FADO NEWS: Call for curatorial proposals from emerging curators for Fado’s annual Emerging Artists Series (2008-09)
Date: February 15, 2008 (postmarked)

CALL FOR CURATORIAL PROPOSALS for Fado’s 2008-09 Emerging Artists Series
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: postmarked February 15, 2008

Toronto...Fado announces a national call for curatorial proposals for its 2008-09 Emerging Artist Series.

Fado’s Emerging Artists Series was inaugurated in 2003 by artist and educator Tanya Mars to develop, encourage and create an opportunity for new and emerging performance artists to present their work. Each year the Emerging Artists series is curated by a young curator chosen either through research or a regional call for curatorial submissions. The chosen curator works in a mentoring relationship with the Director of Fado.

Emerging Artists Series has traditionally presented the work of local artists from Toronto and surrounding areas (due in part to budget constraints and the shear size of the show – usually encompassing 6-10 artists). However, we are interested in expanding the scope of this annual series and working with curators and artists from other provinces (in a mixed program of artists from Ontario) in order to experience the kind of work emerging artists are doing in other sectors of the Canadian performance art community, and provide a context for the kind of work being done here at home.

Please note that this is a national call for submissions. While we appreciate the scope of work that being undertaken in many different parts of the world, this series strives to offer an opportunity and a venue to local and national emerging artists (international submissions and international artists cannot be considered). We appreciate ambitious endeavors, however, please remember that in order for your submission to be seriously considered, it must adhere to the vision of the project, and be realistic and achievable.

Artist fees are paid to each participating artist. The series curator receives a curatorial honorarium.

Please visit our website for to see the archive of Emerging Artists Series.

7. EVENT: Linda Montano and Paul McMahon in Woodstock, NY
Date: December 8, 2007; Source: Franklin Furnace

project inc. at the woodstock mothership presents:

LINDA MONTANO AS PAUL McMAHON
DECEMBER 8, 2007 5-8 PM

Montano's performance will take place in the gallery at the Woodstock Mothership on the last day of McMahon's current show, "I GIVE THANKS FOR MY WONDERFUL LIFE."  Linda Montano recently performed as Bob Dylan in “I DREAMED THAT BOB DYLAN THOUGHT HE WAS LINDA M. MONTANO” in the window of Alternative Books in Kingston, NY. Linda M. Montano, a seminal figure in contemporary feminist performance art, has been actively exploring her art/life since the mid 1960s. Her work investigates the relationship between art and life through intricate life altering ceremonies, some of which last for seven or more years. She is interested in the way artistic ritual, often staged as individual interactions or collaborative workshops, can be used to alter and enhance a person's life and to create the opportunity for focus on spiritual energy states, silence and the cessation of art/life boundaries.

For more about Montano go to http://www.bobsart.org/
Paul McMahon's show is open by appointment at 845-679-3392 or 8100.

12. ANNOUNCING: FRAME residency at CAPACETE in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Date: December 19, 2007; Source: Henna Harri

The Residency is offered by FRAME Finnish Fund for Art Exchange and CAPACETE  to provide an opportunity for a Finnish artist to spend three months developing new work in Rio de Janeiro. The program for 2008 is from August to December and the residency period of three months can be agreed with CAPACETE as best suited for the artist.

CAPACETE entertainments initiated its activities already in 1998 under the name Espaço P, later joining forces with AGORA and becoming what it is today. Its activities are part of a long term interdisciplinary presence in Rio de Janeiro, which aims to research and document aesthetic, social and political processes in Brazil. In this, the city of Rio de Janeiro is a strategic tool to identify, articulate and give visibility to these processes, reaching very heterogeneous audiences.

CAPACETE has offered a residency program since 2000 and has been working with artist-in-residency exchanges with FRAME and HIAP since 2003. CAPACETE develops its program through a variety of strategies, yet its main purpose is to exhibit and produce previously unseen conceptual and contextual works. It documents its activities and provides a platform for the artist’s production by making it available to the public. CAPACETE is primarily interested in the ‘space’ that exists between the art gallery and the city in the multiple manifestations of its urban history and considers it important to define and create new languages in written, visual or spoken forms, and thus transform the urban environment into an historic circuit of personal experience.

The 3 month residency incorporates:

-Sharing accommodation with another artist in a house near CAPACETE office; including a communal kitchen, a common space for reading and some basic items of furniture. All living expenses like water, cooking gas, electricity are included.
-Pre-paid mobile phone.
-Access to other areas such as the residency spaces for two more artists
-A studio space at CAPACETE office if necessary.
-Broadband connection in all places; access to CAPACETE artist archives and computer, scanner and other equipment
-Artist’s fee of 2.250 € (750 € / month)
-There are no laundry facilities at CAPACETE but a launderette is very close-by

How to apply: Application and supporting material

In addition to an informal application, including a project description, candidates should submit a Curriculum Vitae, artist’s statement and any material relevant to the concept of the project; such as initial ideas, a body of work or series of concerns raising from their current practice, and suitable for development during the residency. Artists applying should also demonstrate how they will benefit from the residency. All documents should be written in English.

In order to apply for this opportunity the candidate must be a Finnish citizen or an artist based in Finland.

The Deadline for completed applications is on Wednesday the 19th of December 2007. The application should be addressed to FRAME, Merimiehenkatu 36 D 527, 00150 Helsinki, Finland. The applicants will be informed of the results in late January.

13. EVENT: Rightfully Yours
Dates: November 16 – December 16, 2007; Source: artpost

Rightfully Yours,

With works by: Wendy Coburn, Steven Cohen, Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan, Alicia Framis, Alison S.M. Kobayashi, Mingering Mike, Mattias Olofsson, The Yes Men, Camille Turner, Sislej Xhafa, Your personal viewing of Borat, Ali G, and Bruno
Curated by Tejpal Singh Ajji, Curator-in-Residence

Rightfully Yours, considers performative insertions into daily activities implicated in the politics and ethics of institutions, professions, sexuality, and nationalism. The artists included in the exhibition avoid the theatrical stage, choosing instead the public realm— a site regulated by laws, cooperation with official structures, and the suspicions of other civilians. ‘Common knowledge’ about their chosen location is subverted through public performance, adopting the legitimizing power of graphic design, and enhancing the social function of everyday objects. Sneaking into the Venice Biennale dressed as a soccer player and challenging visitors to games of skill; overlooking the Canadian hinterland as rangers examining the sexual regimentation of scientific knowledge; questioning the right to represent nationality through the figure of the beauty queen, these artists dissemble known positions and open them up for reevaluation.

Rightfully Yours, considers the practices, approaches and presentation models employed by artists who use the transformative qualities of a ‘strategic self’. The strategic self is a specific attitude and working model taken from a lived situation and history. This becomes the artist’s subject and can involve the assumption of the appearance of professionalism through the adoption of its tropes and infiltration of organisational structures. These performative actions present an image critical in understanding the local politics, attitudes and divisions of specific locations.
