1. EVENT: FADO Performance Art Centre presents Sinead O’Donnell & Hugh O’Donnell

Date: Friday February 26, 2010

Spotlight on Belfast: Sinead O’Donnell & Hugh O’Donnell

Friday February 26 @ 7:30PM

Toronto Free Gallery (1277 Bloor Street West)  $5 / PWYC

www.performanceart.ca

FADO Performance Art Centre is pleased to present an evening of new works from two of N. Ireland’s rising generation of performance artists, Sinead O’Donnell and Hugh O’Donnell.

Sinead O’Donnell has been creating performance, installation, site and time-based art since 1998. Encountering a place's territoriality, and frequently referencing Ireland, Sinead chooses actions or situations that demonstrate complexity, setting up confrontations between matter and memory, timing and spontaneity, site and space, and intuition and methodology. Sinead O’Donnell is based in Belfast, N. Ireland and her performance work has been presented in Ireland, South America, Middle East and Eastern Europe. This will be Sinead’s first performance in Toronto.

Hugh O'Donnell’s has been creating installation, video and performance works since receiving his MFA in Fine Art from the University of Ulster. His performance practice is informed by drawing, found and made objects. Often of an auto-personal nature, O’Donnell’s work is material-based and conceptual, and is concerned with notions of gender and sexuality.  Hugh O’Donnell is based in Belfast, N. Ireland and his performance work has been exhibited in Ireland and internationally in Switzerland, Serbia, Romania and Quebec City. Currently he works with Bbeyond, a Belfast based performance organization established to preserve and promote performance art exchanges within Ireland/N. Ireland and abroad. This will be Hugh’s first performance in Toronto.

3. EVENT: (Being) One Thing At a Time: Performance Photos by Victoria Stanton

Date: January 21 – March 1, 2010; Source: Victoria Stanton

Corrid’Art de Compagnie F Presents (BEING) ONE THING AT A TIME
An exhibition of Performance Photos by Victoria Stanton

January 21 to March 1, 2010

Vernissage Thursday January 21, 5 to 7pm
The TouVA Collective (Sylvie Tourangeau, Victoria Stanton and Anne Bérubé) will present a short, performative action on the evening of the vernissage.

“The (Being) One Thing at a Time” photo series came out of Victoria Stanton’s interest in responding specifically to a selection of public sites across the island of Montreal. Initiated in 2003, and carried out until 2008, artists and non-artists alike were invited to join her in creating contemporary living tableaux through the performance of meditative, physical actions that would subtly impress upon the urban landscape and surrounding architecture. Proposing to open up a dialogue between the body and the spaces it traverses, Stanton attempted to impose slightly transgressive, collective actions – bewildering (or questionable) gestures in unexpected, or just plain banal places.

Victoria Stanton (Montreal, Canada) is a performance artist, video-maker, photographer, and writer of fiction, poetry, critical texts, and songs. Her time-based work includes performance for stage, actions in public spaces, and one-on-one, relational encounters in intimate contexts. She has presented performances, interventions, and videos in Canada, the U.S., Europe, the U.K., Australia and Japan. Her creative and critical writings have been published in Canadian and American anthologies and art/literary/lifestyle magazines. She is the co-author with Vincent Tinguely of Impure: Reinventing the Word (conundrum press, 2001) and is currently working on a new book with the TouVA Collective (comprised of Anne Bérubé, Sylvie Tourangeau and Stanton) on the practice of performance within a Canadian/Québecois context.

“Time-based practice is what propels my artistic research and while I have performed within a large variety of contexts, with many recent projects taking the form of site-specific public intervention, I am primarily wishing to investigate the ability – and the desire – to hold a space, to appropriate and disrupt the quotidian, to create spontaneous intimacy, to tread vulnerability. Investing a performative presence and consciousness with multiple spaces/times, my performance work continuously underscores the complex aspects of ‘transaction’ and the possibility for transformation.”

Victoria Stanton would like to thank: the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec; photographers SB Edwards, Aaron McKenzie Fraser, Martin Savoie, Phil Chee, Mike Hickey and David Jhave Johnston; all the performance participants and the Centre SAGAMIE (technician Etienne Fortin).

5. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: FIMA 11TH Edition

Deadline: February 5, 2010; Source: Marie-Chantal Scholl

FIMA - 11th edition

July 1-11, 2010

FIMA (Festival International Montréal en Arts) is inviting multidisciplinary artists in performance and/or installation to submit a project for its performance art chapter, called

Contemporary Experiences at THE FIMA...

FIMA is an arts festival that occupies the street every summer. It is taking place in the heart of downtown Montreal, on the famous St. Catherine Street, between St. Hubert and Papineau. For 11 days, over 200 artists and artisans meet the public on the street and in a big top called Gallery Space. Live arts are a great part of the festival, with numerous performance art interventions, live demonstrations and multimedia performances. Each year, the FIMA welcomes almost 100 000 visitors daily (from Thursday to Sunday).

The Contemporary Experiences consist of a series of creations and contemporary artistic initiatives that guide the public into concrete psychological and/or physical experiences that are stimulating, unsettling and surprising. Its second edition, in 2009, was the festival's most popular event. An interesting advantage for performance and installation artists of contemporary style is that they can have a direct access to a very wide public of wandering adults (mostly), diversified, relaxed and curious, but not necessarily familiar with performance art and/or installation. It is an experience for you as much as for them.

LE FIMA OFFERS YOU...

-A promotional partnership (description of your performance in the program, on the Web site, in the press release, indications on site, etc.)

-On-site support (technical manager)

-Technical equipment (basic audiovisual material)

-Welcome desk service and security

-Possibility of transportation and housing for artists from out-of-town

A comment book is made available for the public. The comments are transcribed and sent to the artists after the event. Each performance will be subject to a signed contract.

YOUR PROJECT

We favour interactive material and interventions, actions, minimalist stagings, interactive installations, strange, awkward and even disturbing performances. We are open to poetic action and physical art. Multimedia projects are welcome. Keep in mind that this is taking place outdoors, in the street, in a "fair type" environment, at the heart of a local and touristic summer event.

THE VENUES

Three performance spaces are at your disposition:

-St. Catherine Street itself

-In a tent (with access to electricity and the possibility to be opened or closed)

-an industrial container (decorative possibilities and access to electricity)

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

-Detailed description of the project (1,000 words maximum)

-The resume and/or bio of each participating artist, and a summary of the company's history, as the case may be.

-A technical estimate

-Artist fee(s)

-The full contact information of project manager, technical director, etc.

-Any relevant material (synopsis, extract, DVD, photos, etc.)

All applications must be sent by February 5th, 2010, at the following address:

SPDAC / FIMA

Marie-Chantal Scholl

576 St.Catherine Street East, Suite 211

Montreal (Quebec) H2L 2E1

If you wish to redeem your material, please include a pre-stamped and self-addressed envelope. It is also possible to send your application by email: mchantal@festivaldesarts.org

All applicants (with a completed submission) will receive an answer starting February 20th, 2010. Selection will be done according to the mandate and artistic orientation of the Contemporary Experiences. Priority will be given to simple and original propositions.

If you have questions or comments, please write us at mchantal@festivaldesarts.or and visit our Web site at www.festivaldesarts.org.

6. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Dare-Dare

Deadline date: February 15, 2010; Source: Jannick Rousseau

With Dis/location: projet d'articulation urbaine, DARE-DARE established a framework for research and presentation of contextual and public art practices. This urban exploration is achieved through successive moorings of socially and politically rich projects within the City of Montreal. Thus, since 2004, the mandate of DARE-DARE has been to promote interventions in the urban environment.

In July 2008 DARE-DARE began the third phase of Dis/location and the eventual move from Cabot Square. By the summer of 2009 its two administrative office trailers had been located at the intersection of Dufresne and Larivière streets near the Frontenac métro. For more information on the Faubourgs district and on the Center please visit DARE-DARE’s Web Site at www.dare-dare.org.

CALL FOR INTENTIONS

Since the beginning of Dis/location, DARE-DARE has explored presentation contexts by supporting emergent artistic practices focused on experimentation and risk-taking. Through the theory and experimentation that both emanates from and forms the Center, DARE-DARE is looking to the 2010 and 2011 artistic programming schedule to push the limits and extend the innovative concept of the Center. DARE-DARE is looking for audacious projects that question the operational realities of the Center and/or projects of a contextual and public art nature that use infiltration, interference, furtiveness, and diversion/variation. The projects, which interact with reality - with the everyday - could use satellite locations, could evolve or could be developed through circumstance. DARE-DARE invites artists to speculate on the future of the Center and on art in the urban context by rethinking ideas of displacement, uncertainty and precariousness through the infiltration of various locations and contexts. DARE-DARE is searching for geographically, theoretically, poetically or politically focused proposals that feed the reflexive and experiential notions of Dis/location.

Your proposals can take different forms. Be inventive!

Create possible infiltration scenarios. Shaped fables or stories about spaces of diversion/variation produced by/for Dis/location? Through an infiltrating or speculative project image how Dis/location could operate differently. Fantasizing about the ideal context for presentation beyond the confines of walls? Your intended project could take the form of public intervention, performance, event, round-table, publication, conference/workshop, Web site or others that could be a specific period, variable duration or repeated over time. A preliminary selection will be taken from the proposals and the research intentions received. Following this, DARE-DARE could invite selected artists to provide more precise details about their project, after which the final selection will be made, sometime in early spring 2010. With an ecological mind, DARE-DARE invites you to submit your dossier on a CD/DVD.

Your dossier should comprise:

-A text describing your research intention (max. 200 words) (.doc, .pdf),

-A curriculum vitae (.doc, .pdf),

-A detailed text describing your work (.doc, .pdf),

-Ten (10) digital images (max. 1 MB),

-A short list describing the images (.doc, .pdf),

-One audio or video (max. 5 mins.) and all related documents,

-Press clippings (if available) (.doc, .pdf)

The Center does not accept proposals via email. You may include a self-addressed-stamped-envelope for the return of your documents (the Center will not keep unclaimed proposals). The Center respects the CARFAC fee structure.

DARE-DARE offers:

-Exhibition fee of $ 1700

-Author’s rights of $ 50

-Project promotion

-Organization and gaining all necessary authorization and permits

-Material and production fee up to $ 800

Mandate

DARE-DARE Centre de diffusion d’art multidisciplinaire de Montréal is a flexible and open artist-run center dedicated to research and education. The Center supports and develops emergent artistic practices through the exploration and diversification of modes of production, the presentation and the diffusion of artistic works and interventions.

7. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Activist Performance Series

Deadline date: February 17, 2010; Source: Nicolas Dumit Estevez

Call for Applications 2010

Activist Performance Series

www.emergenyc.org

APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 17TH, 2010

The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics at New York University is now accepting applications for its third year of EMERGENYC, the Hemispheric New York Emerging Performers Program. This is the second year of Activist Performance (“artivism”) series. EMERGENYC aims to support the development of New York-based artists ages 18 to 28 through a program of workshops and events between April 3rd and June 18th, 2010 (see “The Program” section below for details). We seek talented, committed and highly motivated young activists/artists/performers whose work functions as a vehicle for political expression and social change, and who examine the broad range of identities, practices and histories of the Americas (the western hemisphere, thus “hemispheric”) through genres such as spoken word, street performance, political cabaret, performance art, video performance, movement, and others.

Why Hemispheric New York?
New York City is a space of transformation in which expressive practices from throughout the Americas come into contact and combine into new artistic forms. The constant encounters and collisions of African-, Native-, Asian-, Latino- and European- American cultures that define the City, combined with the multiple political and counter-cultural movements that have flourished on its streets, are a key source of the artistic and activist innovation that has long characterized New York City. Experimental performance, hip-hop and salsa are powerful examples of the hemispheric fusions that the City’s neighborhoods have incubated. Anti-consumerism activism like Reverend Billy’s Church of Stop Shopping, artistic interventions such as the Guerilla Girls and Fulana’s If You Fear Something, You’ll See Something poster campaign are examples of the innovative conjunction of art and political protest. Drawing on this vitality, the program will enable young activists/performers to work with leading practitioners in the field, to take interdisciplinary leaps, and to develop their own strategies to use performance for social change.

The Program
Between April and June, the selected participants will take part in weekly workshops led by George Emilio Sánchez as well as by invited artists/activists such as Susana Cook, Reverend Billy and Savitri D, Karen Finley, Anna Deavere Smith, Fulana, Pamela Sneed, Peggy Shaw, Lorie Novak, and others. One of the goals of this series is to work in all five boroughs in New York City. We ask applicants to define social issues that are important to them and to find a bridge to communities around those issues. Past participants have explored themes of racism and racial stereotypes; LGBTQ rights; war and human rights; gender and sexual violence; religion; and gentrification, among others. They have created performance pieces around these issues, interviewed members of various communities, and led workshops in community programs (such as GLOBE/Make the Road New York), etc.

The program will be divided into three phases. Phase 1: every Saturday 10am-2pm from April 3rdt to May 8th, participants work closely with George Emilio Sánchez in developing performance and activist strategies, such as Boalian techniques, performance art and site-specific interventions. Phase 2: intensive daily sessions from May 15- 22, participants work closely with leading activists, artists and scholars, and explore specific tactics for work in the field (street performance, interviewing, videotaping, seeing other people’s work, etc.). Phase 3: every Saturday from May 29th to June 12th participants develop their work with communities/groups of interest throughout the City, building on the strategies explored through the workshops. Final event (June 18th): participants will share their strategies, performances, and experiences in a public forum at the Hemispheric Institute.

This program has a fee of $1000. Some financial aid will be available on a need basis. Program will be contingent on enrollment. Minimum number of participants: 10. Maximum number of participants: 18.

To see the program schedule for the past two years, visit: http://www.emergenyc.org

Who Is Eligible
EMERGENYC is now open to activists/artists/performers between the ages of 18 to 28 who live in New York City. Applicants must have prior experience in activism and/or various performance genres. The program welcomes applications from individuals enrolled in the City’s colleges and universities AND from those who are not currently pursuing formal higher education.

How to Apply
Please send the following materials to hemi.newyork@nyu.edu no later than February 17th
-Completed application form
-A resume or biographical statement (maximum 500 words) that tells us about who you are, where you are from, your performance background and your current projects.
-A statement of purpose (maximum 750 words) describing the reasons you want to participate in EMERGENYC. Please also describe the specific issues you would want to address through the program and any preliminary ideas about the communities where you would ground this work.
-2 letters of recommendation, which your recommenders must send directly to hemi.newyork@nyu.edu <mailto:hemi.emergenyc@nyu.edu>

Selected participants will be notified the week of March 1st; registration payment will be due March 15th; and program activities will begin on Saturday, April 3rd.

The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics is a collaborative, multilingual and interdisciplinary consortium of institutions, artists, scholars, and activists throughout the Americas. The organization’s mission is to map new areas of knowledge based on understanding embodied practice—performance—as a way of creating new meaning and transmitting cultural values, memory and identity. Through courses, work groups, conference/festivals, a digital video library, an online scholarly journal, a tri-lingual website, and public forums, the Institute explores the relationship between expressive behavior and social and political life in the Americas.

8. CALL FOR SUBMMISSIONS: ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival 2010
Deadline date: February 19, 2010: Source: ANTI Festival

ANTI Festival 2010 will focus on textual, written and language-based responses to site specificity. We encourage artists working across a range of media to consider the following areas of enquiry, these include, but are not limited to:

-Page and screen-based responses to site - contextual approaches to publication and dissemination

-Mapping and mark-making - geographic and topographic textual processes

-Inscription - the materiality of writing

-Language and translation – nationhood and place

-Writing as performance - live writing as contextual and site-based practice

-Performance texts and site-based processes – spatial/contextual engagement and live utterance

ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival will be held in Kuopio, Finland between Sept 29th – Oct 3rd 2010.

ANTI is an international contemporary arts festival presenting site-specific works made for public space. Over the past eight years ANTI has presented live, sonic, visual and text-based art from today’s most exciting and innovative artists. A truly international festival and Finland’s foremost presenter of Live Art, ANTI is a meeting place for artists and audiences fascinated by how art shapes and responds to the places and spaces of everyday life.

ANTI’s emphasis is on site-specificity. The festival understands this term in an expanded sense; proposals may suggest works that deal with a site geographically, culturally or by association etc. The proposal form asks artists to state their preferred site for their project. Please think carefully about where and how a project will be sited. The festival will undertake all negotiations to allow projects to use public/private space. Please remember that ANTI does not programme works for gallery or theatre spaces.

As ANTI festival takes place in public space it is essential proposals consider a site’s pre-existing ‘audience’; be they passers-by, customers or residents. Alongside those who purposely visit the festival, a substantial part of ANTI’s audience are members of the public who come across the works by chance.

Proposal form

All proposals must be sent using the electronic form on ANTI Festival’s website (ANTI 2010). The form allows a link to be made to any online documentation artists may have of their work and for artists to attach their CV and one image of their work. In addition ONE piece of supporting material (i.e. DVD, CD-ROM) can be submitted as hardcopy.

The proposal deadline is February 19th 2010. Please send your supporting material, clearly marked with your name and project title, to:
ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival
Minna Canthin katu 4, 4th Floor
70100 Kuopio, Finland.
All materials must reach the above address by February 19th 2010.

12. CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: Love Letters Project by Francis O'Shaughnessy

Date: unspecified; Source: Francis O'Shaughnessy

Hello everyone,

I've started an art project called “Love Letters”. I need participants!

All the letters will be for a future installation and a performance art. All the letters will be placed in an installation art for a period of 2 years in a exhibition in Montréal. All the letters can be written in all the languages you want. Please look the description down here!

There is a description in English, Spanish and French down here! Please post to all who might be interested. You can see example of the project:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=39886519568&ref=ts

Project: Love letter

The goal of this project is to collect feelings and authentic emotions registers on paper which you have one day received from a person or writing for somebody. Then I propose two shutters with my love letter project.

1-The project consists to send a love letter to me, written by the hand, addressed not to me but to a person whom you like and who was one day of passage in your life.
