On October 8, 2005, Fado Performance Inc. presents Egalitarian, a new work by Louise Liliefeldt, one of Toronto's premiere performance artists. This work is the first in a major new cycle of performances by the artist entitled "DEADICATIONS: A Collection of Live Art Works", as well as being the latest installment in Fado’s ongoing IDea series.
In Egalitarian, influences of pop culture and personal memories intersect as Liliefeldt creates the first in a series of "portraits shaped by ritualistic actions". This special midnight performance takes place in the artist's home, revealing a selection of her most private acts in an "intimate, honest, awkward and thoughtful" performance. Egalitarian will unfold through a series of images that respond to a specific set of popular songs. Liliefeldt explains: "I am interested in creating actions that respond to the pace and overall mood of each song while also representing ideas that until now I seemed unable to communicate within my artistic or social practices. They have something to do with deep and very personal opinions and emotions that have long been suppressed."
Liliefeldt notes her deep connection to those who have influenced her work:
"DEADICATIONS takes its inspiration from a handful of individuals whose life on earth was spent dedicated to the same things I believe in. I was profoundly affected by the dedication of these selected individuals, expressed through their chosen lifestyles and the messages they communicated -- whether through the lyrics they professed, their various art forms, or the statements made through life altering actions. All were motivated, inspired by or had no choice but to act with all they had, which in some cases was their life. They were all passionately driven by issues related to the politics of race and class. They are artists, writers and musicians who have given me the inspiration and will necessary to become the individual I am today, and the individual I have always been, as I realize little has changed when reflecting on who and what I am as well as why I am. These individuals are physically dead, but the essence of everything they stood for continues."
About the artist
Louise Liliefeldt is a Toronto-based performance artist and painter. Her work has been described as "iconographic portraits" and is predominately concerned with the politics of identity as it intersects with gender, race and class. She examines the cultural conventions of spectatorship and the links between emotional/psychological states and physical experience.
Born in Cape Town, South Africa with a lineage of relatives from Madagascar, Namibia, Germany, Zulu and Dutch it is easy to understand why issues of identity are vital in her artist practice. Living in a city as multicultural as Toronto is something she takes into consideration, as context plays an important role in the work she presents. This influence of her heritage is also apparent in her use of symbols, primary colors and natural materials. Further influences include her appreciation of Italian, Latin and Eastern European horror films, surrealism and African cinema.
Liliefeldt has been instrumental in setting up and organizing performance art events and workshops since the early 1990s as a collective member of the Shakewell Performance Art Collective, a committee member with Pleasure Dome Film & Video as well as being a co-founder and current steering committee member of 7a*11d International Performance Art Festival. From 1993 to 1999 Liliefeldt was the Distribution Manager at Vtape; she also spent two years with the Canadian Filmmakers’ Distribution Centre as the Tour Coordinator for their 35th Anniversary National Tour. She has served on juries for the Toronto Arts Council, OCAD, Images International Film & Video Festival and the Canada Council for the Arts.
Liliefeldt has presented her work across Canada, in the U.S., Poland, Turkey and Wales. The artist currently holds the position of Sessional Lecturer, teaching Performance Art at the University of Toronto.

The Elevated Gallery in Chinatown(Boston, MA), in an effort to open its doors to a wider range of art works and mediums, will be hosting its first performance art event on Saturday, October 22nd, 2005. This call is open to proposals for live performance as well as performance documentation (audio, video, 2d & 3d). The gallery includes one large space (aprox. 30'x75') with two small adjoined rooms (aprox. 8'x16').

This year we are intent on showing artwork to an even broader audience at the large city centre complex of UGC cinema, Cardiff. There are opportunities to show new forms of video, installation, photography, slides, motion graphics, live art, dance & movement, sonic art, music and anything else that cannot be named or that we haven't thought of putting in the show before! All applications considered!
Trailerpark has applied for funding to pay for travel costs and fees, so this will be taken into consideration along with any application for live work.
Trailerpark is a unique opportunity for artists to show work to a new and diverse audience. It is also a great opportunity to experience such work in a mainstream cinema environment.

In the spring of 2006 Performance Research will begin its second decade of publication, and we are devoting the four-issues of Volume 11 to an exploration of the terms under which performance is debated, discussed, conducted, written about and constructed, in the form of lexicons and dictionaries, encyclopedias and key words. Volume 11, No.2 (June 2006) is an an issue on the nature of the index as a form. The issue will explore the use of indexes as a means of recording and generating through alphabetic, numerical, or color schemas ; restriction or censorship of particular readings or performances; measurement, linking, adjustment, tracking and navigation; or their use as something visible, evident or revelatory that gives grounds for believing in the existence or presence of something else; as an operation to be performed, an ordering relation; as repertoire or register, rubric or catalogue. In particular the issue will explore what indexes can tell us about the textual and performance forms that they relate to. We invite artists and writers to consider these in relation to the histories, philosophies and pragmatics of performance, art making and performance writing.

[01] Introduction:
Since 1988, the "Independent Arts"-Festival has grown towards an international known event for any form of creativity. The aim of the Festival is both to present an overview of independent creativity world wide, performed by communication networks, and to create a meeting place for exchanging the acquired experiences. The Festival mainly focuses on artistic activities performed in scenes such as home-tape, Mail-Art, street art, small press, . On top of that, video, performance and fine art artists do get the possibility to exhibit and perform their creativity. As such, the "Independent Arts"-Festival is unique in its kind.
[02] Goal:
Issue 18 will focus itself on the interaction between artists and an estimated public of 700. The public will not only be able to "see" but also to "do" in various ways. For participating artists an extra challenge.
[03] Open for participation:
This Festival offers artists world-wide the opportunity to exhibit or perform any form of creativity. Participation is free. This can by being present and interacting with the public, sending up your artworks or art proposals for interaction with the public. The "Independent Arts"-Festival is a non-profit event, organised on a voluntary base by non-paid volunteers.
- Street Art: Stencil graffiti, stickering, postering, ... or any form of personal creativity related to street art.
- Fine art: Guest exhibitions from local young artists whom did not have, as yet, the possibility to exhibit their artwork.
- Mail-Art: Mail-Art or correspondence art has been part of international arts scene since the 50's by means of aesthetic items as rubberstamps, artistamps, artist trading cards, fluxus bucks, decorated postcards, ...
- Small press: A view on the scene of independent publications and small press, comic books or artists books. For many years, zines, or self-edited and self-published magazines, have become an essential communication form in several sub-cultures.
- Performance: Performance art is, with its mix of fine art and theatre, an almost unknown form of creativity. Spoken word, literature or poetry reading can undeniably be part of the Festival.
- Video: The world of moving images has broadened substantially as video, animation, independent film and documentary have been here for ages, with the internet and web-video becoming its most recent additions.
- Home-tape: In the homegrown-tape scene, musicians have been recording their synth stuff on cassette tape from the early 80's onwards, and mailing them directly to anyone interested. Since then slowly moving towards CD-recording and creation of new independent labels.

Send your proposal to Sztuka Fabryka. Deadline for proposals are 1 August 2005, 1 November 2005 and 1 February 2006. Your proposal will be discussed by the organising "Hotel Volzet". If your proposal has found a space within the programme, you will get noticed soon.

[05] Guidelines / rules:
Setting up the Festival with approximately 70 participating artists asks some co-ordination. Therefore we ask you to take notice of following guidelines / rules:
1. "Hotel Volzet" is bound to its own guidelines / rules, not to those which are practiced in any kind of art scene or network. Nor should it be linked to any specific art scene or network.
2. The resources for organising this Festival are limited. Therefore "Hotel Volzet" makes a selection of the proposals to set up an official programme with official artists. Non-selected artists are welcome as visitors.
3. "Hotel Volzet" can help in finding or provide dormitory. Catering will be available for official participants only, when this will be provided by "Hotel Volzet". "Hotel Volzet" will not provide anything which wasn't agreed.
4. Arrangements have to be made at least one month before the Festival, after this no more help will be given in providing food, shelter or transportation. No exceptions will be made as "Hotel Volzet" will focus itself on setting up the Festival only.
5. "Hotel Volzet" will not change the schedule of its programme for any reason at any time, without exceptions.
6. It is the artists responsibility to adjust his/her travel plans towards the schedule of the Festival.
7. Misconduct or the failure to produce the agreed participation may cause the loss of the conditions we agreed in return.
8. The participant must be aware that the circumstances (space, schedule, noise level) of the Festival can be different from the circumstances in which their activity is performed or shown usually. We ask the participant for understanding and for some adaptation towards the specific circumstances, as they are a part of the concept of our Festival.
9. We are not responsible for any personal or material damage caused during the Festival.
10. Every mail send to Sztuka Fabryka or "Hotel Volzet" will not make it as a definitive participation to the Festival, unless it has been agreed otherwise, or when "Hotel Volzet" invites you to make it a participation to the Festival.
11. Unless agreed otherwise submitted material (documents, tapes, DVD's, CD-Roms, photographs, .) will not be returned and will remain property of "Hotel Volzet", as part of its international art archives. Our aim is to promote the artists and their works in other festivals, shows and non-profit cultural activities, in Belgium and abroad. No contribution will be used for any kind of activity with commercial profit in mind.
12. The artist / license holder's rights to the work remain completely unaffected, especially the right to reproduce and distribute or otherwise make use of it. "Hotel Volzet" solely asks for the right to include the material in the 2006 'Independent Arts"-Festival and non-public exhibition right to use and screen the work in all our future projects.
13. We ask the right to publish some representative artwork in the Festival promotion material (website, press map).
14. "Hotel Volzet" is committed to clearly indicate which artists are responsible for the works shown.
15. A written statement will be asked to certify that you hold all necessary rights for the submission of this material and that you agree to the "Hotel Volzet" screening rules as outlined above.
16. After agreeing to your participation we will ask you for some information, we would like you to respond to this as soon as possible and as completely as possible. Failure to give it within the time as asked may be seen as finishing your participation to the Festival.
17. Failure to send in material by the deadline asked which we need to set up the Festival may be seen as finishing your participation to the Festival.
[07] Free Zone:
To broaden the Festival towards other visiting artists, a "Free Zone" will be present for non official participating artists to show their artworks. "Hotel Volzet" has the right to refuse and remove artworks, for example artworks which are considered as offensive and to make sure that others can show their artwork also. "Hotel Volzet" is not responsible for any damage.
[08] Catalogue / gift:
All contributing artists to the Festival will get a catalogue (CD-Rom format) / gift in return, available for participants only, produced as an unique piece by "Hotel Volzet".

[10] Organisation:
The 18th "Independent Arts"-Festival is curated by Sztuka Fabryka, and organised by "Hotel Volzet" (Bétime, Sztuka Fabryka, Nico Van Cleemput and Dries Pauwels). In co-operation with O.J.C. Kompas, the Cultural Centre of the city Sint-Niklaas, the Academy of Fine Arts and the Municipality of Sint-Niklaas.

"De Vierkante zaal" is the exhibition hall of the local Academy of Fine Arts (Stedelijke academie voor schone kunsten), situated in a building complex which also comprises the City Theatre (Stadsschouwburg).

Inspiré par l&Mac226;expérience mise sur pied par la Biennale d&Mac226;art contemporain de Lyon dès 1997, le projet consiste en la création d'une oeuvre publique en complicité avec un groupe de citoyens. Chaque artiste aura à sa disposition un autobus (véhicule scolaire ou de transport public désaffecté fourni par les municipalités) qu'il devra transformer, recréer, habiter et convertir à l&Mac226;intérieur comme à l&Mac226;extérieur. Les citoyens participants, qu'ils soient jeunes ou moins jeunes, d&Mac226;origines socioculturelles diverses, résidants d&Mac226;un même quartier ou individus oeuvrant dans un domaine spécifique, travailleront en ateliers, sous la conduite de l&Mac226;artiste.
Détourné de sa forme et de sa fonction originale, l&Mac226;autobus acquerra une vocation nouvelle, celle de conduire l&Mac226;art jusqu&Mac226;au public. Moyen de transport, mais aussi espace de rencontres et de convivialités, l&Mac226;autobus est le symbole par excellence de la rencontre et du rassemblement des individus. Nombreuses d&Mac226;ailleurs sont les métaphores inspirées par le transport en commun qui devient à la fois véhicule artistique, moyen de transmission des connaissances et outil servant à la circulation des idées. Basé sur l&Mac226;échange, la complicité dans la création, le partage des idées, et l&Mac226;ouverture sur l&Mac226;autre, ce projet permettra aux participants de réfléchir, notamment, sur la transmission et la réception de l&Mac226;art dans le public.
Dix municipalités québécoises participent au projet. Chacune a identifié un porteur de projet (maison de la culture, centre d&Mac226;exposition, centre d&Mac226;artistes, etc.) qui agira comme directeur de production et fera le relais entre l&Mac226;artiste et le groupe de participants. Nous lançons actuellement l&Mac226;appel de projets pour les municipalités suivantes : Gatineau, La Pocatière, Laval, Montréal (arrondissement Sud-Ouest), Saint-Hyacinthe, Shawinigan et Victoriaville.
Les ateliers de création auront lieu sur une période de six mois, entre mars et septembre 2006. Les oeuvres finales seront dévoilées et présentées dans un espace public et festif, un lieu symbolique de chaque municipalité, dans le cadre des Journées de la culture, les 29, 30 septembre et 1er octobre 2006. Les oeuvres-autobus seront par la suite rassemblés pour un événement-forum national à Québec, sous les auspices du Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, au cours du mois d&Mac226;octobre 2006.
Les artistes ou collectifs d&Mac226;artistes seront sélectionnés en fonction de leur intention de travail, de la pertinence de leur démarche et de leurs réalisations antérieures. Les artistes doivent indiquer la municipalité dans laquelle ils souhaiteraient réaliser le projet et identifier un groupe-cible avec lequel ils comptent travailler (adolescents, résidants d&Mac226;un quartier, membres d&Mac226;une coop, nouveaux arrivants, groupe de travailleurs, spécialistes d'une discipline, etc.) Il est souhaitable que les artistes habitent la municipalité ou la région identifiées ou qu&Mac226;ils en aient une bonne connaissance.
Chaque artiste recevra un cachet pour le travail de création (les ateliers) ainsi qu&Mac226;un budget distinct de production.

A Celebration of Sonic and Media Inspirations
Celebrating its sixth year, the Signal & Noise Festival will be presenting a rousing program of video, live sound performance, multi-channel electroacoustic compositions, installation and performance. This year's theme is: Body, Bodier, Bodiest.: Exercises in Physical Potentials.
Signal & Noise 2006 will take place in Spring 2006 at Video In Studios, Vancouver, BC, Canada.
We invite you to submit work based on the following themes:
Stunts
Demonstrations of astonishing physical & auditory antics, remarkable feats, capers, and daring interventions in public space. Live-action and pre-recorded acts of prowess, skill, dexterity, heroism, virtuosity, daring, cunning, or just plain self-importance for an evening in celebration of the show-off.
Fluids and Functions
Works dealing with the internal and external structure of the human or non-human body. Interpretations of internal and external elements, including body systems, sounds, actions, environment, and metaphysical realms.
The Macabre
Unsettling offerings that affect the body or mind. Recordings, installations, and performances born of the grotesque. Inspired distortions of the natural body into absurdity, ugliness, or caricature. Interdisciplinary work testing the body's strengths, weaknesses, and physical limitations.
HOW TO ENTER
Submitting your work to the festival is a two-part process. In order for us to track your application more easily, we will need you to send in the application form by email and send a hard copy of the
application form and all other materials (see below) by snail mail.
Part 1 (email): Use the submission form attached to this call or download the form from the Signal and Noise website at www.signalandnoise.ca. Use a word processor to fill in the form electronically, re-save the file with your name (e.g. Paul Wong.doc), and send it as an email attachment to velveeta@signalandnoise.ca.

Exploring the sources of our image life, their attendant emotions and ways to channel the results into our work. Using the whole body including the voice, start with building an impulse into an image. Explore the four guides for workable images. (deeper go deeper search further, search further) Then enter the image and find the partner. This is imaginary work at first. Play with committing and resisting the images and run them through the emotional wheels. Tie it all together in the performance source room. There will be a project to be completed before the workshop.
FIONA GRIFFITHS, MFA,RN, has twenty years teaching and performing experience in Dance, theatre and clown. She trained and worked closely with Richard Pochinko and Linda Putnam. Artistic Director of the Theatre Resource Centre in the early '90s, Fiona also taught in the graduate theatre programs of York and Yale Universities. She collaborates with Mump&Smoot and other clowns, coaches actors and dancers in Sourcework and has a private practice in Craniosacral Therapy and Kinetics. Fiona also teaches at Toronto Dance Theatre and is starting to set up workshops in Victoria and Vancouver.

14. NEWS/LOBBYING: National Coalition Seeks 150 Million For The Arts (Canada)

The Canadian Conference of the Arts has recently announced the formation of a national coalition of arts organizations that is driving a major advocacy campaign with the single purpose of increasing funding for the arts in Canada by $150 million dollars. The objective of the Canadian Arts Coalition is to convince the Federal Government to double the 2006 budget of the Canada Council for the Arts. The campaign has been organized to provide every artist and arts organization in Canada with the information and tools to participate.

The Centre for Women&Mac226;s Studies in Education is pleased to offer three 4-week workshops with Pam Patterson for those interested in community-based or personal work for action. They will be offered Mondays 6-9 pm through the Centre for Women&Mac226;s Studies in Education, in Room 2-227.
The intention, in these workshops, is to be open to what is possible, to start from our own experience and knowledge base in relation to the material presented, to strategize for action and create personally relevance spaces for ourselves or/and/in our communities.

Facilitator Pam Patterson is a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Women's Studies in Education OISE/UT. Pam has, for 25 years, been active in the health, art and women's communities. Her research, performance and teaching have focussed on embodiment in art practice, the body in art, women and health, disability studies, women's studies and feminist art education with publications in journals such as: Studies in Art Education, Resources for Feminist Research, Matriart: A Canadian Feminist Art Journal, FUSE, Parachute and presentations in conferences such as: the Feminism and Art Conference (Toronto), History of Art Education Symposium (Penn State), and Moving Bodies, Embodying Movement: Exploring the Rhetoric of the Body (State University of New York, Brockport). As a performance and visual artist she has exhibited and performed across Canada. This past year she presented a new performance work, Body as Site/sight for A Space & 7a*11d International Performance Art Festival in Toronto and lectured and performed works from the Body in Extremis series for Psi: Being Uncomfortable, Brown University, Rhode Island and Towards Tomorrow at the
University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Pam has been living for the last year with breast cancer.

Istvan Kantor longs to create a new society that challenges society’s role and that of individualism. A Kantorian utopia of human excesses and freedoms unimagined. An Eden that would make Bosch's version pale and tame. But instead, Kantor is caught in an endless struggle to bring down the putrid and stale society in which he is forced to live. His potent arsenal of propaganda, extraction, instinct, persistence, surprise, machinery, convulsion, conflict and controversy are not enough. His insurrection fails. Always. His radical diagnosis Life=Art=Life remains pure poetic nonsense. But this constant failure is the source of Kantor's motivating life force. His blood surges with artistic energy and desire. Kantor's total surrender to his art makes his efforts as ferocious as the self styled war he is fighting.

Kantor adds that "failed insurrections are the real insurrections because the victorious ones always betray their revolutionary ideals."While Kantor's work is rather poetical than political, his favorite terms, such as insurrection, conspiracy, takeover, subvertainment, total freedom, to only mention a few, are unfriendly
and conflicting to the art system.It is no accident therefore that Kantor's new work titled "BLEEDING TO DEATH - The Beauty of Failed Insurrections" will be presented by OFFTHEMAPGALLERY in its isolated location, far from the usual art scenes.The solo exhibition will focus on Istvan Kantor's action based object-compositions, undefined somewhere between installation and performance, termed by the artist as "lebensraum-art in progress".Istvan Kantor's work questions the rules of institutional authority in today's technological society. His highly critical vision is often in the center of debates in the media. Kantor received the Governor General's Award for Visual and Media Arts in 2004. 18. EVENT: "Performance Perimeters Symposium" (Regina)

Performance Perimeters Symposium is a festival organized in conjunction with a Performance Creation Canada conference to engage a conversation between artists, presenters and audiences on the convergence of forms and ideas that have come to characterize the forum of performance art. Performance Perimeters Symposium presents a diverse program of performance art, experimental dance and theatre traversing a broad range of local and global perspectives and boundaries.
The symposium includes delegates from across Canada and panel presentations on the subjects of arts and markets, intangible heritage, representation & self representation, cultural agency, audiences, economies, criticism and curation. This unique Regina event is being organized by four arts organizations who have joined in presenting live perspectives and practices from a wide range of contemporary artists and thinkers.
Organized by New Dance Horizons, Neutral Ground, Curtain Razors and Sakewewak Artists Collective, PPS is a meeting ground for artists and public to engage with performance work and join in the conversation with other artists, presenters, theorists and writers. Artists including Istvan Kantor, Edward Poitras, MJ Thompson, Jillian Mcdonald, David Yonge, Debra Dunn, Lori Blondeau, PHONO, Sarah Abbott, Davida Monk, Helen Walkley and others will perform in more than eight Regina locations. Panelists David Garneau, Kathleen Irwin, Rachelle Viader Knowles, Daniel Anderson, Adrienne Wong, Maiko Bae Yamamoto, Naomi Campbell, Glenn Alteen and others will introduce new approaches to the economies of performance art and interdisciplinary work.
"Enjoy the restorative powers of symposia." A time and place to take in a moment, a breath, a critical "pause" as Brian Patterson suggests, "We might be doing by engaging & being engaged in the performative."
Performance program and events start with an introductory event Wednesday November 2 and commences Thursday November 3 through Sunday November 6, 2005. Performance Creation Canada meetings and events take place over the weekend with registration available on line and starting Friday, November 4 at 4:00 pm. The public are invited to attend all events.
Conference registration is at 4:00 pm on Friday November 4 at Regina's Royal Canadian Legion, 1820 Cornwall Street, Regina, SK.
