-profit organization fueled by subtitled VHS and dead-end jobs. Immigrants in their own city, singing love and death. Pauls or Nothing the verdict with a cap gun from the dollar store aimed at their own dreamy heads.

The 640 480 (six-forth four-eighty) Video Collective was conceived in 2001 as a platform for creating and curating new collaborative video and installation works that aim to expand the boundaries of an increasingly relevant medium.

SR Palm is made very nervous by performance art. However, she has been filled with anxiety her entire life, so this comes as no surprise. Anxiety is often a theme in her work, along with childhood, sexuality, and gender. SR Palm often utilized repetitive actions and dialogue.

Jessica Thompson is a Toronto-based artist whose practice involves the exploration of the urban environment through sound. Her projects have been shown in Toronto, Chicago ad New York.

The 10th congress will be the first on the Asian continent and we are
looking forward to making contacts with the many Asian artists who will be attending. This will broaden our network and our understanding of ourselves.

One of the congress' concepts is to explore communication and to organize an exhibition, which grows with its own dynamic. The main point of reference during the congress is The Works by the participating artists. They will be documented in a catalogue and in a video that will be prepared on site. At the end of the congress, each artist will be receive a CD-Rom catalogue.

What we offer / What you get:
We would like to emphasize that the congress is meant to be a 'Congress' in the true sense of the word. Our main goal is to create a space where international artists come together, exchange their ideas in a non-commercial environment, and grow together, preserving the character of the congress as a meeting place and a forum for exchange.

Participants:
Our invitation is an organic process. It goes out to all artists who have participated in a Gallery SOTODO event over the past eighteen years. New participants for the congress are possible through the recommendation of artists who have already participated. This is not a difficult process. The network is large. If you do not know anyone in Gallery SoToDo but still wish to participate, contact KIM Hyun-Sook at parasolhs@yahoo.fr and make a special request.

Apropos Money:
Because of our limited budget, we are not in the position to pay an honorary fee to the artists or pay for your travel. However, it will be our responsibility to make your stay and comfortable as possible. This and the catalogue are our traditional ways of saying thank you.

You will receive:
When desired, artists traveling to Seoul are guaranteed lodging for three nights. Accommodations will be at a Korean artist's home or hotel.
Your meals (Lunch and Supper) during the days of Congress.
Catalogue CD-Rom.

Now you can start:
If you would like to participate, please make your wish known.
Those who respond first will be the first to be served.
The most important thing is to send us. parasolhs@yahoo.fr ( KIM Hyun Sook)
Your Name
Your Nationality
Your Address
Your e-mail
When you would like to perform.(When you will be in Seoul).
If you would like to take an active role in the podium discussions.(see below)

In the meantime please prepare the following material: as JPG:
A personal photo of yourself. A snapshot is fine.
A current resumé or statement about your work No more than one page please.
Please check your spelling.
A lay-out of one side of a 8.5 x 11 (American) or A4 (European) piece of paper that will look good reproduced in black and white on a copy machine.
This lay-out can take any form and will be used without alteration so long as it meets the size requirements. These three items will be used for the catalog that we will be prepared during the congress and given or sent to the artists upon completion.
Once we are aware of your intent to participate in the 10th congress, we will send you an official invitation. It will look very much like this one but it will have your name written on it. We have noticed in the past that this invitation works well in receiving money for travel from local art ministries or government embassies. If you have not done it before, you might want to give it a try. It does work.

PODIUM DISCUSSION (conference, forum, debate)
A podium discussion is planned for each day of the congress during the salon hours: 13:00 - 18:00. The main discussion points will center around - 'The Status of Performance Art in Contemporary Art'. 4. CALL FOR PAPERS: "Utopia and Dystopia" esse #53 (Montréal)
Deadline: September 15, 2004; Source: esse arts + opinions

(français suivant)

Number 53: (Future) Utopia and Dystopia. Future visions by artists and theoreticians alike – In the perfect and imperfect future...

In the last of the trilogy of issues devoted to our 20th anniversary, esse magazine is proposing to explore imaginary spaces. Via the of theme Utopia/Dystopia, this edition will attempt to capture the future questions and concerns which have yet to descend upon the social realm and the artistic milieu.

Coined by Tomas More, the term itself – proposing " a better republic " on the new island of Utopia – will provide the point of departure for this upcoming issue.

Science-fiction, reflections on community, active citizenry, architecture and urbanization, sexuality, ethics and bio-ethics, psychology and technology will all be called upon to address the upheavals and conditions afflicting and affecting the world as we understand it today.

Submissions can be sent to <mailto:revue@esse.ca> revue@esse.ca or to <mailto:s.babin@s.babin> s.babin@s.babin . Deadline : September 15, 2004.
All other proposal (critics, essay, analyses) are also welcome

5. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: The City of Mississauga and the Art Gallery of Mississauga
Deadline: September 17, 2004; Source: Akimbo

The City of Mississauga has recently expanded and renovated four community centres in our City as well as a Branch Library. Art will be an important component of these newly rejuvenated facilities. In an effort to involve the communities that utilize these centres in these proposed community based art projects we are seeking artists with special vision to create and oversee the implementation of five separate initiatives.

The particular themes will be established by each centre and will be relevant to neighbourhood interests or issues.

The artist will develop a project specific to the theme and the individual community space that will require the community to be involved with the realization of the artwork.

Specific space information and the type of activity that each centre provides are available by accessing <http://www.mississauga.ca/recreationandparks>www.mississauga.ca/recreationandparks

This letter is a call for interest to artists whom feel they have the vision and ability to work collaboratively to realize these dynamic community based art ventures.

If you would like to make a submission please send a proposal to The City of Mississauga, Parks and Recreation, Arts Unit, Attention Beth Gignac, 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga, Ontario, L5B 3C1 by Friday, September 17, 2004 at 4 pm.

Your proposal should include;

- a statement of interest (why you want to be involved in the project and what skills you have that would make you good selection)
- a biography including education, exhibitions, past commissions, collections in which your work is represented and other community projects you have been involved with.
- 20 slides of past work including any previously commissioned work; or a CD with images of your artwork.

These programs are the first of what we hope will be many public art projects for the City of Mississauga. Although all the details have not yet been worked out we anticipate that these collaborations will result in increased community understanding of the artistic process and the opportunity for neighbourhoods to have direct involvement in the construction of artworks for their community centres. Each project will pay an artist?s fee of $5000 and the materials required for fabrication will be supplied by the donations.

We will be arranging information sessions to discuss each of the projects in detail, to meet with the community groups and to visit the participating centres.

6. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: "Digital Artist-in-residence" Center for Advanced Media (USA)
Deadline: October 1, 2004; Source: Jillian Mcdonald

The Pace Digital Gallery and The Center for Advanced Media (CAM) is pleased to offer an artist's residency beginning Spring 2005. This is a pilot program. We are offering a digital artist the opportunity to work with CAM's resources to produce a new artwork.

The Center for Advanced Media (CAM) Is a collaborative research environment located in Pace University's School of Computer Science and Information Systems in downtown New York City. Its goal is to develop computer-oriented, human-centered systems that help people solve problems by transforming the way they experience the world and the way they collaborate within it. CAM is founded on Pace University's collective faculty experiences in software engineering, human-computer interaction, information visualization, and computer graphics. These computing fields are fundamentally human-centric, with design as the common approach to complex representational problems. Because visual artists, musicians, and writers possess different perceptual, design, and representational skills, CAM is interested in augmenting its computer science foundations with participants who work in the arts and humanities to broaden the research and educational mix.

The Pace University’s Digital Gallery is an outgrowth of CAM's conceptual foundation, executed as the combined initiative between CAM and Fine Arts Department. Its goal is to foster the creation and understanding of digital art for the benefit of Pace University and the surrounding community. It furthers Pace University’s commitment to educational excellence, diversity, and civic involvement by exhibiting curated work of leading digital artists, as well as the work of Pace faculty and students. It sponsors lectures and symposia on digital art, and supports publication of materials for its documentation and promotion.

The Digital Gallery’s first show entitled Digital Downtown opened to rave reviews in Spring 2003. Since then it has co-hosted a Pan-American collaborative performance event titled Accélerateur, and an installation of video works entitled Screen Kiss. Its current online exhibition eBay: Buy or Sell or Buy, will run through September 2004. An evening of artists' talks was organized and catalogue issued in conjunction with the eBay exhibition.

Residency
The artist-in-residence will have the opportunity to work with CAM faculty and students whose research includes computer graphics, virtual reality, image processing, human-computer interaction, and collaborative computing. This work is supported by technology that includes a virtual reality display system, networked PCs, multi-display and plasma display systems, projectors, video cameras, scanners, etc.

The artist-in-residence will be expected to produce a new artwork during their tenure at Pace (January 30 - May 10, 2005), which will remain the property of the artist. Pace Digital Gallery will produce, with the artist, a printed brochure about the work completed in residence, and will expect the artist to give a presentation of their work to the Pace Community and the general public. Pace Digital Gallery will also feature the artist on our website, and in gallery space at Pace University. There will be a modest stipend, but no living accommodations are provided. Access to equipment will be Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 6:00PM, and Saturday from 8:00AM to 3:00PM.

Pace University affirms its commitment to the principle of equal Career Opportunities as stated in Federal, State, and local laws, which prohibits discrimination because of sex, race, age, ethnicity, marital or domestic partnership status, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, disability or veteran.

Artists will be chosen by a jury comprised of the gallery directors, as well as a local artist and curator.

M:ST (Mountain Standard Time) is a biennial performative art festival that brings together a wide range of local, national and international artists from all experience levels, backgrounds and performative disciplines.

The festival fosters discourse crucial for the growth and progression of the performative arts and an important inter-regional and international dialogue through panel discussions, workshops and dissemination activities. M:ST is supported by the collaborative efforts of the nine local arts organizations involved in its development as well as through broader networks nationally and internationally.

M:ST strives to program diverse, entertaining and thought provoking performative works. The term performative" is used to describe practices that originate from a visual or media arts discourse and involve the presence of the artist. These often incorporate sound, video, film, spoken word, or live web streaming. M:ST nurtures a performance-related discourse in Southern Alberta through workshops, panel discussions and artists talks. The festival recognizes the exceptional quality of performative art in this region while also promoting Southern Alberta as an important international art centre.

M:ST is a collaborative endeavour between nine Southern Alberta area arts organizations: The New Gallery (TNG), Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF), EMMEDIA, the Nickle Arts Museum, Stride Gallery, Truck Gallery, The Walter Phillips Gallery and the Alberta College of Art & Design Media Arts and Digital Technologies Program (MADT) and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG).

The curatorial focus is Ceremony. In an era where expressions of
spirituality are being perceived as acts of resistance, I am interested
how ceremony has taken on new meanings in our lives. Exploring
repetitive to mundane to the incredibly symbolic ceremonial activities
that individuals may actively participate in will be examined. What
function does ceremony serve in our lives; does it provide a centering,
or an anchor - or does it serve a larger role that unites individuals
and expresses individuality?

Artists will be selected based on how their work and/or practice
explores ideas that are relevant to the curatorial theme of ceremony.

Visualeyez is the only annual performance art festival in Canada,
produced by Latitude 53 and founded and curated by Todd Janes, this ten
day event offers exceptional programs for audiences and intimate
residency settings for artists. Complete with panel discussions, round
table talks, interactive performances and time-based programming,
Visualeyez sets a new mark for critical discourse about contemporary
performance art practices in Canada and beyond.

The deadline is 18 October 2004 (postmarked) and the proposal should
include:

A detailed project description of the work to be presented;
Artist statement and relevance to the curatorial theme;
Curriculum vitae;
Documentation of previous or proposed work (slides, vhs,dvd, jpegs, mini dvd);

10. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: "Performing Heritage: Contemporary Indigenous and Community-Based
Practices" (Brazil)
Deadline: November 15, 2004; Source: The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics

The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics
invites you to propose performances, papers, performance-based scholarship (scholarship that attempts to enact what it describes), videos, installations, visual arts, Work Group topics, activist projects, hacktivist or virtual actions, and other forms that bring together performance and politics in the Americas to participate in our upcoming

5th Encuentro
Performing Heritage: Contemporary Indigenous and Community-Based Practices
co-sponsored with the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)
in Belo Horizonte, Brazil
March 11-20, 2005

Since 2000, our Encuentros have been a meeting place for artists, scholars, students, and activists investigating the relation between performance and politics in the Americas. Gathering roughly 300 participants, each Encuentro is part academic conference, part performance festival, part workshop series, and wholly interdisciplinary: it is a concentrated space of experimentation, dialogue, and collaboration, featuring lectures, performances, installations, roundtable discussions, exhibits, video screenings, work groups, and hands-on performance workshops. This next Encuentro on Performing Heritage will explore the production and circulation of notions of identity, traditions, authenticity, rights, cultural access and ownership in the age of globalization. These issues will be clustered under three large umbrella topics that will conceptually frame the keynotes, roundtables, performances, and work groups: 1) Intangible Heritage (the many embodied practices that define a sense of communal or national identity); 2) Cultural Agency (the many ways in which the arts make an intervention in social/political life), and 3) Arts and Markets (the circulation of arts through mass media, scholarship, government venues, etcÖ). We will take our lead from major Native intellectuals, artists, activists, and community organizers to think of the ways in which communities in the Americas use embodied practice to make political and cultural claims.

Call for Performance/Installations/Visual Arts/Video:

We want this Encuentro to be as intellectually challenging, artistically exciting, and politically engaging as possible, so we encourage all contemporary artists (especially Indigenous/Native American/First Peoples, as well as artists working with community groups) to send in proposals related to this yearís theme of Performing Heritage: Contemporary Indigenous and Community-Based Practices. At this stage, we are seeking groups or solo artists (theater/music/dance/performance art, etc.) for all areas of our performance program: Feature-length (2 hours or less), Short (30 minutes or less), and Cabaret/Bar interventions (could be improvised), for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Weíre calling for a wide range of performances, from traditional representations to hybrid and contestatory practices. Weíll also select several installations and visual arts exhibits to present during the Encuentro, and weíll be screening videos by indigenous filmmakers throughout the event. Those interested should submit proposals as indicated below no later than November 15, 2004. **Please note that these materials cannot be returned to you**.

Call for Work Group Papers:

Our Work Groups emerged as an alternative to traditional academic panels, as a space for in-depth exploration of a specific topic related to the Encuentro theme. Instead of getting together for a panel and presenting individual papers, members of each Work Group communicate with each other before the event through our online Forums, post their papers online for their colleagues to read, comment on each otherís work, and use their time together at the Encuentro to approach the Group topic through discussions and/or alternative performative methods. Each Work Group then has the opportunity to present/perform their group's collaborative work during the Work Group Presentation sessions held at the end of the Encuentro. These sessions will be documented and will become part of the Hemispheric Institute's archive.

We are calling for Work Group papers related to the theme of Performing Heritage: Contemporary Indigenous and Community-Based Practices. Papers should be a maximum of 8-10 pages in length and must relate to the Encuentro's Work Group topics (please see topics below). Additional work group topics may be added as long as space allows. For instructions on how to propose an additional Work Group, please see the application form. Please note that papers will not be read aloud during the work group meetings, and you donít have to submit a paper in order to join a Work Group. All are welcome to participate in their Group of choice!

Preliminary Work Group Topics (others to be added):
- Intangible Heritage
- Cultural Agency
- Arts & Markets
- Indigenous Identities & Communication
- Representation & Self-Representation
- Transnational/translocal gender politics in performance
- Inter-ethnic coalitions
- Queer grassroots performance
- Afro-American performance
- Performing social class
- Grass-roots appropiations of new media technologies

Work Group Paper Submission Instructions:

Those interested should submit a one-page work group paper abstract, along with a completed application form, a CV or resume, and a brief letter of interest by November 15, 2004.

Papers may be submitted in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. If accepted, the paper and a translated abstract (translated into one of the other two official encuentro languages) must be submitted by no later than January 15, 2003.

Send Papers and Abstracts in Translation to: <mailto:hemi.encuentro@nyu.edu>hemi.encuentro@nyu.edu
Late papers and abstracts will not be accepted.

Application for All Participants:

Participants will be chosen by application. An effort will be made to ensure representation from the different constituencies served by the Institute: students, artists, scholars and activists at different stages of their careers, and from different parts of the Americas (we have usually had strong Latin American representation but this year want to bring in more colleagues from Canada and the US to join us in exploring this topic). Application to the program will consist of a completed application form, a detailed 1-page letter of intent, explaining the applicant's interest in the Encuentro, and a curriculum vitae or resume. Additional materials are required for paper and performance/installation/visual arts/video applicants; please see below for exact specifications. Some knowledge of English, Portuguese or Spanish is a requirement of participation. Once applicants have been accepted to participate, there will be a non-refundable registration fee, as follows:

Professors/Professionals based in Latin America: $150
Students currently enrolled in a university in Latin America: $100
Professors/Professionals based in US/Canada/Europe: $350
Students currently enrolled in a university in US/Canada/Europe: $300
(Featured invited artists will make individual arrangements with the Institute)

Due to the Institute's limited resources, participants are strongly encouraged to seek and secure funding from their institutions or other outside sources. We have several small fellowships available for participants who don't have access to any institutional funding. Please note that financial assistance petitions must be made during the application process; petitions will not be considered after you've submitted your application. To request financial assistance, please fill out the financial aid section of the conference application.

12. SEARCH FOR GRADUATE TEACHER: "Performance and Conquest " (USA)
Deadline: not indicated; Source: Raquel Chapa

The Hemispheric Institute at NYU http://hemi.nyu.edu/ is looking for someone to team teach a course called Performance and Conquest for Spring 2005. Latin America is covered and it looks like the US is too, but they are looking for someone from Canada to participate.

Here is a little more information

The Hemispheric Annual Course involves the co-teaching of a graduate level, interdisciplinary course (taught in 4 countries in 3 languages and at 6 institutions) that focuses on the 'performance' (as embodied action) as both object and mode of analysis. Faculty from six participating institutions co-develop the courses, and each teach it at their home institutions in a regular weekly seminar. Each of the participating faculty members lead 'workgroups' through the web in which members from any of the institutions can participate, and students are responsible for a collaborative project at the end of the semester. The current course is Performance and Conquest, which offers a comparative analysis of the role performance in the conquest of the Americas, focusing primarily on what are now Mexico, Brazil, Peru and the United States.

During the annual Encuentro, students from the various institutions/countries meet to discuss the work they did together online. The annual web-based course allows students at member institutions to study the subject in depth, and enables us to make and locate key texts in that area, all available as part of the Institute's web-based archive. At present, participating institutions in the web course are: the Department of Performance Studies at New York University; the School of Drama at the University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and the Department of Communications at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima, the Centro Regional de Investigaciones Multidisciplinarias (CRIM) at the Unversidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, and Yale University, and Trinity College in the United States.

If you are interested or know anyone who is please contact me or Diana Taylor diana.taylor@nyu.edu. Here is a little information on the Annual courses.

Annual Course

Course Concept: One of the central goals of the Institute is to create "new" knowledge and to inform new ways of thinking about knowledge. There are several challenges. First, limited access to academic materials in general impedes scholarly research in much of Latin America. Our courses and archive try to make these materials available. Second, performances function as vital acts of transfer, transmitting social knowledge. Third, the hope that globalization would prove a democratizing and 'equalizing' force in global information services has paled as globalization re-creates many of the inequalities that have long characterized relations in the Americas. In our limited way, we contest current models of long distance learning (those creating a product that will be consumed by 'clients' in other countries) by developing a collaborative, interactive, multi-sited web-based project that allows scholars, activists and artists and students the opportunity and the means of learning from and contributing to a shared archive.

The concept of the course speaks to these concerns. How to these systems--the written, the performed, the digital--work together in the transmission of knowledge? What happens to the knowledge and social memory of minoritarian communities when only 'book knowledge', accessible to the few is deemed legitimate? Can digital technologies help us span the divide between the high-tech 'haves', and the low-tech, no-tech 'have-nots' as we work together to expand our artistic and cultural/academic 'archives'? Can they span the 'live' embodied knowledge associated with performance and the more durable knowledge of the written archive?

The Institute has developed its areas of research and collaboration following a chronological/thematic sequence: Conquest, Colonialism, Nationalism, and Globalization. These themes are unifying topics in a historical trajectory, as well as the trajectory of social and political life in the Americas in the last five centuries.
