3. REQUEST FOR "FALSE PROJECTS": "Foulard au cou" SKOL (Montréal)
Deadline: January 10, 2007; Source: SKOL

Merci infiniment!

Manuelle Gauthier

5. CALL FOR PAPERS: "Performative Histories of Art: Perilous Conventions, Possible Disruptions" York University (Toronto)
Deadline:January 15, 2007; Source: Instant Coffee

The Art History Graduate Students Association of York University cordially invites proposals for contributions to its sixth annual symposium, addressing the theme:

Performative Histories of Art: Perilous Conventions, Possible Disruptions
March 9th, 2007
Department of Art History
York University
Toronto, Canada

Within art discourses, the term ‘performance’ can describe staged, interdisciplinary artworks which often emphasize actors over objects. By contrast, the term ‘performativity’ derives from Derrida’s intervention into linguistic philosopher John L. Austin’s concept of ‘performative utterances', and refers to the iterability of speech acts and identity. Theories of the performative tend to emphasize the constitutive nature of performative repetition as well as the possibility of endless citationality; thus performativity is not a question of intention or choice, but rather, as Judith Butler observes in Bodies that Matter (1993): “'performance' is not a singular 'act' or event, but a ritualized production, a ritual reiterated under and through constraint, under and through the force of prohibition and taboo.” It is clear, then, that performativity is a multi-valenced concept, and that performance can signify any number of different events or practices.

The committee seeks academic papers on any relevant topic including, but not limited to:
Performance art
The art critic / art historian / artist as performer
Gender performativity
Museums and their institutional production
Tableaux in painting and photography
“Giving the conference paper” as performance
Discursive theatricality
Ephemerality in/of art
Imposter syndrome
Queering art history
The performative impulse in self-portraiture
The production and reproduction of (art)history through
performance
Display practices, viewing experiences
Rituals and ritualistic behavior
Art interventions/ intervention art
Etc.

We invite proposals for 15-minute presentations from interested graduate students of all disciplines.

Please submit abstracts of 250 words, contact information, and a description of your audio-visual requirements to york_art_history@yahoo.ca by January 15, 2007. Applicants may expect a response by January 24th, 2007.

12. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS (CONFERENCE): "MutaMorphosis: Challenging Arts and Sciences" (Czech Republic)
Deadline: January 31, 2007; Source: Leonardo/ISAST

MutaMorphosis: Challenging Arts and Sciences, International Conference, Prague, Czech Republic

International Conference organized by CIANT as part of the ENTER festival in the framework of the Leonardo 40th anniversary celebrations. The festival will feature also the first retrospective exhibition of the work of Frank J. Malina.

8-10 November 2007, Prague, Czech Republic
Conference website: <www.mutamorphosis.org>

The conference will explore the major mutations that are affecting the future of our world. We invite papers from artists, scientists and researchers on the evolution of life and the societies they constitute, and on modes of knowledge, expression and communication of humans, animals and other forms of life.

MutaMorphosis seeks a multiplicity of perspectives as well as a qualified and diverse group of conference participants. The conference will concentrate on the growing interest within the worlds of the arts, sciences and technologies in extreme and hostile environments. 15. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: "M:ST 4" (Calgary)
Deadline: February 15, 2007; Source: The New Gallery

Local, national and international artists are invited to submit proposals for performative works and lectures to be presented as part of the M:ST 4 Festival in October, 2007.

M:ST encourages the submission of innovative performative works, media/audio works, site-specific works, public interventions and lecture/panel based proposals. The term “performative” describes practices that originate from a visual or media arts discourse and involve the live presence of the artist. These often incorporate sound, video, film, spoken word, or live web streaming.

M:ST is accepting general proposals and proposals that address the following themes, from professional artists, curators, critics and cultural workers of all backgrounds, and the M:ST 4 Festival will include performative works which include both gallery or off-site exhibitions. M:ST meets or exceeds the recommended minimum CARFAC artist exhibition fee. Travel, accommodation and shipping assistance is contingent on sufficient funding.

A. CALL FOR GENERAL PROPOSALS

The M:ST 4 Performance Series will take place within the gallery as well as in offsite and public spaces and tap into current, contemporary practices and dialogues in Canadian and International performance.

B. CALL FOR THEMED PROPOSALS

Sitelology: Digital Public Space will showcase artists who employ pod-casts, audio, video or film interventions, web-based or new media as performative interventions to sculpt and mould ‘virtual’ spaces. Performances will engage the audience in unexpected and unsuspecting contexts, where notions of digital public and private space may be blurred or agitated

Critical Initiatives Series will present critical dialogue through lectures, panel discussions, and commissioned writing. Adding to the pool of critical thinking around performative practices, this series will serve to broaden the educational scope of the festival and provide opportunities for dialogue and exchange.

Polemics of Performance Series will present artists who draw upon the extensive dialogues of feminism, queer theory, and post-colonial critiques to insert themselves into the fabric of the gallery space, public spaces, or everyday encounters. These works challenge, unpack, problematize, and tear at the illusory fabric of the consensual everyday experience.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

Proposals are reviewed through a peer review process by the M:ST Programming Committee consisting of local artists and programmers who have extensive visual, performance, and media art backgrounds.

Applicants should expect to hear the results of our selections process by March of 2007. Please check <http://www.mstfestival.org />www.mstfestival.org for updates on the programming process.

The following materials must be included in your proposal for the PERFORMANCE SERIES or THEMED SERIES:

- curriculum vitae: Maximum of 3 pages, describe your artistic background (e.g. education, grants, scholarships or awards received, professional status, previous exhibitions or performances, commissions, professional memberships, articles, etc.)
- venue preference: Explain which venue you wish to perform in and why it is important to your work
- proposal: Describe the proposed performance, exhibition or project and the thematic context in which you are applying. Provide details about your spatial, and material requirements, including equipment needs. Maximum 2 pages.
- artist statement: Maximum of 1 page
- budget: Explain costs involved in presenting your project.
- slides and/or other relevant audio or visual materials: Provide a maximum of 15 numbered and labeled slides (name, title, date), cued VHS tapes (max 10 min.), CD-ROMs (please confirm with the gallery that it is compatible with our equipment and software), audio cassettes or other relevant support materials.
- documentation list: A clearly labeled and numbered list of the documentation enclosed, including the artist(s) name(s), titles, dates, mediums and dimensions.
- self-addressed sufficiently stamped envelope: Due to excessive costs for the Festival, your submission will not be returned without one.

When building your proposal, please keep in mind that each jury member receives and reviews a photocopy of your written materials before they view your visual support material. Do not staple or bind your materials in any way. Additional materials will not be distributed to the committee.

Deadline: All proposals must be postmarked or arrive at the Mountain Standard Time P.O. Box by DEADLINE FEBRUARY 15, 2007

20. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: "Wünder der Prairie" zeitraum_ex!t (Germany)
Deadline: March 31, 2007; Source: zeitraum_ex!t

Call for Submissions For Performance-Art, Theatre, Dance, Radio-play, Video-art

For 7 years zeitraum_ex!t has organised an annual festival. They started with the 9th International Performance Conference in 2000 with the theme “The art of acting”. Since 2004 the festival is named “Wonders of the Prairie”.

“Wonders of the Prairie” stands for international, experimental, and extraordinary art projects which bring together fine and performing arts.

Amongst others, the following artists and groups participated: Anna Huber, Stefan Kaegi, Alastair MacLennan, Boris Nieslony, Lindy Annis, Gob Squad, Jaap Blonk, Théâtre du Radeau, Stan’s Café, Yoko Tawada, FarADayCage, Volker Gerling, Mike Pearson, LaS Company,Tatsumi Orimoto, Ene-Liis Semper, She She Pop.

The Theme: 400 hours for 400 years of town history
In 2007 the festival will focus on the 400th anniversary of Mannheim: zeitraum_ex!t will provide one room with fixed illumination and fixed basic equipment.

This room will be opened 400 hours, from September 12, 7 p.m. through September 29, 9 a.m. and can be visited all day round.

The artists’ equipment will stay in the room and must not be removed before the end of the festival. This way, the room changes, it grows, is in constant flow. Every artist is confronted with unpredictable changes and has in turn the opportunity to make changes himself/herself (this also applies groups of artists).

In this room, theatre and performance projects will take place and will be rehearsed. Readings, video projections, and radio plays will guide through the night. All what is going on is open to the public.

Interviews with artists, the festival organisers, town planners, stage set designers, and archaeologists accompany the festival and are another important part of the 400-hour event.

For 400 hours, the room will be a model for the passing of time, for the perception of time, and for the changes that take place by the presence and the intervention of men. A space of history and of stories will come into existence.

Even the organisers cannot predict which artistic processes will take place and which shape the room will take.

What is going on will only be structured by the sequence of the artists and speakers selected.

zeitraum_ex!t is seeking artists (performance art, theatre, dance) who orientate their projects towards the given parameters and who are willing and flexible enough to work with and to adapt to the unpredictable changes of the space of the event.

-Basics of the room: unequipped stage room, stage approx. 10 x 6 ms; the room will contain 2 tables and 8 chairs; the space for the audience and the stage are fixed.
-Basic conditions illumination: there is a fixed illumination concept; within the given frame the illumination can however be determined and controlled.
-Technical Equipment: microphones, monitors, projector, DVD-player, VHS-player, illumination control, mixing panel, CD player.
- Equipment: all equipment must be left in the room; it may be used by the following artists, must however not be damaged. If necessary, the equipment can be shipped back after the festival.
- Technical equipment and tools provided by the artists are for their own use only and have to be taken back after the festival.

It is possible to carry through projects which last several days; they might however be interrupted by other projects, which means that the space might be changed and the project has to be developed in another way than planned.

It is possible to do short projects of 40 – 90 minutes.

zeitraum_ex!t is seeking artists (radio play, video-art) who want to deal with the festival theme. Key points are: time, process, history, place, development, perception of time, live, age. These presentations too will take place in the same room as the other projects and are part of what will happen during these 400 hours.

Video-installations are not possible.

Please note that all preparatory work, rehearsals, the furnishing, etc. is an activity which takes place in the public; everything that goes on in this room is open to the public.

Festival Duration: September 12, 7 p.m. through September 29, 9 a.m.
Deadline: March 31, 2007 (date of the postmark)
Applications / Proposals should be sent to: zeitraum_ex!t, Lange Rötterstr. 23, 68167 Mannheim, GERMANY
Artistic Directors: Gabriele Oßwald, Wolfgang Sautermeister, Elke Schmid, Tilo Schwarz

Applications should consist of:
- A meaningful concept (video, pictures, description with an outline of the relation to the festival project)
- CV
- Scheme of costs (roayalty, material, etc.9
- Technical requirements
- Equipment
- Self-addressed answer envelope
