CALL FOR PROPOSALS: 1st Nagano International Communication Art Festival 1st Nagano international communication art festival: NICAF '07 Various art projects will be happen in Nagano-city for 5 days by around 8 artists from Japan and abroad. They will come some days before to have real research how their art project should happen here. Art have any solution for today's social problem? The hollowing out of the city. Car center society. Aging society. The dilapidation of the education. Natural education and peace education. The issue of bullying. An environmental problem. Global warming. The fall of morals. The loss of the public awareness. The increase of the sense of estrangement of human relations. The increase of the suicide. The increase of the crime. Rise of the nationalism. The lack of the international sense. The rise of the big business and the extinction of the medium size or small size retail store. We started Nagano International Performance Art Festival (NIPAF) in 1993 and started Nagano International video Art Festival (NIVAF) in 2006 last year. These festivals will explore immediately to other town. So first Nagano, then to Nippon (Japan). Specially NIPAF (Nippon International Performance Art Festival) has 15 years history and already invited more than 300 foreign artists from 45 countries to our 2 annual festivals in several cities in Japan. NIPAF has also tour in abroad very often to develop this art medium exchange. We get internationally high reputation now. NIVAF did started in last year with small budget, but it showed new meaning of video Art which is now closed private expression medium with cheap video equipment. New video art works came from Central Europe, Central and South America and Asia which area we have not enough informations. In addition, we are doing "Media Art Study Meeting" and "Mobile Gallery Project" to study and practice of contemporary art with very unique viewpoint. So now we have our new challenge festival "1st Nagano International Communication Art Festival: NICAF '07". This new festival's aim is how art projects which has social contact will effect in small town like Nagano. Population is less than half million town, no contemporary art gallery and no art university. Nagano has a famous big Buddhism temple and people are generally conservative. But a capital town of Nagano prefecture having enough social structure,with good nature, mountain area, was the host of Winter Olympic games 1998. Now in Japan, Artists In Residence (AIR) programs are increased and most of them has rich enough original building. They carry out active activity. But this festival is depend on very poor condition that is the same as almost all local town in Japan. We expect this festival will show some good suggestion how contemporary art view point will be popular in local town, not only Nagano. The participant will be selected after their proposal. We are sorry our budget is very tight, but we hope it will be done successfully for our future project. The same program will be presented in Madrid in April 2008 and in Berlin in June 2008. The festival reflects specificities and crossings of art practices between new cinema and contemporary art, explores media art practices and their critical purposes, and work out this necessary time when points of view meet and are exchanged. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Intimacy: Across Visceral and Digital Performance INTIMACY will take place on the 7th, 8th and 9th December in and around Goldsmiths University of London, LABAN and The Albany (South London). INTIMACY is a three-day interdisciplinary programme of events made to illicit connectivity, induce interaction and provoke debate between makers, participants and witnesses of works that explicitly address proximity and hybridity in performance. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Images Festival Operations Manager (Toronto) The Images Festival is seeking applications for the position of Operations Manager. The Images Festival, based in Toronto and now in its 21st year, features Canadian and international film and video and related new media, installations and live performances. This 10-day festival combines theatrical exhibitions with gallery-based media art installations and features symposia, artistsí retrospectives, special curated programs and publications alongside its annual competition selection of artist film and video. Images is a dynamic annual forum for excellence and innovation in the media arts. The Images Festival, Canadaís largest exhibitor of independent media art, is currently seeking an Operations Manager. The Operations Manager will work in a collaborative environment to plan and execute a successful 2008 Festival (April 3-12, 2008) involving multiple exhibition sites and events, and public, corporate and community partners. This is a year round position reporting to the Executive Director. CALL FOR ENTRIES: International Prize for Performance, 3rd Edition 1. The Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea of Trento, in collaboration with centrale FIES, with the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio of Trento and Rovereto, and Regione Trentino Alto Adige announce the third edition of the International Prize for Performance. 2. The Prize is reserved for young artists, or groups of artists, of all nationalities, who have been born from January 1st, 1972. 3. Among those who intend to participate, 12 (twelve) finalists will be selected to present a performance on the evenings of October 5th and 6th, 2007 at the Centrale di Fies (Dro, Trento). 4. The first prize is fixed at 5,000 (five thousand) euros (net) and can not be divided. There will also be minor prizes awarded. 5. All artists of all nationalities and origins, from all formative backgrounds (visual arts, dance, music, poetry, etc.) are invited to participate by sending an application, in electronic format, to performance@galleriacivica.it, which can be downloaded at the Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporaneaís internet site, www.workartonline.net. Participants may also send: Together the materials must not exceed 5 Mb (five Megabites). 6. The original, never before seen performances can be any length of time. They may not exceed 20 (twenty) minutes whenever the performance is narrative, valued entirely on its development. The performances can be extensive in length, as long as the concept can be understood without needing to be viewed in its entirety. It is also possible to present a project of more than one performance wherever the total length will not exceed 20 (twenty) minutes. The performance can be conducted by the artists in first person, or with the aid of actors, musicians or other personnel. They can also involve the public or take place without the physical presence of people. It is also possible to utilize video or other technical devices; however, performances composed solely of video or video installations are excluded. 7. Among all the projects presented using this criteria, the organization will select 12 (twelve) artists to present their projects during the final evenings. 8. The first prize winner and the grantees of minor prizes will be named by an international jury, after having been present at the performances finals on October 5th and 6th, 2007. The international jury is composed of Jimmie Durham, (artist, Jury President), Giacinto Di Pietrantonio (art critic and Artistic Director of Galleria di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea of Bergamo), Rune Gade (Associate Professor at Department of Arts and Cultural Studies, University of Copenhagen), An-Marie Lambrechts (Artistic Director of Toneelhuis Theater, Antwerp), David Weinstein (Director of Programs of P.S.1, New York), Barbara Boninsegna (Artistic Director of drodesera FIES), Fabio Cavallucci (Artistic Director of Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea di Trento). The jury will stabilize the criteria for the selections before the beginning of the competition. In the case that jury members are unable to participate, proper measure will be followed. 9. The participants in the final selections are guaranteed travel expenses and hospitality for the time necessary for the realization of their performances. Production costs will be sustained directly by the organization. The relationship between the final effect and the economic commitment required for the production of the performance will be an assessable element in identifying the finalists. The specific request for actors or other possible personnel eventually involved in the performance will be organized by the artist or group. 10. At Gallery 1313 works by Jacqueline Treloar (Main Gallery) and Gerry Richards (Cell Gallery) in the Process Gallery and one of the Video Installations. Queen Street and Cowan Avenue - Movement Performance with pkto (Parkour Toronto) and contemporary dance. An enormous spotlight will beckon visitors. Media Tent / Refresh Zone / Hospitality Zone - Visitors will find a Media Tent/Refresh Zone in the Green P city parking lot just west of Cowan and Queen Streets. Part performance part reality. The Media Zone will be a tented area with the projecting of images from different feeds of other areas of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche. At the Refresh Zone tired visitors weary from their Nuit Blanche travels will sign up for a rest on one of 35 hygienic cots (for a 5 minute rest - timed - alarm clocks). They may be given water and have their passport stamped. At the media area video feeds of other Nuit Blanche events will be projected. A newsletter with Nuit Blanche updates will be printed every three hours and media will also get a chance to rest up and trade stories. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Catalyst Arts Annual Members Show 2007 (Ireland) Exhibition opens 28th Sept, running until 12th October The annual members show is an important part of Catalystís year. It allows the whole membership base to exhibit work ñ a good opportunity for less established artists and valuable for our future programme. This is also the only time that Catalyst directors can submit their own work for show in the gallery. Our membership consists of artists with widely varied practices and stages of career. The exhibition canít but reflect this, putting Catalystís curatorial skills to the test and providing a richly diverse exhibition. As a result of this diversity, the opening night is often the most fruitful part of the exhibition, one of those occasions that emphasize Catalystís reputation as a place where people meet, collectives form and things generally begin to happen. UrbanFestival is an international multimedia festival of contemporary art in urban public spaces and its core objective is to have art permeate city life, intensify the interaction between the city, along with all of its infrastructure, and its residents. Ever since it started in 2001, UrbanFestival has been concerned with the public and public space in particular, not only in terms of its thematic focus and program selection but also in terms of its unique organizational forms and experimentation. By deliberately stepping outside the ivory towers of art galleries and theaters, we have been attempting to widen the scope of our activity and bring to life the public space as a place of coexistence and juxtaposition of divergent points of view, even potential antagonism. In the age of representational culture and a growing number of festivals, UrbanFestival has been designed more as a platform, a place for experiment, a structure that should be able to respond to local needs and intervene in the immediate context. We have decided to replace the conception of the city as a place whose existence is independent of its built-in structures and practices, a place of regulation of the everyday, an expression of the state power or of the ruthlessness of capital, with a political understanding of the city - the city, as a place that is constantly being reinvented by the practices of its residents. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Independent Creative Art Spaces Leadership Training (Paris, France) Artists Networks and Autonomous Cultural Centers Organizers: Asia Europe Foundation, Artfactories Trans Europe Halles Open Call for Applications Independent Creative Art Spaces Leadership Training is part of the Artistsí Networks and Autonomous Cultural Centers, an initiative set up by ASEF (www.asef.org) in 2003 aiming to contribute to the promotion of artistsí mobility, exchange of cultural professionals and exposure for cultural practitioners. Implemented in partnership with artist-run-spaces, autonomous cultural centers and/or artistsí networks, the projects aim at encouraging discussions on issues such as cultural management strategies, contemporary artistic practices and to be a launch pad for eventual future collaborations between Asia and Europe. This five-day intensive workshop shall concentrate on the role and importance of the artists/manager in multi-disciplinary Independent Creative Art Spaces. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Suspension Performance (Toronto) Seeking performers, videographers and photographers for street-level performances to be staged late-summer 2007 in downtown Toronto. During morning rush hour in the financial district, supported by ropes around their midsections, performers will lean at odd angles into pedestrian traffic. Crowds will form to observe, photograph and wonder. After five minutes the ropes will be released and the performers will fall to the ground, collect themselves and disappear into the bustle. A minimum of four performance/documentation teams are needed for this happening. This follows a successful single-team Suspension performance in November 2006. About Us MARKETING is a performance art collective based in Toronto Canada who stage non confrontational performances for audiences traditionally underexposed to the form. EVENT (Zurich): stromereien 07 Performance Festival Performance in the urban landscape: the stromereien-festival - initiated by the Tanzhaus Zurich - takes place every other summer. The human body in motion in the urban landscape is the main focus of this festival. The performing artists occupy the urban area around the Tanzhaus Zurich. Its industrial past, the mixture of natural and man-made landscapes, the river banks, the public bath and the former railway viaduct offer many niches, which wait to be discovered by both the artists and the audience. Three months prior to the festival, all participating artists, national and international, are invited to Zurich for a weekend. The purpose of this meeting is to pick suitable spots for the performances and to discuss the projects and site specific performance art in general. On Now! EVENT (Hamilton, Ontario): Naufus Figueroa and Irene Loughlin You and Me Gallery present Naufus Figueroa and Irene Loughlin Many thanks to Bryce Kanbara of You and Me Gallery, and the Ontario Arts Council for their support of this project. http://www.youmegallery.ca Muxux Uleu (Navel of the Earth) A Performance in Honour of the Ancestors of Hamilton Naufus Figueroa will be performing a process-based piece inspired by the stories of his grandfather, Simeon de la Cruz, who was a ceremonial dancer and active figure in the life of the Quiche and Ladino community of Joyabaj, Guatemala. The piece is based on research conducted in the summer of 2006 in Guatemala, speaking to people who used to dance with his great grandfather and is being re-conceptualized to address Figueroa's relation to Hamilton as a site rich with public and personal history. Nauf™s Figueroa is a Guatemalan-Canadian installation, video, and performance artist. His work looks at various subjects, including racial violence, exile, ghosts, childhood, and ritual. Nauf™s Figueroa's work has been disseminated within various artist run centres, institutions, and non-traditional art spaces. Past works include Doing Other People's Cleaning (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba 2004), The Sun is Crooked in the Sky (FADO, Toronto 2005), Colour is Emptiness (Vancouver Art Gallery, 2005), and Fatherland (Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, Germany 2007). Nauf™s Figueroa is also a 2007 recipient of the Franklin Furnace Performance Art Fund. Grieving/separated from Ayles Ice Shelf The performance grieving/separated from Ayles Ice Shelf is an interdisciplinary work based on the recent separation of the Ayles Ice Shelf, which has snapped free from an island just south of the North Pole. The work relays some of the frustration and futility felt by the individual body when facing the fact of global warming and its consequences. Irene Loughlin is an interdisciplinary artist who is interested in ecological local/global issues and related strategies of resilience and regeneration. She works with the mediums of performance art, video and installation towards furthering an investigation of these themes. She lives and works in Hamilton, Ontario. |
