1. FADO NEWS: What’s been happening: YOU WISH YOU LIVED IN TORONTO
Trust us, you do. FADO has been hard at work lately, and we have experienced some amazing performances in the last two months. Including Mothering, a 4-day performance installation from Toronto’s own Moyan King, performed with Dayna McLeod and Nathalie Claude in mid-February. Mothering treated Toronto to some serious pampering by our resident “moms” and we won’t ever be the same again.
A week later, the audiences of Toronto were offered a special treat in the form of the Polish Power Players/Tiny Therapeutic Theatre, with Dariusz Fodczuk and ArtI Grabowski. Both gave loud, large, funny and stunning performances at XPACE.

In March, FADO hosted a 10-day mini residency in our International Visiting Artists Series with 3 artists from Tel Aviv - Yaron David, Meir Tati and Karin Mendelovici.
FADO asked Yaron David to curate two other artists from Tel Aviv, and working together as a trio, to create a new performance in/for Toronto, using an invented collaborative working model. After a short residency in Toronto, the final work was the culmination of a continuous improvised performance and working process that began for the artists a month prior.

FADO Performance Art Centre is pleased to present Julie Andrée T. (Quebec, Canada) in a special one-night only performance of Not Waterproof. Julie’s unique blend of performance art and theatre has been presented across Canada and around the world. She has worked with choreographers and directors Benoit Lachambre, Xavier Le Roy, Dominique Porte, Martin Bélanger, Jacob Wren and filmmaker Dominic Gagnon, and since 2003 she has been performing with the notorious performance art ensemble Black Market International.
When performance-installation encounters theatre in Julie Andrée T's work, the blend is unsettling and fascinating. Julie's iconoclastic work is a hybrid of these two approaches in which dialogue, a series of actions and live images are gradually distilled into poetry. Disconcerting, moving and unclassifiable, Not Waterproof deploys an astounding transformation of the body by means of a metamorphosis of the stage landscape. In Not Waterproof, Julie Andrée T. exchanges dramatic text for a material based writing created through physical action, refusing all semblance of character and playing with the codes of representation. Her body is subjected to a series of ordeals, is pulverized and dirtied, becoming a dreamscape. In exposing her vulnerability, she quietly conveys the impermanent and ephemeral nature of our lives. Like an effervescent fraternal twin.
About the artist:
Julie Andrée T.’s installations and performance works have been shown in Canada, US, South America, Asia and Europe. She has collaborated with numerous artists, choreographers and directors, as well as working with the PONI collective from Brussels as co-artistic-director in 2007. Some of her major works in Canada include a series of installation-environments exploring the human body in different constructed environment where weather, architecture and sound co-existed as in Weather Report/Potentiels évoqués (presented at Skol Gallery in Montreal, 2005). In 2007 she created Études d’un phénomène ou l’invention d’un souvenir at Chambre Blanche (Quebec), an exploration of our fascination with weather and natural disaster in the age of spectacle and media. Julie Andrée T. is currently guest artist Faculty at the School of museum of Fine Arts in Boston (USA) where she teaches performance art.

InterSER0, International Action Art Encounter is an independent project of Mexican action artists in collaboration with the Carrillo Gil Museum of Art and the Mexican National Fund for Culture and Arts through its Projects and Co-Investment Program.
InterSER0 emerges from the interest of a group of action artist in Mexico City to build a debate platform to discuss issues regarding this art form in any of its modalities: chamber performance, performance-installation, interventions, public art, processes, etc. InterSER0 focuses on the concepts, ideas, styles and attitudes of a small group of artist and their works to enable us to identify the cultural epicentre of the subject matter proposed. The aim is to enrich this approach to performance art forms by extending the contextual framework and identifying the aspects that build the cultural, social, political, aesthetic and ethic relational circle they form.
InterSER0 is divided into two events proposed by the artist and curator Elvira Santamaría: Time doesn't exist, the creation of time- 14th-18th April and Hedonism in Performance Art- 16th-22nd June. This project is based on an anthropologic - philosophic - aesthetic point of view, considering the affluence and influence of new concepts, ideas, values and counter-cultural narratives arising in different fields of science, technology, philosophy, history, art and other interdisciplinary forms of knowledge, etc.
The contemporary art practices promote counter-cultural narratives in an attempt to open or affirm the space of freedom of art. For performative forms, this space is open as a platform of debate of the ideas that the artist embodies. Thus, this event will be the place to meet and discuss old topics of performativity in art, seen from new perspectives and through actual art works.
Time doesn't exist, the creation of time - 14th-18th April. In cooperation with international organizations in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and Czech Republic, performance artist and educator BBB Johannes Deimling will be offering various performance art workshops and opportunities in 2009. These workshops will investigate the focal questions and practices of performance art work through practical and theoretical exercises and talks, and the results of these workshops will be presented in the context of internationally recognized performance art events and festivals.
The center of the workshop focuses on self-perception and communication with the body in performance. Self perception and experience characterize the feeling in dealing with the body, time and space in performance art, as well as in ordinary communication. To understand the body as a tool, and to learn to use this tool in communication, is the main goal of these workshops. In addition to practical and theoretical studio teachings, participants will have the experience of connecting with other artists and the larger performance art community.
Performance art is always speaking about the present, is looking for debate and wants dialogue. Performance Art burgeons in the mind and in contact with others. Performance Art has an own language and own aesthetics, and as an art form, is constantly developing its signs and medias. It breaks with tradition, rejects it, renews it, refers to itself, presents new ways…and breaks it again. The method is interactive: The intermediation of performance art with the medias of performance art. The participants experiment, reflect, test, have a first-hand experience with the body, and work through a personal approach to this artform.

VIVA! Art Action, a performance festival, is currently seeking an Event Coordinator. Under the direction of the Board of Directors, this person will be responsible for organizing the 10-day festival, taking place from September 17-26. Contract starts May 18, 2009 and continues until October 30, 2009. The coordinator will be paid a 12,500$ honorarium, which represents a part-time position (28h/w). Please note that candidates must be available to work a flexible schedule, with workloads increasing in the month prior to and during the festival period.

GalataPerform, an artist-run performance space in Istanbul, is organizing the 5th Visibility Project on October 10th, 2009. This is a broad project organized with the participation of international artists, in the under-ground theatres, art galleries, artist studios, houses, shops and streets of the historical region of Galata. Visibility 5 is expected to be a part of the city’s lively art scene, which will be hosting the 11th Istanbul Biennial in the same period.
We are looking for artists who would like to make experimental, site-specific performances within this event. Here are the conditions of participation:
-The project might be in different formats such as performance art, public interventions, experimental and performative music, panels, stand-up, bands, marches, cooking-eating, children’s activities, experimental circus, choir, multi-disciplinary forms, alternative tours, experimental dance, internet projects…
-The performance may take place in a small theatre or gallery; a house or a restaurant; a shop or an hotel room. Street performances are of first preference. The project team will give further consultation about venues to the selected projects.
-This year “light” is the frame of the festival as Galata is a district of small light production and an old center of Sufi Dervishes, seeking for wisdom and enlightenment.

Each year Franklin Furnace awards grants to emerging artists, allowing them
to produce major works in New York. Works may engage the Internet as an art
medium and/or venue. Grants may range between $2,000 and $10,000. Artists
from all areas of the world are encouraged to apply; full-time students are
ineligible.
Franklin Furnace has no curator; each year a new panel of artists reviews
all proposals. We believe that this peer panel system allows all kinds of
artists from all over the world an equal shot at presenting their work.
Every year the panel changes, as do the definitions of 'emerging artist',

Memento Mori – Call for Contributions

The aim of this issue of Performance Research is to examine cultural representations of death and dying and their relation to performance. Calling on professionals and practitioners from across academia, the arts and the ‘death industry’ ‘Memento Mori’ will include a range of critical essays, photographic work, artist’s pages and interviews that explore the ways in which death and the cultural practices that surround it are represented and memorialised in social and private spaces, from theatre to everyday ritual.
‘Memento Mori’ examines ways in which performance brings the processes of death, dying, and the memorialisation of the dead to consciousness. Theatre, performance and the cultural practices of death are themselves moments which bring mortality to mind, that enable us to reflect upon our own lives and the lives of those departed. Performance equally struggles with the passing of its own event and the complex archival activity that stands in place of its vanishing. How do the dynamics of performance itself provide an engagement with the process of dying?
How do recent advances in technology change formalized cultural approaches to dying, and has death become mechanical, dutiful and deliberately distanced as a consequence? How does ‘staging’ death, as a cultural approach to funeral ritual, alter our perception of death? Despite our best attempts at seriousness and respect issues of death and dying provoke grim humour, sensationalist performances and slapstick comedy. This issue questions how and why we attempt to negotiate the processes of death and dying or find representations and memorialisations that attempt to normalize the inevitable.
Key Questions
How do diverse theatrical and performance events, from the sideshow to Hamlet, provoke reflection upon mortality, and the processes of death and dying?
By what means do the activities associated with death (oratories, literary readings, music, design, costume and procession) serve similar demands across cultures, and how can the ritual processes of dying and death still resist cultural homogenisation?
The representation of death often requires the ornate, the hidden and the procedural in opposition to its reality; the banal, the apparent and the random. What new or re-considered forms of language or praxis do we as beings and as cultures, need to engage with the fact of dying and death?
How have the many forms of historical representation of death, from mourning ritual to charlatan photographic ‘ghosts’, become a form of spectral discourse for something that cannot be directly confronted?

The workshop will focus on the political nature of choreography, sound, and video exploration. Based on Forsythe's physical and theatrical methods, which are influenced by athletic and martial arts training, participants will be guided through an intensive preliminary physical and sound workshop, which will then be translated to an exterior context somewhere in the city. The workshop will include both studio and site specific explorations (tba to the participants, during initial phase of workshop). The workshop is a continuation of the Tusketdance project, where politics and movement are intertwined to forge experimentation within the creative process, allowing theatrical expressions to emerge absent of classical notions of dance and form. 16. CALL FOR PERFORMERS: The Apology Project

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2009 is looking for performers to participate in artist Maria Legault’s artwork entitled The Apology Project.
Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, currently in its fourth year, is a free all night contemporary art
celebration, taking place on Saturday, October 3rd to sunrise on Sunday, October 4th.
The Apology Project requires a cluster of 55 people to wear large brown paper bags over their torsos, congesting a public pathway, and personally apologizing to every person who ventures through them. This human blockade will disrupt the regular flow of traffic.
The performance will run overnight (from 7pm-7am). All performers are required to attend a rehearsal prior to the event. Performers will receive an honorarium, and will have access to complimentary food and beverages during their scheduled breaks.

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche is a free city-wide celebration of contemporary art taking place from sunset on
Saturday, October 3rd to sunrise on Sunday, October 4th, 2009. This festival encourages the public to explore the unique side of Toronto through public art commissions, all-night exhibitions, live performances and creative art programs featured throughout the city. All related projects and commissioned art installations are pre-planned and produced by the City of Toronto’s Special Events department.
In 2008, this event brought together the exceptional talents of more than 750 artist and curators, 450 docents and volunteers, 92 galleries, museums, cultural and educational institutions and neighbourhoods, and 24 corporate sponsors and media partners. Close to 1,000,000 patrons attended the event in 2008, and we expect attendance to exceed 1,000,000 people in 2009.

Every artist who participates in Préavis de désordre urbain commits to:
Do the laboratory about performance in urban space. Perform outdoors and indoors.
Participate in meetings in bars of the town between performers, town planner, sociologists, policemen and the public about order and disorder in public space.
Artistic project:
We’ll be particularly interested in projects exploring new types of relations between citizens in public space, disrupting social and urban codes and control devices in public space. The laboratory allows to build the project of performance in urban places. Each artist is welcome to perform indoors. (Friche la belle de Mai, Théâtre des Bernardines)

Performance Art & Action Poetry
Over the past 30 years, Action Art found fertile fields of confluence between the experimentation on vision and gesture and poetic-visual sound dramaturgy. Most of this research was characterized by the connection between Performance Art , “total poetry” and the nomadism of the performer that restlessly shifts through linguistic fields just like through geographic territories and varied socio-cultural circles. This year Harta Performing stresses the concept of nomadism perceived as the key element in the performer work. In the theoretical intervention opening the fifth edition of the festival, great attention will be given to the dialectic of relationships “between spiritus and corpus, subject and object, imagination and reality, thought and action, private and public, local and global, specific and total, project and performance”. As stated by Giovanni Fontana “on these oppositions, a fluctuating dynamics takes shape, it holds up the energy and matter continuum in which action is strenuously built. The body energy is used to get rid of imposed references and directions and to generate new situations; it continuously breaks the temporary balances and favours the construction of interlinguistic and intermedial systems that influence the dynamics of the elements involved.”
The international festival “ART ACTION - Harta Performing Monza”, unanimously considered one of the most interesting events in the framework of international Art innovation, is a significant point of reference for cultural exchange. After the success of the previous editions, this year the festival offers to the city of Monza not only a comparison between the new arts but also an opportunity to reflect on one of the most pressing and thrilling issues of the theoretical debate: the meaning and the creation techniques of the “plural work”, true action field of the polyartist, “who can play his cards right between poetry and cinema, theatre and music, dance and visual arts”.

Participants
This invitation goes out all the artists who have participated in a Gallery SoToDo event over the past twenty years. A new participant to the congress is possible only through a recommendation from an artist who has already participated in a SoToDo congress.
What we offer
We would like to emphasis that the congress is a meeting place and a forum for exchange in the true sense of the word. Our main goal is to create a space where artists and public can come together and exchange ideas and network in a non-commercial environment.
Artist participates will receive:
- Artists traveling to Sacramento - are guaranteed lodging for four nights
between the 27 – 30 May 2009
- Breakfast and a warm meal for the three days of the congress
- A printed catalogue and / or CD-ROM.
Apropos money: Because of our limited budget, we are not in the position to cover the cost of travel or pay an honorary fee to the artists. However, it will be our responsibility to make your stay in Sacramento as comfortable as possible. Your lodging, breakfast and a warm meal, plus a printed catalogue and / or a CD-ROM are our traditional ways of saying thank you.
What must be done: The application
If you would like to participate, please make your wish known. There is no form to fill out. Those who respond first will be the first served. Only 18 Performance Artists (performance art groups) will be able to participate. Please write me to confirm your participation or also if you wish to recommend an artist. Please include the following information for the catalogue, (jpg.format) and send it to homosunshine@gmx.de
- A personal photo
- A short resume and/or statement about your work related to the theme: Talk to me.
- A layout of one side of a 8.5 x 11(american) or A4 (european) piece of paper that will look good reproduced in black and white. This layout can take any form (text, art work, photos) and will be used without alteration so long as long as it meets the size requirements.
Panel Discussions
The afternoon is set aside for informal discussions moderated by the participating artists about performance art. It is your responsibility to participate and choose the topics or issues you would like to discuss.
Art Shop
We have included an Art shop within the congress to give participating artists the opportunity to sell multiples, their catalogs, CD or DVD, works on paper or other artifacts for under 100 dollars.
Docu-Kino
You will be able to show documentation of your work or of others at a small cinema at the congress. Please bring your videos in DVD or VHS format. A space will be set aside to present your work.
Info Desk
An Info-Desk is where you can display documentation in the form of catalogs, text or photos about yourself to the public.

Art in Odd Places (AiOP) 2009: SIGN invites proposals from visual and performing artists interested in the spectacle of daily urban life. In its 5th edition, AiOP takes place on 14th Street, NYC from October 1-26, 2009. We encourage artists and performers to explore its length and diversity, tease out its history and intervene imaginatively to encourage visitors, workers and inhabitants to discover it anew. AiOP 2009 is inspired by the many meanings of SIGN: Direction. Ban. Authority. Solidarity. Advertisement. Ownership. Gesture. Enticement. Omen. Signature. Trace. We are looking for work that is as much a sign of the times as a signpost to possibilities. The Engaged Body is a 10-day intensive workshop focusing on “live art”- performance art as embodied actions, and performative video works - taught by respected educator and performance artist, Judith Price
Contemporary performance art is one of the ‘live art’ disciplines and encompasses several different formats, from task–based actions and rituals to durational and interventional pieces. Most involve some form of movement and gesture and some include vocalization or story telling.
Program
Participants are individually assisted while exploring the technical, practical and artistic challenges involved in producing performance art pieces and performative video in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Examples of both contemporary and historical performance works will be examined through daily lectures, video viewings and group discussions.
Each participant will engage in several live performance actions exploring the different forms of performance art, and everyone will take part in discussions about the individual pieces. Judith will also provide one-on-one guidance and assistance throughout this process.
Screenings of your video project/s in progress are followed by critical feedback to assist you in bringing your final video project to a public screening on the last day of the Engaged Body program.
This workshop will be of particular interest to visual artists who want to explore live art forms as part of their practice and also to those engaged in other disciplines such as dance, film or theatre who want to expand their practices across disciplines.

IPAH is an organization of artist and students of performing arts that aims at bringing together performance artists from all over the world in order to encourage the exchange with and learning from each other.
Like the years before we organize a Performance Summer Camp this year, where young performance artists can meet and work together for one week with more experienced artist from whose knowledge and experience they can learn in workshops and discussions.
In the week just after the camp there will be a meeting of Performance Artists where participants and teachers of the Summercamp and guests will meet and perform. This event is organized in cooperation with the Performer Stammtisch Berlin.
The IPAH performance Summer Camp provides a platform for young performance artists and students of performance art. No matter whether you are already advanced within your performance practice or you are just taking your first steps in live art - the camp will offer you a unique opportunity: further develop your individual artistic work in workshops with experienced performance artist and exchange and discuss your ideas with other young emerging artists.

The Lab Sessions are a series of themed interactive art parties hosted
and curated by Labspace Studio. Labspace Studio is looking for artists
to present their work(s) for the fifth installment of The Lab Sessions.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
"Keep It In The Family" is a show that explores family dynamics,
personal histories, memories and shared experiences. We're looking for
completed works or proposals for collaborative projects that involve an
artist working directly with a family member. Submissions should include
a family member who is not simply the content of the piece, but who is a
key collaborator in the production of the work.
(Family members do not have to be artists)
