1. Fado jumps into 2006
Welcome to a new year, with best wishes to all from Fado. We are hard at work on many new projects, beginning in January with residencies featuring Alain-Martin Richard from Quebec and Warren Arcan from Vancouver.
Alain-Martin will be engaging with Torontonians through an extended project that begins with the notion of how we can encounter one another. He invites Fado's audiences to take part in a "manouevre" that will culminate in the presentation of an installation work this coming June. For the first critical phase, taking place over January and early February, he is looking for Toronto citizens from all walks of life to meet with him (see the call below).
Warren Arcan will be in Toronto for several weeks beginning mid-January, including a presentation as part of the Drake Hotel's Notes from the Underground series on January 24. Stay tuned for further details.
This is just the beginning of a jam-packed season of presentations that will be announced over the coming weeks.

2. Alain-Martin Richard asks Torontonians to lend him their hands
January marks the beginning of Alain-Martin Richard's project Étrangers - Strangers - Fremde, presented as part of the latest installment in Fado's ongoing Canadian Performance Art Legends series. You can participate in his project by agreeing to meet with him and lend him your hands. He writes:
"Étrangers is an urban "manoeuvre" to be undertaken in the neighbourhoods of Toronto as a form of research into the "other". Who are these others? What do they do with their hands, these black, white, yellow, brown, Muslim, Christian and Buddhist others, these sectarian others, these others from around the world, these others who live together in the city? Is it enough for us to live side by side? How do we come together, face to face? Where is ethnicity located within urban architecture? How does the new psychogeography of territory modify us?
"My work in the city - this, the exact place of the manoeuvre, with its specific configuration, its openings and closings, its releases and its enclosures, its devastated or confined zones - rests on the gathering of the rough material, the intimate contact and the way of getting there.
"I seek hands. If you live in Toronto, lend me your hands. Your hands may be black, white, or brown. They might be from here, or from elsewhere. This project seeks a method of recognition, a rapport stripped down to what we share.
"I will move through the city in January and February 2006. And I will present a multi-media installation of my encounters at the beginning of June."

Yoyo Yogasmana, one of the most important Indonesian artist of his generation, will give a three-day performance workshop as part of articule's Special Projects. In this workshop, the artist from Sunda will draw a historical and critical portrait of performance art in the Indonesian socio-cultural context. The participants are invited to share their ideas on the notions of "national identity" and on the function of art in their own social, cultural and economic fabric. The workshop will be concluded with propositions of performances and manoeuvres by the participants. The events will take place at articule and will be accompagnied by discussions on the process.

It isn't a very good description unfortunately. It should be called Devised Theatre or Performance Creation instead of Performance Production. Oh well....
What we are looking for:
Someone who is familiar (1st hand) with the world of physical theatre and (ideally) the pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq, has a specialization - circus skills, musical instrument, vocal etc. - that could form part of the training of performers, and someone who is interested in and conversant with theoretical concerns linking all the arts and sciences. We are not trying to create an equivalent of l'ecole Lecoq in the sense that LISPA is doing (not because I don't think the pedagogy deserves to be followed that closely) .... but mainly because universities, as I'm sure you're aware are very difficult places to combine both physical training and academic profile for numbers of reasons. Nonetheless, we will be planning a program founded on the development of the performer's body and the exploration of devised performances - created both collectively (auto cours) and individually. We have the good fortune here to be closely associated with an innovative visual arts program where I've found plenty of like-minded art makers involved in the study of creativity and the production of live art. So. What we want is someone who could do several of the following examples: (asterix indicates high priority)
*teach/explore neutral mask, commedia and clown (for example)
*teach a physical/vocal discipline on an ongoing basis
*research/creation work with a national/international profile (performance tour for example)
*lecture to a large class on aspects of (for example) theatre anthropology and theories of performance
-teach the composition of texts for performance in the creative writing program
-teach performance art in the visual arts program
-research/creation in collaboration with faculty in other
disciplines/faculties/fields (social sciences,
philosophy, management, digital recording technology etc.)
I teach physical performance techniques and use yoga, mime, light acrobatics, juggling and others; in the realm of 'play' I teach improvisation, clown, tragedy, mask, site-specific performance and versions of performance art. In my prior position at the University of Saskatchewan, I also devised annual, large-cast performances based on a variety of sources - 'mainstage productions' in a traditional university Drama program. This will be an important part of the program as well: regular in-house and public performances.
One of the big buzz words here (no disrespect intended) is 'interdisciplinary'. This is of course home base for most theatre makers. We touch all the arts and sciences when we're communicating at out best.
The performance/theatre program will be housed temporarily in the Fine Arts building. A new performance facility is in the early planning stages. The program will begin officially in 2007.
The position is posted as full-time tenure-track. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens in the case of 2 candidates of equivalent qualifications and suitability.

We will use performance strategies to enliven social and political content for action focusing on issues around women’s health and safety - including for example: violence against women, disability issues, systemic racism and sexism. Using feminist pedagogy we will explore strategies artists and activists use, and develop our own. Drawing on performance poetry, the work of Paulo Friere, performance art and political theater, this workshop combines discussion and practice.
The intention, in this workshop is to be open to what is possible, to start from our own experience and knowledge base in relation to the material presented, to strategize for action and create personally relevance spaces for ourselves or/and/in our communities.

ABOUT THE GIBRALTAR POINT INTERNATIONAL ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM
The Gibraltar Point Residency transcends political, aesthetic and geographic boundaries, welcomes diversity and provides a spawning ground for unique cultural alliances. The program is open to Canadian and international artists who are engaged in the research, development or creation of work. Emerging, mid-career and established professional artists are invited to apply. Participants in the residency program receive accommodation, a private work studio and all meals at no cost. Travel and material costs are the responsibility of participating artists.
The residency program aims to further the professional development of artists by: enabling the creation and production of new work; fostering an exchange of ideas and influences; encouraging the sharing of expertise; inspiring new works of art and creative collaborations; and building relationships between artists working in different media. The program is designed and managed by Artscape and takes place for a single 30-day term each calendar year at the Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts on Toronto Island.

Situated on the south-western beachfront of Toronto Island, The Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts owes its name to its location marked by Toronto's oldest landmark - the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, which was erected in 1808. Operated by Artscape, this 30,000 square foot unique facility provides permanent studio space to more than a dozen artists and a Retreat Centre, which can be rented for a variety of functions. In addition to hosting the Residency Program, the Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts features Artscape Lodge; a short-term rental service with accommodation and work studios for up to 13 visiting artists.
Toronto Island is a peaceful 230-hectare natural park in Toronto's harbour, a short 15-minute ferry ride from the thriving downtown core of Canada's cultural capital. Naturalized areas and wildlife reserves make it a popular stopover point for southern song birds. 11. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: ANTI Contemporary Art Festival 2006 (Finland)

The fifth ANTI festival will be organized in Kuopio from September 28th to October 1st 2006. ANTI is a forum for experimental, radical and non-commercial art. It offers an international and visible possibility to bring forward performances and ways of expression that are not considered mainstream art. The emphasis of ANTI festival is on environmental art, light, sound, installation, live art and performances.
The Festival seeks to activate 12 previously selected sites/environments with the help of pieces of art. The pieces can take place directly in the proposed place or conceptually in- or outdoors.
It is essential for the proposals to take into consideration the audience and customers that are already present at each location. Site-specificity is an extremely important factor when it comes to assessing and selecting momentary performances as well as sculptural works. In addition to the physical place the idea of the work can deal with the notion of space through people who work in that particular place or the values, actions or contemporary events that the place represents. The piece may also somehow combine various locations and themes. The artist(s) choose(s) a location for his/her/their piece from the ones proposed.
The proposals must include the name of the artist, contact details and a CV, working title of the work, place, budget, technical requirements and a working plan (max. 1 page) and only one appendix (i.e. photograph, video, CD-ROM). Appendices will not be returned. It is not necessary that the proposal is technically ready before submission as the idea can be developed afterwards. However, it is important that the main idea of the work and the estimated costs are clearly stated in the proposal. Estimated costs should include all the necessary materials, travelling costs and performing fee. Other possible sources of financing such as bursaries should also be stated in the proposal. Artists and students from all artistic fields as well as designers are encouraged to submit their new ideas and works of art.
The sites of the ANTI 2006 festival are the town hall, the cinema Maxim, a youth centre, the balcony of Carlson department store, a hotel room in the Hotel Puijonsarvi, the observatory, the airport, Väinölänniemi tennis court, an empty building ground, Huoneistokeskus estate agency, Savonia polytechnic and Kuopio office of Kela (the Social Insurance Institution of Finland).

12. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Performance Art Series, DeLeon White Gallery

I am the artistic director for a new performance art series that will be taking place at the DeLeon White Gallery starting this February. If you are not familiar with the space, it is quite large and open, with two floors (and a rooftop...) The main floor is a vast empty space and the 2nd floor has three small rooms, two of which require occupation (we have one installation that will take place throughout the five month run of this festival that will occupy one of these rooms...) I am looking for programming to fill every single part of this space, the ground, (or aerial...)
The festival will run every Saturday, from February until June. Each month will have it's own unique block of programming. There are specific installations/tasks we are looking for at the present time (for specific months) and then we are making a general call towards any performance art, any act of expression, theatrical, visual, whatever - for the rest of the five month period.
This festival will be broadcast live upon the internet (and archived upon the emmersive website) and we are going to film the before, during, and after of every performance day, for a future possibility of a television broadcast (an idea we are currently in heavy exploration of...)
Honorarium to any participant will be paid through the gate and other auxiliary revenues (with potential to grow if a television deal is struck...)
This will be an atmospheric, sensual, explosive art gathering, unlike anything ever seen in this city (which is one of the many reasons to do it...) Polite expression will have no place here - we are looking for the challenging, the daring, and the fearless, something that will excite every sense of every participant and audience member. You are going to be walking into a playground of art, with no linear rules dividing performer and audience.
It will be wild, to say the least...
The programming for February is beginning to take shape (but we are still looking...) and then we are putting out a general call. I encourage you, even if your idea is not fully formed, to come and find us. I am the kind of man who helps in realizing visions, so if you have been toying with the notion of something, come and find me. If you have a piece/installation fully formed, but have yet to find a home for it, I want you to come and find us, and we will help you make it happen. This gallery aims to be the centre of all explosive art in the new year - you will want to be here, with us, in celebration...

We will require resource materials - CV/artistic resume, photos and/or video/dvd evidence of your work. (if you do not have video documentation, don't let that stop you...)
Specifics Installations...
For February 4th, 11th, 18th, and the 25th...
I require 5-6 dancers for one installation of my own design, exploring improvised choreographic duets of a primal nature. You must be uniquely explosive in your physicality, daring, imaginative, charismatic, able to process incoming information quickly, (on the fly in the literal sense...) and have strong communicative skills. A keen self-awareness to improvise is definitely an asset. (You must also be ready for vocal or physical audience participation as well...) No polite behaviour is allowed...Your participation will not be determined by audition, but by the interview process and conversation. I am not looking for technical precision, but a creative, open spirit, and a physical urgency to your dance. This installation will involve communication with your audience, who will be surrounding all four sides of a floor-level stage to be built in the gallery, and your movement will be accompanied by live, improvised music.
We are also seeking musicians for this installation, leaning towards a percussive bent (but I'm open to anything on this...) You must have strong improvisational skills, and a feel for the moment.
For any (and in some case, every) month...
I am seeking painters who have a unique physicality of performance in their creation. There is an idea I have been toying with, and I am looking for the right individual(s) who've always wanted to show off their physical prowess whilst in creation in another form, in this particular case, painting...
We are also seeking wandering poets. You will be asked to circulate throughout the space, find anyone you wish, and perform for them poetry, one on one, or to a smaller group. You must have a unique ability to deliver the word, and more importantly, actually be one hell of a poet.
Also, poets/mcs who are quite familiar with the tradition of SLAM poetics are extremely encouraged to participate...(there will be a few incidents in the upcoming months...)
We are also seeking any art form that parallels this idea of individual performance...
We are seeking a visual installation artist (or artists, or a collective...) to frame the entire narrative - something atmospheric. You are part of setting the tone for the kind of night we are supposed to have - it's not merely about lighting or projection, but flavour and texture. I want people with a unique vision to fill the space with magic - something that will be felt the moment you walk in...
We are also seeking an audio installation of a similiar intent, something atmospheric, to frame the narrative of the proceedings, a sonic soundscape.
General Call
We are looking for dance/theatre installations that are either ongoing throughout the night, or maximum 15 minutes in length. Any and everything goes. So if there's a dance piece you have, or a piece of theatrical narrative, or something that combines both, and you feel it is suitable for what we are going to do, let us know. There is a central stage being built, but we would also like to fill other parts of the gallery with these kinds of expressive acts, so bear that in mind...
We are seeking any and every kind of musician who may have an idea of something they can do within the walls of the gallery. I am open to any concept. I am also looking for a lot of percussion...
Any visual installation of any kind, utilizing any form of painting, sculpture, drawing, film, projection, (fused with any other form) whatever...if you have an idea, any idea, come and talk to us.
Any medium of performance art. Anything.
Remember, we are looking to fill five months of programming, so if you merely have an idea, it's perfectly alright to approach us with it. And if there is something you have you think will be ready for a later month, then by all means approach us with it as well.
I am saying this - I do have a personal bias towards a certain kind of expression, yes. And I am the kind of individual who is quite vocal in his opposition and celebration of certain things. But I don't have to like your idea, or I don't even have to like you personally - if it's something that is honestly trying, and searching, and it merits an investigation or the eye of an audience, the doors are open to you.
Anyone wishing to volunteer for the event is highly encouraged to contact me.
Anyone wishing to donate furniture of any kind to the event (carpets, couches, pillows, mattresses, chairs etc.) is also encouraged to get in touch with me.
More information will be coming as time progresses, but for the moment, this is where we are at, and what we are looking for. Chances are, there is an idea I haven't even touched upon that is worth an investigation, so by all means, feel free to contact and inform me. (Try not to take forever in doing so - there is only so much programming we can fit in to five months...) We do have deadlines that are flexible, but I am partial to those who have not only a vision, but a passion that makes them call it out in the immediate...
I am available at the gallery on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 to 5:00 pm, so feel free to drop in and discuss your ideas.
This festival is open to anyone in this country, or outside of it. (in other words, worldwide...)

In February 2006, Performance Creation Canada comes to Toronto!
In an exciting first-ever collaboration, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (Rhubarb! Festival of New Works), the Theatre Centre (Free Fall) and Harbourfront Centre will co-host the Toronto meeting of Performance Creation Canada, February 2-5, 2006, with performances, events and panel discussions held at all three venues.
Performance Creation Canada is a nationwide network dedicated to the nourishment, management and study of performance creation in Canada, and the ecology in which it flourishes.
As such, Performance Creation Canada (PCC) will endeavour to identify and advance the multifaceted interests of a multidisciplinary definition of work that is performed by the artist(s) who created it. PCC invites the participation of all artists, administrators, educators, funding institutions, presenters, agents, archivists and critics from the fields of theatre, dance, performance art, music and interdisciplinary work who are interested in the well being of the Canadian performance creation milieu.
Focusing squarely on the creators and posing the question, *Where Are the Artists?*, the conference in Toronto will explore the state of performance creation within broader artistic, cultural, political and social practices. Artists, practitioners and presenters from a wide range of locations, disciplines and traditions will gather to discuss such topics as: alternative models for new work development; the physical and metaphoric structures within which artists work; the position of the artist and artistic practice in contemporary culture; the politics of performance creation; and, the state of queer performance today. A great mix of national and local creators, producers and presenters will be on hand to meet and mingle for four fabulous, friendly days.
All events take place at Buddies In Bad Times Theatre (12 Alexander St.), Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West) and The Theatre Centre (1087 Queen St. West).
