Fado and Art Metropole are pleased to announce the launch of Ironic to Iconic: The Performance Works of Tanya Mars, a new book about Canadian performance art legend and Art Metropole lifetime member, Tanya Mars. Mars recently received The Governor General's Award for Visual and Media Arts. Ironic to Iconic: The Performance Works of Tanya Mars is a comprehensive look at the artist's career, from the 1970s to the present. The book features extensive photo documentation and includes a DVD documenting her site-specific work, Tyranny of Bliss (2004). Paul Couillard, the former director of FADO and editor of the book, sums up the importance of the artist's work: "Mars has relentlessly shown us that the best way to the jugular is through the funny bone, creating a series of compelling 'three-dimensional pictures' that have made her one of Canada's most acclaimed and important performance artists."
Ironic to Iconic: The Performance Works of Tanya Mars includes contributions by Couillard, Tagny Duff, Jennifier Fisher, Randy Gledhill, Nelson Henricks, Will Kwan, Paul Ledoux, Joanna Nash, Jennifer Oille, Pam Patterson & John Oughton, Andrew James Paterson, Kim Sawchuck and Dot Tuer.
Tanya Mars is a feminist, performance and video artist who has been involved in the Canadian art scene since 1973. She was a founding member and director of Powerhouse Gallery (La Centrale), in Montreal, the first women's art gallery in Canada; editor of Parallelogramme magazine for 13 years; and very active in ANNPAC (the Association of National Non-Profit Artist-run Centres), for 15 years. Her work is often characterized as visually-rich layers of spectacular, satirical feminist imagery. She has performed widely across Canada, in Valparaiso (Chile), Helsinki and Sweden. Her most recent major work, a 7-hour durational performance entitled "The Tyranny of Bliss" involved over 30 performers who created 14 tableaux in-and-around Queens' Park, Toronto. She is co-editor, with Johanna Householder, of Caught in the Act: an anthology of performance art by Canadian women (2004), published by YYZ Books. She is also a member of the 7a*11d Collective which produces a bi-annual international festival of performance art in Toronto. She currently teaches performance art and video at the University of Toronto at Scarborough, and is part of the graduate faculty at the University of Toronto. In 2004, she was named Artist of the Year by the Untitled Arts Awards in Toronto. She received The Governor General's Award for Visual and Media Arts in 2008. In the autumn of 2008, she will be the Canada Council's International Artist in Residence in Paris, France.

7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art is pleased to co-present A Crime Against Art at the 15th Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival (April 17- 27, 2008)
C-SPAN meets the art scene in A Crime Against Art. This film is based on a "trial" staged at an art fair in Madrid in February 2007, which in turn was inspired by the mock trials organized by André Breton in the 1920s and '30s. All raise a number of polemical issues in the world of contemporary art: collusion with the "new bourgeoisie," instrumentalization of art and its institutions, the future possibility of artistic agency and other pertinent topics. Filmmaker Hila Peleg's trial begins with the assumption that a crime has been committed, yet its nature and evidence are allusive and no victims have come forward. The testimonies and cross-examinations become an attempt by the Judge to unravel the nature of the mysterious "crime against art." Set as a television courtroom drama and filmed by four camera crews, the six-chapter serial presents a condensed version of the trial. Directed by Hila Peleg, Germany, 100 mins.

Tamar Raban, Guy Gutman, Efrat Ben-David, Alia Meyer and Hili FridbergA performance structured around random words derived from the linguistic milieu of food and cooking and that begin with the letters that make up the term PERFORMANCE. Action, object, image, word, and sound, all contribute to create a rich, unexpected text. Food products, dishes, and cooking utensils change their role throughout the piece to create a new, poetic "dish."

The ninth annual Visualeyez…festival of performance art taking place from July 18-28, 2008 in the downtown core of Edmonton, Alberta with the curatorial theme of Justice.Focusing upon the broad interpretation of Justice, this theme has deliberately been left wide open to the interpretation of artists and collectives. This will include such aspects as social justice, ecological, racial, economical, retributive justice, distributive justice, justice as virtue, and justice as harmony.Visualeyez happens over a period of ten days and all invited artists should be prepared to attend for the entire length of the festival. Artists experience the work of other artists, engage in discussion groups, panels and other activities that enhance the work of individual artists and the performance art community within Canada and beyond.
Proposals should include:
-a CV and artist statement;
-a detailed description of the work you wish to present, or explore;
-support material (that can include slides, video, print or digital documentation of your work, catalogues, and press). If you would like your materials returned to you, please also include a self-addressed stamped envelope with sufficient postage. Artists shall be contacted within one month regarding the status of their proposals.

TAMA 2008, the Tupada Action and Media Art Fifth International Action Art Event titled TUPADA REVOLT begins on April 25, 2008, Friday at 1:00 pm., with performances by local and international artists at the Kanlungan ng Sining, Luneta Park. The event then travels to Dagupan City for simultaneous action art events in CSI the City Mall, City Plaza and Bonuan Tondaligan Beach from April 28 to May 1, 2008.
Tupada started in 2002 with ambush performances by artists from diverse disciplines in various public spaces, exposing the masses to creative articulation where they themselves were located on an overpass, in open parks, streets, cafes, beach and alternative art spaces. It has since grown into an art collective organizing international performance events, creating connections with local and foreign artists in the spirit of meaningful cultural and information exchange, and melding concepts, directions and personalities together to create an independent ground for art expressing concerns.

Our May program also includes the Chinese artist Yingmei Duan who will make a performance on the 23rd, 24th and 25th of May.
Yingmei Duan (b. 1969), lives and works in Braunschweig in Germany. Her long durational site-specific performances and performance installations deal with vulnerability and often challenge social conventions around the private vs the public. After her studies in China she moved to germany in 1996 and finished her Post-Master studies in 2006 with Marina Abramovic, Birgit Hein and Christoph Schlingensief at the HBK (Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste Braunschweig).Since 1993 she has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, festivals and workshops, e.g. Braziers International Artists Workshop in England 2003, 1st Performance festival in Salzau 2005, etc. Likewise she has taken part of multiples exhibitions from the IPG (Independent Performance Group), curated by Marina Abramovic, e.g. PAC Milan 2003, Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam 2005 and at the Venice Biennale 2007.

greetings all
after some years of discussion with many of you, i have decided to attempt the launch of a magazine devoted to international performance art activities. the publication will be infrequent initially, and I hope will eventually lead to a regular and dependable version. it will be comprised entirely of contributions from people like you and dependent on those contributions in order to exist.
here are the basic parameters;
-there is a great online publishing resource based here in the US called lulu.com
they are an online publishing house that allows you to have books and magazines printed in any quantity and charge anywhere between $4 and $20 per copy depending on length and design. they also have a feature that allows anyone to download an electronic version of any publication for free or cheap.
-i will collect related writings, images, information from various sources and compile this material into a multi-page document/magazine. items will only be edited to accommodate space and layout as needed.
-people will then be able to purchase a copy of the magazine directly from the publishers website, or be able to download an electronic version for free from that same location.the idea is that one person takes on the responsibility for collecting and compiling information about activities in the field in a mostly open format, and then makes that compilation available to whoever wants it. i will provide this service, if others provide the content.the only theme of each issue will be the medium of performance as a contemporary art form, and the submissions should be timely. in other words, writings or contributions for an upcoming issue should be about recent or relevant activities. of course older things will also be accepted, but i would guess that more current things would be preferred by most readers.suggestions on things to submit; descriptions and images of a recent work you presented or saw presented, information about upcoming or recent exhibitions and festivals along with details on the participating artists, excerpts from other recently published writings on the subject, sketches and/or studio work related to a piece you are developing, theory or research you have compiled on the subject etc. etc. etc.its quite open, and needs only to be related to the field of performance art to be included. most importantly, it absolutely does not need to be presented in what you may consider to be a typical or acceptable magazine or publication style. just send me things you want to be included and they will be plugged in accordingly.texts/writings can be submitted in any language, and they will be printed in the language they are sent in.
the first deadline for the inaugural issue is JUNE 30, 2008.
all materials for consideration should be submitted by no later than that date. suggestions for a name of the magazine are also being solicited for at this time. please offer one or more. all materials should also include how you wish credit for the material you submit to be listed (especially with photos that you did not personally take)i don't know how far this will go, can't even promise that a first issue will happen. the content is dependent on the desire for something like this to exist. if there is desire, then content will come naturally. i would like to think that there is more going on out there with performance than many of us realize and a compilation of all those unseen strands and branches could be exciting and inspiring and give many working with performance in obscurity an opportunity to connect to a community.please spread this call for content around as much as you like, and feel free to translate into other languages. your contributions are greatly appreciated.

CPR - Center for Performance Research is located at 361 Manhattan Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and will offer a singular new development for the performing arts in Brooklyn's first L.E.E.D.-certified green building of its kind. This 4000 square foot arts facility is targeted for completion in January, 2008, and is an-artist driven initiative co-founded by Jonah Bokaer/Chez Bushwick, Inc. and John Jasperse/Thin Man Dance, Inc. This new development aims to provide affordable space for rehearsal and performance, innovative arts programming, education and pedagogical engagement with the communities of New York City and abroad, as well as a dynamic new model for sustainable arts infrastructure in dance and performance. During a real estate climate that threatens to displace the arts from maintaining permanent and affordable space in New York City, CPR offers a pioneering approach to both civic development and fortification for dance and performance at the community level.Center for Performance Research is the result of artistic vision and market forces coming together. The two founding organizations’ on-going commitment to providing outstanding resources to performing artists in order to foster the development, research, and presentation of new work plays a central role. This is met with the innovative desire on the part of a developer to harness the vibrancy of the real estate market to support the local arts community. Developer Derek Denckla/Propeller Group, and Gregory Merryweather/Architect have envisioned the building to be located at 361 Manhattan Avenue, which they named Greenbelt, as a mixed-use residential and commercial condominium that will house a non-profit community arts facility on the ground floor. Greenbelt approached John Jasperse about joining the project; Jasperse subsequently approached Jonah Bokaer/Chez Bushwick, Inc., who had previous plans to launch a capital campaign toward the formation of a permanent facility. The resulting partnership formed CPR – Center for Performance Research. Furthermore, Greenbelt is registered to be certified as a L.E.E.D. Gold project, the first private green development to do so in Brooklyn. With this in mind, CPR will bind together a commitment to the sustainability of community arts organizations with the environment of New York City, offering a benchmark approach to urban planning for the arts. The project has also been nominated for a 2007 MASter Award from the Municipal Arts Society.
