1. FADO NEWS
March was the end of Fado's fiscal year, and we ended it with a spectacular set of events, beginning with Enter-Gration, the emerging artist series curated by Fado Board member Nahed Mansour, followed by two new IDea projects featuring David Khang and Elvira Santamaria (who performed for 90 hours over 9 days). Toronto audiences were left with many evocative and delicate moments to contemplate.
We start off our new season by co-sponsoring the Opening NIght Gala at the Images Festival. On Thursday, April 5, 2007 at 9 pm, join us at The Royal for a special screening of SEVEN EASY PIECES BY MARINA ABRAMOVIC, a documentary film by Babette Mangolte. This screening is also dedicated to the Canada Council for the Arts in celebration of its 50th Anniversary. Tickets will sell out fast, so book right away! "In November of 2005 Marina Abramovic performed SEVEN EASY PIECES in the rotunda at the Guggenheim Museum in New York; in this week-long series of performances she reenacted seminal performance works from the 1960s and '70s by Bruce Nauman, Vito Acconci, Valie Export, Gina Pane, Joseph Beuys and herself, interpreting them as one would a musical score. The film is a reflection on performance art and body art outlining physical fragility, versatility, tenacity and unlimited endurance as seen in the work of Marina Abramovic. The film Seven Easy Pieces by Marina Abramovic is about the performing body and how it affects viscerally the people who confront it, look at it and participate in the transcendental experience that is its primary effect. The ceremonial and meditative are the common responses to the week-long series of performances that took place in November 2005 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. From an art event to a social phenomenon, the seven performances became the talk of the town because they created among the visitors a sense of sublimation, like prayer. The film attempts to reveal the mechanisms of this transcendental experience by simply showing the performer's body living the events inscribed in each piece with details that outline the body's fragility, versatility, tenacity and unlimited endurance."

The Lab Sessions are a series of interactive art parties hosted and curated by Labspace Studio. Each Lab Session fuses the vibe of a house party with the sensibility of an art gallery to create an alternative party-going experience. Simply put, The Lab Sessions are parties for people who dig art. What to expect at a Lab Session? Interactive art projects, performances, cheap booze, a good crowd, a sticky dance floor and no cover!
Currently Labspace Studio is looking for artists willing to present their work(s) for the first installment of The Lab Sessions 1.0 - “Nodes & Naughty Codes”.

From sunset on September 30 to sunrise on October 1, 2006, artists transformed Toronto. The city became a playground, a meeting place, a political forum, a place of art, wonder, awe and intrigue. From parks, swimming pools and car washes to galleries, museums, schools and institutions, the city came together as a community and embraced Nuit Blanche.
An estimated 425,000 revellers left behind the comfort of their beds for this free all-night exploration of Toronto through contemporary art. Unlike any event ever produced in North America, Nuit Blanche was completely distinctive and a transformative celebration of creativity. The overwhelmingly positive post-event response was unprecedented.
Toronto Special Events is thrilled to announce that the magic of Nuit Blanche will return to light up the city of Toronto in 2007. From sunset to sunrise on September 29, 2007, Torontonians and tourists alike are invited to encounter the city in a new way and rediscover Toronto through Nuit Blanche Exhibitions and Independent Projects.
Under the direction of the Nuit Blanche curatorial team, the City of Toronto will commission and fund up to 30 site-specific public art works (10 per Exhibition Site) by local, national and international artists.
Fifteen additional local projects (5 per Exhibition) will be included in the Nuit Blanche Exhibitions and chosen by the curators from the Open Call Project submissions. We are pleased to invite artists to submit application forms to participate in Nuit Blanche through the Open Call.

Le Petit Versailles 2007 - 10th Anniversary Season
LPV 2007 is a project of Allied Productions, Inc. , a non-profit arts service organization and neighborhood members as a GreenThumb public garden located at 346 East Houston / 247 East 2nd St. in the East Village. We present public events & community projects April - October, publish PLOT and produce LPVTV, a weekly cable series. It is volunteer based and dedicated to preserving the vitality of NYC greenspace through the arts - broadening & enriching the general public with free performances, screenings, workshops and similar activities.
We are looking for unusual ideas that address the environment, social and progressive issues and site specific nature of the garden itself. Temporary installations, performances, films, workshops and volunteers in any discipline are desired. Exhibitions must include works that withstand the rigors of nature. We are also an available site for the community service proponent of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Program.

There are few places in Canada where in-depth theatrical research can be explored without the pressures of developing and/or performing a new work. Nightswimming's unique Pure Research program provides space, money and resources to artists who are pursuing a provocative theatrical question.
Now in its fifth year, Pure Research is designed to foster theatrical experiments which are not specifically linked to the creation of new work. In the spirit of inquiry, we assist artists in discovering what they need to explore, in order to further their work. We want you to tell us what you don't know, and how you might be able to answer your questions through a Pure Research workshop.
What does that mean?
If you have a theatrical question, and can pose it in terms of an experiment, then we're interested. We will supply studio space for up to three days, a $1000 fee for the lead researcher and a modest budget for artists and materials.
In 2005 we launched a new partnership with the University of Toronto Graduate Drama Centre. Pure Research was last held December 11-21, 2006, at their Glen Morris Studio Theatre on the UofT campus. We are very excited to open our program to graduate students and to benefit from the resources of the Centre.
In 2006 we conducted three research workshops:
* Cathy Nosaty, Laurel MacDonald and Philip Strong explored theatrical applications for Ableton Live sound recording software, in collaboration with a group of dancers, actors and musicians.
* Camellia Koo, Guillermo Verdecchia and Christine Brubaker investigated the relationship between audience and performer when each is enclosed in an 8' by 8' box.
* Moynan King and Sherri Hay addressed the tipping point between performer and audience as one becomes the other, using period costumes as the catalyst.
All Pure Research projects are documented and the results posted on Nightswimming's website. Researchers are required to submit a full report within one month of completing their experiment. Nightswimming staff will be present to observe and to offer assistance as required.

Pure Research Submission Process
We need a concise but detailed proposal outlining:
- your question and what you want to learn from it
- how you intend to conduct the experiment - this is the most
important section of the application
- practical details such as time, people and equipment required
- any relevant support material such as text or prior research
We are particularly interested in:
- exploring poetic or stylized text in any form or genre
- integration of sound, movement, technology and text
- artists who view research and development as a long-term process,
rather than simply as a short-cut to production
- an artistic spirit of inquiry
What to send us:
- a cover letter introducing yourself and defining the application:
preferred dates, amount of time requested, budget, specific goals
- a project description of no more than two pages
- a list of collaborators, if known
- c.v. of principal artist
- videos: only to introduce us to physical artists. Please provide a brief
explanation of where and when the video was shot
- do not send press clippings, photos, programs, press kits or folders

- Remember that it is not a developmental workshop for a new piece of theatre

Allenheads Contemporary Arts would like to receive proposals from artists interested in following a line of research into the earth's base elements. The project aims to explore in broad terms, how we comprehend and relate to the matter of our planet.
Artists will be able to invite a collaborator from any field of the arts or sciences, to bring their knowledge and experience to the project.
These 2 residencies are the first in the Base Elements series, which will collectively present a broad picture of our complex relationship with planet earth. It is planned that the series will culminate in a conference, exhibition and publication.

Walking, one of the most basic of human activities has long been both inspiration and subject of exploration for artists. Walking is a central element and driving force in many art practices, in current writing, theoretical investigation, and curatorial projects. From the haikus of Basho to Baudelaire's theory of the " flâneur " to the current interest in psychogeography, walking continues to animate contemporary art practice.
Banff and the Rocky Mountains with its surrounding network of trails, history, and culture of walking, provide the ideal context for further exploration of this subject. MAIN GALLERY
In our main display space, we seek to balance exhibitions by Kingston-area artists with those by extra-regional artists. Proposals are selected according to: submission criteria determined by the Artistic Director and Modern Fuel's Programming Committee; their exploratory character – exploratory insofar as they pose significant questions (formally, conceptually and politically) within current artistic and broader socio-cultural contexts; and their ability to activate discussion and involvement of Modern Fuel's regional community.
ART IN THE STREETS
Art in the Streets programs aim to feature artworks in visual and time-based media that engage more assertively with the Kingston community-at-large. Proposals are selected based on their relevance to Kingston community politics and well-being and on their potential to stimulate interest within non-art and art audiences. Art in the Streets prioritizes the presentation of artworks that can develop a participatory discourse between artists and non-artists.

Emerging Canadian artists working in any medium and pursuing their practice on a professional basis are invited to answer Balcone's first annual call for submissions.
Balcone is a newly incorporated non-profit society for contemporary art based out of Vancouver . The vision is to create a unique context - outside of traditional frameworks - for the practice, curation, and exhibition of contemporary art in Vancouver and beyond. Balcone's mission is to support and promote emerging Canadian artists by focusing on curation, exhibition, research, criticism, and the development of a professional practice.
Twelve artists will be selected by Balcone's directors to participate and collaborate in the first year of programming. Accepted artists will have a hosted profile and portfolio on Balcone's website, will participate in a series of workshops and plenary sessions with the aim of accelerating professional development, and will be available for a group exhibition of new work from Balcone artists in Vancouver during September 2007. By mentoring, promoting and publishing these artists and their works, Balcone's directors aim to provide new territory for the support and development of emerging artists in Canada.

- curriculum vitae, recent, including full contact information and weblinks to show archives, if applicable
- artist statement, 500 words

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Women from all artistic communities are encouraged to apply, including film, dance, performance art, installation art, literature, theatre, music and all hybrids of any of the above.
We are seeking new creations as well as existing works by emerging and established artists from diverse cultural, sexual and artistic backgrounds.
Submissions may include (but are not limited to):

The Performance Mix Festival presents the developing work of over 30 experimental choreographers, composers and multi-disciplined artists annually in the Spring (dates, events and locations TBA). Choreographers are encouraged to collaborate with composers presenting original and live music and/or the use of video. Works proposed can be re-worked, in development and/or excerpts. Artists receive a fee, complimentary rehearsal space, video documentation, and eligibility to participate in the NDA Exchange and residency opportunities. Artists are selected by a panel of past participants headed by Director, Karen Bernard. Maximum length of work to be presented is generally 15 minutes, and shorter works are welcome.

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is requesting submissions from artists and curators for The LAB 2008/09 series. The LAB is a contemporary art space within the Art Gallery designed specifically for presenting challenging and dynamic experimental projects. The Gallery welcomes all forms of media, performance or innovative museological projects which involve the Gallery's permanent collection. Projects must be designed specifically for The LAB; existing projects will not be considered. Artists will receive exhibition fees as well as project assistance of up to $1500.
Proposals must include the following:
- A brief, one page description of the proposed project (400 words maximum)
- 10-20 slides or CD of related previous work
- Detailed budget (include any special equipment needs, travel fees and material costs to a maximum of $1500)
- Current cv

When designing your project proposal, please note that all elements of the space should be considered (ie exits and entrances, ceiling heights, lighting etc). When describing materials and elements, please address in your description their relationship to the overall ideas and concepts in the project. The Noise Miniatures miniature noise cdr record label is pleased to announce the launch a new series of SMALL SONG 3" cdr compilations. Each volume will be dedicated to a single theme (sometimes very broad, sometimes very specific), and will consist of variations on said theme. The artist is always encouraged to interpret the theme as they see fit.
Tracks submitted must be no longer than 1 minute and 30 seconds, and no other restrictions apply. Artists selected for inclusion will receive three (3) copies of the finished product. All copyrights will be retained by the artists and all editions will not exceed a run of 150 copies.

21. CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: spirituality and belief project (Toronto)

I'm an Image Arts student at Ryerson University and I'm doing a project about spirituality and belief. For the piece I am inviting pairs of people who have never met each other and are of different faiths/backgrounds/age groups and so on, to share a meal at my apartment and have a conversation about spirituality. I will photograph them together and video the process, hopefully the piece will be shown in the summer at the Contact photography festival.
I think this will be a great way for people establish a dialogue about the fundamental questions of why we exist and how we should live. Please pass this on to anyone you think may be interested, and don't worry about having a great deal of knowledge on the subject; what I am really interested in is people's feelings and opinions on these issues. The shoots will be over the next few weekends, starting this Saturday. Please contact me with your availability, and I will schedule you in with a conversation partner.

There has been much public discussion about issues surrounding appropriation art practices. CARFAC Ontario has been involved in productive dialogue with both Appropriation Art, Canadian Artists' Representation Copyright Collective (CARCC ) and CARFAC National.
We have also heard from a group of our members at the Annual General Meeting last September.
Now it is time to get your feedback. The survey has been put together with the assistance of CARCC and all of the information that you provide will remain anonymous. Some of the questions deal directly with the Canadian Copyright Act so it might make sense for you to check out some background information.
What is Appropriation?
To appropriate something involves taking possession of it. In the visual arts, the term appropriation often refers to the use of borrowed elements in the creation of new work. The borrowed elements may include images, forms or styles from art history or from popular culture, or materials and techniques from non-art contexts. Since the 1980s the term has also referred more specifically to quoting the work of another artist to create a new work. How does this differ from Cultural Appropriation?
Cultural appropriation is the adoption of some specific elements of one culture by a different cultural group. It denotes acculturation or assimilation, but often connotes a negative view towards acculturation from a minority culture by a dominant culture. It can include the introduction of forms of dress or personal adornment, music and art, religion, language, or social behavior. These elements, once removed from their indigenous cultural contexts, may take on meanings that are significantly divergent from, or merely less nuanced than, those they originally held. Or, they may be stripped of meaning altogether. As an example, a bindi dot when worn as a decorative item by a non-Hindu woman could be considered cultural appropriation, along with the use of henna in mehndi as a decoration outside traditional ceremonies.*

“in there” is an experimental process-based collaborative project involving 3 Toronto artists – Diane Borsato, Daniel Cockburn, and Kristan Horton – with 12 students from the dance, music and theatre departments at York University.
Over the 2006/2007 academic year, the artists and students have developed 3 innovative new works to be integrated into the Accolade East Building – the new home of the AGYU – activating the state-of-the art performing art spaces and the AGYU.

In the tradition of conceptual art instructions, and the possibility that non-virtuosic everyday movements can be dance, Diane Borsato led a large group of dancers to move a snowbank in white pails across the city, up to the AGYU. The absurd and heroic feat was accompanied by periodic outbursts of experimental trumpet music, composed and performed by Emilie LeBel. The buckets will then be
re-installed into an installation at the AGYU accompanied by video documentation of the snow move for the April 4 event.

LOST IN THE WOODS is best described as a short film arising from the “in there” collaboration. It combines documentary elements, restaged events, and artifacts of a production. In a way, it is neither a collaboration nor an individual work. The film is like a gathering together and restaging of certain events and ideas that took place during its course. In that sense, it is a meditation on how ideas might make their way to something more concrete like a play or a novel. “Lost in the Woods” will be screened in The Price Family Cinema (Accolade East Building Room #102) for the April 4 event.

The Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) is pleased to welcome internationally acclaimed artist Rirkrit Tiravanija as its first artist in residence of its new program Nomadic Residents.
Rirkrit Tiravanija, who graduated from OCAD in 1984, will take up residency in April 2007 with the opening of his first solo exhibition in Canada. During his residency, Tiravanija will participate in workshops with students, and present a public lecture. The exhibition launches OCAD's Professional Gallery, a new space dedicated to exhibiting work by nationally and internationally significant contemporary artists and designers.
Tiravanija is described by Guggenheim Museum Curator Joan Young as an artist who explores a new aesthetic paradigm of interactivity through contemporary art. His extraordinary and unconventional practice ranges from traditional art forms like drawing, painting and photography to site-specific installations which invite audiences to experience everyday activities such as cooking and serving food, or to 'living' within re-creations of Tiravanija's own apartment. He encompasses many innovations in his works such as creating radio plays and building power-generating systems, to demonstrate how viewers can become active media contributors and not simply passive consumers.
Born in Buenos Aires to Thai diplomats, Tiravanija was raised in Bangkok and Ethiopia. As an artist, he maintains a truly global art practice, with a studio in New York's East Village, a flat in Berlin, and a loft in Bangkok. Tiravanija exemplifies what New Yorker art critic Calvin Tomkins has termed "a new breed of nomadic, post-studio artist". At 19, Tiravanija came to Canada. He graduated from OCAD's Experimental Arts program in 1984, and later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Independent Study Program (New York City). In 2004, Tiravanija won the Hugo Boss Prize, one of the world's most recognized accolades for contemporary art. His recent solo exhibitions include 1301PE Gallery (Los Angeles), Le Musee d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris/ARC at the Couvent des Cordeliers (Paris), Serpentine Gallery (London, UK), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), Museum Bojmans Van Beuningen, (Rotterdam), and Ikon Gallery (Birmingham). In addition to teaching at Columbia University in New York, he recently participated in the 27a. Bienal de São Paulo and is currently Artistic Director of the major international contemporary art exhibition and cultural initiative 'Saigon Open City' in Vietnam.

Launching in April 2007 with international artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, OCAD's Professional Gallery is a new, 1200 square-foot space devoted to facilitating connections between, and the contemplation of, contemporary art and design practice.
"Tiravanija's practice is a perfect metaphor for the Professional Gallery's intentions," explained Charles Reeve, OCAD Curator. "He invites viewers to become active participants, thus fully animating the work." OCAD's Professional Gallery invites the community in to experience regional, national and international perspectives through art and design exhibitions, book launches, film screenings, performances, symposia, and more. "A key goal of the OCAD Professional Gallery is to be a leader in bringing art and design together, facilitating this kind of openness."

Nomadic Residents aims to inspire and influence the OCAD community by featuring artists from around the world whose work questions issues such as travel, mobility, displacement, dislocation, and homelessness, as well as the speed or instability of modern life. In bringing innovative and diverse artists to take up temporary residence at OCAD, Nomadic Residents will join here to there, the local to the global and the provisional and the permanent.
Nomadic Residents has been made possible through the support of Partners in Art whose generous efforts raise awareness of national and international art through exciting collaborative art projects.
