Performance art as a wily way to devolve research proposals into unpredictable states of personal agency and volition - finding ways to access the body as a resource for playful problem solving and surfacing unconscious ideas to facilitate what you want to manifest. Interests of participants will determine the contents of this working group.

 

The think-tank is a conceptual aquarium for artists to physically and mischievously source new layers of desiring.  In this process-based research intensive you will be seen, you will recognize your own way of working, and you will feel the inherent juiciness of what it is you want to do. 

 

Using psycho-physical scores, ridiculous experiments, collective disco-ssion, solo gestation, material romance, renunciation of methodologies, oppositional stratagems as a motivating force, and performances of resulting ruminations and resistances, we will meander directly into the performative or create developmental structures for visual or inter-relational projects - but there will always be an engagement with performativity as a way to raise the stakes, to be in the energetic state of being witnessed in our collective not-knowing discovery process. 

 

ABOUT lo bil

lo bil creates performative experiments to correlate research into process, pleasure, vulnerability, risk, memory, agency, labour, an aesthetics of feeling and the impacts of a social location on identity. lo finds images through physical improvisations, spoken loops, and material interactions. Her work is raw, amusing, transparent, and often involves a feedback loop with the audience. Solo performances for 2017 include Duration & Dialogue (January), Rhubarb (February), Flowchart (April), ps: We Are All Here (July), in Glasgow (July), betOnest in Stolpe, Germany (August)  and “Procedures: Audience as Knife” at Harbourfront HATCH (September). In 2016 lo presented work at AGO First Thursdays as part of NO OBJECT Collective; Summerworks Performance Festival where she won the FADO Live Art Award; at Panoply Lab, NYC in the Post-Dance Symposium; in Montreal, for Victoria Stanton/Dare-Dare, WIVES Assemblee at Studio 303, and Words and [  ] a durational conference by School of Making Thinking. In 2015, at Month of Performance Art-Berlin and ITINERANT Performance Art Festival NYC. In 2014, at 7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art and 25 Hours for 25 Years of the DC Art Centre. Facilitation of groups to research physicality, opposition, performance and necessity in Black Mountain, North Carolina at School of the Alternative and in Toronto at Intergalactic Arts Collective and now Parkdale Prana Room.  lo is a graduate of the Ontario Arts Council’s Artist-Educator Foundations Course, and the Second City Conservatory, has an Honour’s BA from University of Toronto in Cinema, Philosophy and Semiotics and has studied performance methods with teachers from around the globe for 20 years.

2017/18 SEASON RESIDENCY // CALL FOR PROPOSALS

 

Lead by our team of artistic directors and supported by our volunteers, hub14 is a self-sustaining studio and performance incubator nestled in the Queen West area of Toronto. Space is our biggest asset.

 

Mission:

hub14 aims to provide affordable space for the independent contemporary performance community in Toronto and beyond. We support artists through an evolving roster of programs including artistic residencies, dramaturgical services, workshops and presenting opportunities as well as a variety of community-engaged initiatives. 

 

Vision:

Our vision is to be a cultural hub for independent contemporary artists to explore, critically examine their art and refine their training without exterior or financial pressure. We encourage conversation between artistic disciplines. 

 

RESIDENCY PROGRAMS:

 

research hub: We offer up to 40 hours of studio time, heavily subsidized. The program offers the opportunity for showings although these are not mandatory. We are looking for ideas at the early stages, which have not been previously work-shopped. 

 

launchpad: Geared toward work that is already commissioned or programmed, yet underfunded. We offer up to 40 hours of studio time. Emerging artists may request an outside eye within our Resident Director-ship at a subsidized rate.

 

live-in: Intended for artists living outside of Toronto. Artists are invited to live and create at hub14 for a maximum of two-week stay. A minimum of one showing and documentation are required throughout the Residency. An interview may be required.

 

community chest: Special initiatives proposed by and/or supporting the community. Examples include community workshops, performance series, artist discussions, etc.

 

gallery series: Proposals for all-access gallery pop-ups of up to 3 days. Submissions can include film, photography, installation, visual art works, etc. Applications may be scheduled as solo exhibitions or a mixed program; this will be determined in context of the proposals reviewed.

The Toronto Dance Community Love-In presents PS: We Are All Here, a series of curated dance works from around the world and around the corner. This July, we transform Parkdale treasure Pia Bouman Scotiabank Studio Theatre into an all-embracing love-nest for performance and party. On July 6th and 7th & July 13th and 14th, over a dozen artists share experimental contemporary dance. “The Lovers” and series curators (Robyn Breen, Tina Fushell and Kate Nankervis), are making space for artists and their chaotic, immersive, messy, pleasurable, lo-fi, inquisitive and supercilious work - together we are demystifying dance.

 

Highlights include:

–Elizabeth Chitty, an influential Canadian dance artist prominent in the 1980’s for working with video and sound in immersive modes of performance which were well ahead of her time.

–Emerging pop dance company Rock Bottom Movement (Alyssa Martin), dreaming big with a cosmic team of pixie-dance-rascals.

–Montreal’s Ellen Furey and Malik Nashad Sharpe share their work NO NATIONALISM which longs for multiculturalist futures.

–International dance artists such as UK’s contemporary breaker, Muti Musafiri and So You Think You Can Dance Portugal winner and Summer Love-In faculty member Marco Da Silva Ferreira.

 

After-parties hosted by The Love-In with DJ CrystalWhispurr happen Friday nights July 7th and 14th and features music by local DJ’s and atmospheric design by Mary-Dora Bloch-Hansen, and Francesca Chudnoff and video installation by RUDE Collective.

Toronto Arts Council's Animating Historic Sites grants program deadline is July 17, 2017 for projects in 2018. Grants of up to $30,000 are available for individual artists and curators, collectives and organizations to program in select Toronto Historic sites and museums and Evergreen Brick Works. The goals of the program are to serve as a catalyst for people to see and think about historic places differently, and to provide alternative methods of historic interpretation. I.AM (Intergenerational Arts Movement) is seeking exhibition and performance art submissions for our third annual community arts festival “I.AM Enough”, taking place Thursday August 10 tp Sunday August 13, 2017, located at the JEH Macdonald house on 121 Centre Street, Thornhill, Canada.

 

This will be I.AM’s first performance art event and is seeking submissions from individual artists and collectives working in a variety of performance related disciplines. 

 

“I.AM ENOUGH” is a festival surrounding the notions of self worth and realizing your full potential. In a place bombarded by selfishness and wanting more we must remind one another to look within and fully accept our current state of being. We are enough. This community arts festival is in partnership with the City of Vaughan in celebration of Canada 150. The festival is situated on a scenic 4-acre parcel of land, the MacDonald House, home of famed Canadian painter, J.E.H. MacDonald, a founding member of the Group of Seven and his son, illustrator Thoreau MacDonald.

The Art Gallery of Ontario is seeking actors, singers, choral groups, and all types of live performers to participate in a large-scale oral performance for Nuit Blanche. 2017 Nuit Blanche Call for Performers

The Art Gallery of Ontario is seeking trained actors, singers, choral groups, and all types of live performers to participate in a large-scale oral performance for Nuit Blanche. Performers with all levels of experience, and from diverse backgrounds and age groups are encouraged to apply.

 

Inspired by the low-tech ingenuity of the “human microphone”, a technique popularized by activists to amplify the messages of a speaker by using the voices of the gathered audience, The Forest is a performance that celebrates the force and fragility of the human voice and the capacity for words to establish bonds between people across time and space.

 

Requirements:

–minimal to advanced training in theatre, vocal performance, or other performing arts including performance art

–strong, resilient voice

–physical endurance

–energy and stamina

–over 18 years old

 

The performance will run from 7pm to 7am starting on Saturday, September 30th. You will be asked to take part in 2 shifts of approximately 1.5 hours each (3 hours total) over a 4.5 hour time slot during Nuit Blanche as well as a few rehearsals in advance of the performance. Food and drink will be provided as well as a small honorarium.

Aim of workshop is to explore proximity awareness, working in parallel with others, simultaneously but not together. Exploring the impact of synchronous behaviour, how we can react upon each other through sharing space and time in order to observe and learn from each other’s unique experience of the communal moment.

 

To create a space of trust, where each of us can be enabled to shake off superfluous habits, mannerisms and reactions, attempting to go beyond behaviours of social posture and display. Developing safe zones for retreat, reflection and return, engendering respect for the particularity and pace of each person’ s individual processes.

 

Program / Agenda: A plan for each day will be created directly from the interactions that emerged on the previous day. Rules will occasionally be established to challenge certain habits or limitations that we become aware of. Overall, the intention is to create positive conditions for each person taking part, to reflect upon the particularity of our own creative approaches, and feel empowered to address anxieties, or what may be perceived to be gaps. In short, the art of getting lost and allowing yourself to be at ease inside states of transition and doubt.

 

The final day will offer an opportunity for either solo, collaborative or collective actions as decided by the group and with one day preparation in-between.

ABOUT PAErsche
PAErsche - the laboratory for Performance Art in North-Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Around 20 Performance Artists in and around this region are associated with PAErsche. It follows the movement of the 60ies and continues with a new generation of young Performance Artists. ABOUT Sandra Johnston
Sandra Johnston is a visual artist from Northern Ireland, working in the areas of site-responsive performance, drawing and video installations. The performance actions are experiential in nature, developed from the direct revelations of a body inhabiting space, light, motion and often being stimulated by the behaviour of random audiences. Each work is developed from carefully observing the tensions that exist between the history of locations, set in dialogue with the vibrancy and insistence of the passing moment. Johnston has presented work internationally since 1992 in a diverse range of contexts and interdisciplinary forms, often with a particular emphasis on projects within ‘contested spaces’. Between 2002/05 as an AHRC Research Fellow based at the University Of Ulster in Belfast, she developed a practice-based investigation into issues of ‘trauma of place’. This research explored how aspects of collective memory connected to specific locations can become altered after violent events, creating layers of stigmatization, or conversely, commemoration. From 2009/ 2012 this research extended as a PhD project entitled - Beyond Reasonable Doubt: An Investigation of Doubt, Risk and Testimony Through Performance Art Processes in Relation to Systems of Legal Justice. Since 2011 she is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. Throughout her career Johnston has collaborated extensively with other artists, occasionally through participation in international performance laboratories, and also as a co-founder and committee member of various artist-run collectives in Belfast, namely: CATALYST ARTS, BBEYOND, and AGENCY.

Founded in 2006 by Atelier Stark (studio Stark) and Tank FX, kitev (culture in the tower) is a laboratory for unusual interventions, resident in the water tower of Oberhausen's central train station. The tower is a nucleus and venue for activities of high artistic quality as well as a contact point for project related residencies in the region. The experimental field with its industrial character allows room for a wide range of interpretation. kitev supports innovative, experimental and interdisciplinary artists in their work and development, encourages/promotes the dialogue between different artistic practices and engages with the local social environment.

Evoking our colonial and non-colonial histories that exist in the light of night as in the darkness of the day, GHOST DAYS awakens a collaboration with artists, audience, and spirit. Internationally celebrated performance artist Terrance Houle will work in residence overnight at the Theatre Centre throughout the festival, culminating in a final performance that combines video, performance, photography, and music to conjure spirits and ghosts as audience and collaborators.

 

Terrance Houle is in residence at SummerWorks as part of the SummerWorks Lab - a place for exploration, experimentation, and process, allowing us to support work in early stages and create connections between audiences and artists.

 

ABOUT TERRANCE HOULE

Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and raised on the Great Plains of North America, Terrance Houle is an internationally recognized interdisciplinary media artist and a proud member of the Kainai Nation (Blood Tribe). Involved with Aboriginal communities all his life, he has traveled to reservations throughout North America participating in Powwow dancing and native ceremonies. Houle makes use of performance, photography, video & film, music and painting in his work. Likewise, Houle's practice includes various tools of mass dissemination such as billboards and vinyl bus signage. Four days of full immersion into Performance Art at Atelier Performative Künste, Düsseldorf - “MayDay" is the occasion to work practically together with the artists duo VestAndPage in their collaborative practice. With the use of the bodies (physical, mental and spiritual) as primary artistic tools, “MayDay" focuses on the body as a poetic and imaginary landscape. Changing contexts are used as a way to develop authentic modes of artistic action. It offers insight into VestAndPage's process-led and conceptual collaborative performance art practice in the name of the creation of illuminating universal meanings. VestAndPage work on a range of techniques and approaches, which reflect their practices and backgrounds along the interface of visual arts, performing arts and writing. We invite artists and researchers, coming from various backgrounds and disciplines, who are interested in the emerging field of embodied research. The call is also directed to anyone who would like to experience the body in a special environment and context. You don’t need to be a professional practitioner of the respective embodied techniques associated with the program, but rather be open and curious to enhance the understanding of the body and the environment in which you are embedded.

 

The Body Mapping Lab questions whether the body is losing its means and perception for being in contact with the environment and with other beings, beyond the omnipresence of digital life. At first, this assumption may sound nostalgic, or rather as an attempt to return back to the time when humankind was not so affected by the use of all sorts of technological devices. Yet, it has become undeniable that our ways of relating to either an environment or to one another have changed considerably. Specifically, the ability of the body to sense, observe and adapt to a certain locality, social field or condition has become an unpredictable and uncertain territory, where the borders between what is real and what isn’t are blurred.

 

To investigate this phenomenon, we will focus on the notion of «Embodiment» by exploring its various approaches and principles at Teufelsberg. While the participants will have the opportunity to fathom the urban charisma of the Teufelsberg with ethnographic methods of the urban researcher Anja Schwanhäußer, they will also have the chance to embody living and non-living entities with the performer Minja Mertanen. Furthermore, with the dancer and choreographer Petterson Costa they will be able to ascertain how the movement within the body and space becomes a gesture, and with the performer and researcher Nathalie Fari, how the body can be used as a translator. The participants will also be able to join a 5 Rhythms workshop with Oliver Euchner and a yoga class with Sacha Skott.
