physics changes into a psyche through a succession of facts

the psyche of memory

TORONTO, Canada ... On Monday, March 14, Fado is pleased to present an evening featuring visiting Polish artist Artur Tajber at Gallery 1313. The artist will present a TORONTO TABLEALBE, a new work in his ongoing WALK'MAN series as well as screening videos and talking about his work.

Tajber says of his work:

"My interests are focused around what can be defined as shaping the environment by an individual and collective. ... I think that ‘physical space’ is a reflection of state of soul; physics and psyche influence each other. ...
"Thus my work consists mainly in carrying out observation, constructing experiences, documenting them, and finally – presenting my observations and conclusions to others...."

He has also written about the genesis and development of the WALK'MAN series:

"From 1995 I have worked on a subject matter for which I coined the phrase WALK’MAN – a street action. ... In the autumn of 1995 I was standing on the Lagan River Bridge in Belfast. Hundreds of thousands singing birds were circling over and over again on all levels and all possible planes, drawing in the sky simple (shape-wise), but extremely complex (structurally) forms.
"Since then I have walked along the streets in different cities with an altered attitude. ... I do not perceive a street-plan as a flat sheet of paper, but as a three-dimensional form in which time is the third factor, offering other passages and modifications of connection. ...
"I have no doubt that the most frequently repeated and important activity, which engages my body and mind to a similar extent, is walking – especially walking 'freely', without aiming anywhere specific (I do not 'walk towards...', but I walk, hang about)."

About the artist

Artur Tajber is an influential artist, curator and organizer based in Krakow, Poland, Tajber's work reflects an interest in conceptual design and theory of art, unrestricted by disciplinary divisions. His distinguished exhibition and teaching careers have taken him to galleries, festivals and colleges in Europe, Asia and North America. He is a co-founder and the long-time President of the Association of Fort Sztuki (since 1996), as well as being the instigator and director of the Inter-Faculty Studio for Intermedia, Academy of Fine Arts, Krakow (since 2001).

5. CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS (PRINT): Journal of Aesthetics and Protest (USA)
Deadline: March 15, 2005; Source: Franklin Furnace

The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest is looking to promote actions, images, projects, and ideas that thrive in spaces of refusal by embodying alternative ways of being.

A function of art is to shape consciousness- a truth embodied demands reality structure itself around it. The Fascists' Agenda will not win because it cannot erase all un-conforming bodies. Images of refusal expand collective ideas of truth and possibility.

O' heretic- what discoveries have you made? Perform your difference, our otherness. You experience the sublime in places other than death. We want your living gay agenda. Show us how you don't need their foreign oil. Illustrate your day-to-day diet for a new america. We want to see the means by which you live otherwise.

The truths we live refute the notion that George Bush''s own God created the universe for him to run. While they believe.... -endless war creates freedom -the goals of global capitalism should dictate social policy -love is only between a man and a woman -resource depletion and waste are the driving forces of a functioning economy ... we know otherwise.

If it is a culture war they want then shall we fight!

SPECIFICATIONS.

All media, actions and performances will be considered.

Contributions will be published online or in our pocket sized book (ideally fitting on one or two pages). Please consider these formats with your submission.

7. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: "Lakeside" Toronto Environmental Alliance (Toronto)
Deadline: March 31, 2005; Source: Gallery 1313

Lakeside: Art Looks at Toronto Beaches

Co-curated by David Liss (Director of the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art), Phil Anderson (Director of Gallery 1313), Elaine Whittaker (visual artist), and Shelley Petrie (Executive Director of the Toronto Environmental Alliance).

Gallery 1313 and the Toronto Environmental Alliance are collaborating on a curated art exhibit. We are interested in presenting an exhibit that examines and explores the impact of Toronto's beaches on its community. Over the past century local beaches have transformed from being a hub of community life to polluted spaces, empty and cut off by major roads. Some of our original beaches have even been closed. But things are about to change. This summer a number of Toronto's beaches will be flying the Blue Flag, an internationally recognized eco-label awarded to beaches that achieve high standards in areas such as water quality and safety. We invite artists to submit work that regards any aspect of experiencing Toronto's beaches, from fun at the beach to dismay at the pollution.

The exhibit will run from July 6th to 24th, at Gallery 1313, with the possibility of touring to other locations. Your submission should include the following:

- One page project description.
- One page artist statement.
- C.V.
- Support material: max. 10 slides or CD. You may submit VHS/ DVD if work is time based.
- Slide list (title, medium, size and date)
- SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope). Please ensure correct postage.

All media, including performance, will be considered. Do not send original slides, artwork or master tapes. Proposals for new work to be created will be considered.

Deadline is March 31st (postmarked).

Successful submissions will be contacted at end of April. CARFAC fees apply.

10. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art (USA)
Deadline: April 1, 2005; Source: Franklin Furnace

http://www.franklinfurnace.org

THE FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND FOR PERFORMANCE ART 2005-2006

Supported by Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts, Franklin Furnace awards grants between $2,000 and $5,000 to performance artists, allowing them to produce major works in New York. Artists from all areas of the world are invited to apply.

THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT 2006
Franklin Furnace offers artists an honorarium and a residency facilitated by Franklin Furnace, for a 2-4 month duration at a physical or online venue appropriate to your proposed work. Artists who are interested in developing "live art on the Internet" and engaging the Internet as an art medium and/or venue are encouraged to apply.

Franklin Furnace has no curator; each year a new panel of artists reviews all proposals. We believe that this peer panel system allows all kinds of artists from all over the world an equal shot at presenting their work. All applicants are automatically considered for both categories of awards. Every year the panel changes, as the definitions of "emerging artist," "performance art" and "live art on the Internet" change, so if at first you don't succeed, try again.

Since its inception in 1985 THE FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND FOR PERFORMANCE ART has boosted the careers of such emerging artists as Tanya Barfield, Patty Chang, Papo Colo, Brody Condon, Karen Finley, John Fleck, Murray Hill, Holly Hughes, Mouchette, Pamela Sneed, Jack Waters, Cathy Weis, and Ricardo Miranda Zuñiga.

This year's esteemed selection panel consisted of artists Zhang Ga, Julia Heyward, Yael Kanarek, James Scruggs and Juana Valdes. 14. CALL FOR ARTICLES: The Senses & Society (UK)
Deadline: Not indicated; Source: Franklin Furnace

THE SENSES & SOCIETY, new journal from Berg
Editors: Paul Gilroy, David Howes, Douglas Kahn

Should you have an article you would like to submit, please write to Michael Bull, managing editor, at The Senses & Society, Department of Media & Film Studies, University of Sussex, Brighton, Sussex, BN1 9QQ UK
m.bull@sussex.ac.uk

A heightened interest in the role of the senses in society is sweeping the social sciences, supplanting older paradigms and challenging conventional theories of representation. The senses mediate between mind and body, idea and object, self and society. The senses are gendered, racialized and classed. The senses are also increasingly technologized and commercialized across a range of industries (e.g. design, marketing) - all of which make use of the subtle yet profound impact sensory stimuli have on social behavior. Simply put, sensation is fundamental to our experience, yet is often overlooked as a site for cultural analysis.

Addressing all of the above, this path-breaking new journal provides an antidote to the verbo- and ocular-centrism of conventional social scientific accounts of meaning and human agency. It also problematizes the increasingly homogenized notion of 'the body' by highlighting the multiple forms of human sensuousness. The Senses & Society creates a forum for examining the varieties of sensory experience that exist in contemporary society, and promotes research on the cultural, political and aesthetic dimensions of sensory expression and communication.
