PERFORMANCE: ACADEMY
Performance: Academy is a platform in which artists constitute their own school of learning–performing pedagogy–for an audience in the form of peer-to-peer academia, where self-organizing and personal experience as knowledge is valued over institutionalized frameworks. Artists, writers and creative thinkers from the performance art milieu as well as adjacent practices such as curation, social practice, film/video and more, develop and offer mini-courses (of 3 or more sessions dissmeinted over several weeks) presenting ideas and covering a range of topics and that each facilitator is already an expert in (however one might define "expert"). A workshop in the form of a performance; a performance in the form of a school. INCONSOLABLE SOLVENCY

What extra-sensory signals do we exchange when we trade money for goods, services and conveniences? How out of whack would a transaction have to be in order to hardly be recognizable as such? Would it–– could it–– seem like something else entirely? Like love? Like devastation? Like relief?
In this workshop, we will be troubling the methods of assessment and valuation we rely on every day in order to manage and/or mitigate our senses of security, trustworthiness, likability and fairness. Participants will work collaboratively to re-interpret and re-model concepts like “efficiency,” “transparency” and “trust,” by inventing tools for dissolving those social structures that depend on them. During each meeting, individuals and smaller clusters will propose experimental contracts or modes of currency for possible use by the group as a whole. Readings will be distributed and short process/speculative writing will be assigned each week. This workshop is offered free of charge. There is no fixed monetary cost, other kinds of equitable exchange are welcomed and encouraged.

Bethany Ides' Performance: Academy is presented in conjunction with, in relationship to, and in the context of the work she is developing in residency at HATCH entitled Deathbeds. Described as an opera created in community, Deathbeds is a multi-platform work is about desire as a contested resource and the ways various commodification compulsions affect romantic and economic ecologies alike. And how harrowing matters get when we try to break through all that–how funny but also jittery, how dizzyingly everything becomes blur the more emphatically we expect the expiration of the patient, Capitalism. With accelerated excitations, we imagine a body on the brink and tend to it even as we call for its demise.

ABOUT HATCH
HATCH is Harbourfront Centre’s performing arts residency and presentation series–a situation where new live artworks and new audiences meet in the spirit of inquiry.
This HATCH is a setting for artworks that take beginnings—a renewable, though perhaps not limitless resource—as their subjects. A whip-fast change of direction; an inkling; a certainty of a doubt—that’s what’s being worked with. In each of these projects the human faculties of improvisation, intuition, and inspiration face a battery of questions: How did we do it? When did it happen? What does it feel like? The questioning is rendered as a score. The score is performed. And the performance becomes itself the beginning. The ostensibly unplanned brings what was planned all along into stark relief, be it sinister, structural, changeable, or all of these at once.

Calling all writers, editors, and Wiki enthusiasts! Calling all performance artists and fringe media-makers! Let’s change official culture together, let’s rewrite the online encyclopedias, start filling in the too obvious gaps. Except for those born in libraries, Wiki procedures are anything but transparent. In an hour-long session, we’ll show you how, then provide individual assistance as you write about your own superheroes. Together we can continue the work of diversifying visual arts content and editorship on Wikipedia. We welcome past collaborators and new editors to help build Wikipedia content. No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary.

Dinco lives and works in Tijuana and Los Angeles and his research includes experimentation with performance presentation and the relationship between documentation and scholarship.
During Dinco’s iteration of Performance: Academy, participants (audience) will: take a hard (and subjective) look at the current state of performance praxis and strategies of performance presentation; examine goals, ideals and expectations with making and/or attending performance; address the relationship of performance within a visual art context, including the burgeoning trend of museums exhibiting and collecting performance; consider the Performance Festival Industrial Complex; and explore how and why all of this can (and arguably should) be challenged.
Participants will be expected to perform as part of this research and investigation.

4. CALL FOR PERFORMERS: Dream Variations (AGO/Nuit Blanche)

Presented at the AGO during the 2017 Nuit Blanche
Dream Variations is a multi-part project that invites the public into a receptive space of reflection, re-energization and harmonization. Within the context of larger political and cultural forces working at this time, Dream Variations proposes going within, collectively, as a way of finding new avenues for understanding and acting together. The project sets up a hospitable space for contemplation and relaxation, featuring an installation housing one hundred cots for visitor/participant use. Vocalists from the Faculty of Music at UofT and performers from the greater Toronto community will animate the installation with responsive improvisations that gesture toward the spirit of the artists’ invitations.
LOCATION
The project will take place inside the two atria of the Edward Johnson Building, 80 Queens Park Ave, home of the Faculty of Music at UofT (University of Toronto, Toronto). The atmosphere of the project will be one that encourages rest, quiet, reflection and meditation.
ROLE
The Producers of Nuit Blanche Toronto are looking for 15 artists and performers to act as Hosts to the general public for the event. Dream Variations aims to create a counter-point to the energy and scale of public space during the night of Nuit Blanche Toronto. The Hosts' key responsibility is to artfully and affectively facilitate the transition from the greater festival to the more intimate and reflective site of the project.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Contextualize the project to the public at large
2. Prime and prepare participants
3. Lead participants into the project installation
4. Oversee the space and tenor of the project
5. Create and maintain the intentional atmosphere and spirit of the project in collaboration with the artist
6. Communicate any issues to supervisory staff
Four (4) different types of 'Host' roles are being sought:
4 'Front of House' hosts: who receive, introduce, and prepare the public for Dream Variations
6 'Floor' hosts: who oversee, take care, and maintain the quiet atmosphere of the space as well the safety of the participants (working with support from security and staff)
2 Ushers: who will lead the public into the space of the project
3 Floats: who will fill any of the above roles as needed throughout the night
The Producer and Artist reserves the right to assign roles at their discretion.
HOURS AND RENUMERATION
The required hours and dates for the project are:
September 29, 2017, 7 PM +: 2 hour orientation meeting, rehearsal and walkthrough of site.
September 30, 2017, 7 PM – Oct 1, 2017, 7 AM (overnight): 12 hours, performance (with slotted breaks)
All hosts will be paid a fee of $242.00 CAD at the end of the performance. Breaks will be scheduled throughout the night and catered Meals will be provided by the Producer.

3. Able to work and maintain a positive demeanour within a prolonged quiet space.

I.AM (Intergenerational Arts Movement) is seeking exhibition and performance art submissions for our third annual community arts festival “I.AM Enough”, taking place Thursday September 28–Sunday October 1, 2017, located at the JEH Macdonald house on 121 Centre Street, Thornhill.
We are excited to open our reach to individual artists and collectives working in a variety of performance related disciplines for our performance art evening occurring on Saturday September 30.
“I.AM ENOUGH” is a festival surrounding the notions of self worth and reaching your full potential. In a place bombarded by selfishness and wanting more we must remind one another to look within and fully accept our current state of being. We are enough.
This community arts festival is in partnership with the City of Vaughan and Ontario Culture Days. The festival is situated on a scenic 4-acre parcel of land, the MacDonald House, home of famed Canadian painter, J.E.H. MacDonald, a founding member of the Group of Seven and his son, illustrator Thoreau MacDonald.

6. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Screen:Moves

The RT Collective are pleased to announce Screen:Moves—a program of short dance videos. Presented in collaboration with Dancemakers with the support of the Ontario Arts Council, Screen:Moves invites artists to conceive and create original works for this unique program.
The program operates on a "micro-commissioning" model. We do not program existing works. Instead, we invite artists to submit proposals for new works they would like to create and then support that process of creation. Selected projects will receive a screening fee of $200 and be screened as part of the program in December 2017 at Dancemakers Centre for Creation.
REQUIREMENTS:
–We accept proposals for new works that are conceived and created specifically for this program. Please do not submit works you have already created for consideration.
–Collaborative teams must have at least one artist based in Canada.
–The program is geared specifically to works created with all forms of video (rather than works shot on film).
–Submissions using accessible video technologies like smart phones, iPads, or webcams, are encouraged.
–Completed works should be 4 minutes or less.
–Projects should address or feature the medium of dance in some way.
–Formats can include: experimental, narrative, comedic, documentary and animated works.
SUBMISSION DETAILS:
–Proposals must be submitted via email using the attached form.
–Proposals submitted without the form or with incomplete information are ineligible.
–Proposals must include a link to one previously created video work. The jury will watch a maximum of 4 minutes.

Workshop Description
How do we listen to each other? How do we interact? How do we respond to the landscape around us? How do we engage with time and space? Cultivating attentive awareness, empathetic presence and peripheral vision, this two-day intensive will specifically locate our process in public settings, surrounded by elements of the everyday. An opportunity to deepen our explorations about how we consider, construct, and witness performance in public (non-art) contexts, participants will be invited to experiment with in-situ and in-socius performative practices – infiltrating, interventionist and relational modes of performance – while exploring the multiple and very personalized ways in which we experience and foster intimacy and connection: in ourselves, towards others, and in relation to place.
Workshop Objectives
Through a gradual yet intensive learning process, this workshop will introduce participants to what is involved in the creation of a live action piece, as related to infiltrating or intervention practices that take place in public spaces. Exploring how time and space are intimately connected and linked to how we develop a relationship to the space and people around us, participants will work on presence, precision of intention and direct channeling practices, eventually working with more personalized, unpredictable and precise performative actions and structures.
The workshop will focus on various exercises such as centering, observing and energy channeling in order to experiment with a diversity of performance methods, individual activities and short solo and group presentations. The intention of this workshop is to enable the participants to develop a distinctive practice thus learning to:
–understand some basic principles of performance;
–manifest/communicate an authentic presence; and
–personalize their approach by combining movements, words, images, objects, sound research, etc.
This workshop aims to inspire the creative process of each participant, regardless of their discipline and their artistic creation interests.
General Methodology
Because of a gradual learning process, hands-on exercises, concrete directives, dynamic feedback, constructive commentaries, individual coaching demonstrations, and analysis of basic principles, the participants will discover how to be conscious of the present moment, and experience various states of body/mind in the context of structuring performative actions – in particular within interventionist practices in public spaces.
Pedagogical Approach
The TouVA Collective takes its inspiration from the workshops of Sylvie Tourangeau – founding member of the Collective, and a highly regarded pioneer of performance art in Quebec. Together, we have developed an active pedagogical approach intricately linked with our artistic research by giving form to notions such as dynamic motivation- connection-expansion-action, inter-action (the performative in-between), potentiality of everyday or invisible practices, and th i po tanc oflang ag tolocat p oc andh lpon conn ctwithon ’ pa tic la and niq align ent.
About TouVA Collective
Founded in the spring of 2007, the TouVA Collective (Sylvie Tourangeau, Victoria Stanton and Anne Bérubé) is a Montreal-based performance art trio that has been researching the practice of performance through multiple frameworks and approaches. In addition to presenting performances, conducting workshops, creating dynamic artist talks and offering coaching to artists in a variety of contexts – including international festivals – TouVA is a group of artist-researchers interested in a profound exploration of the performative. Working consistently from a model of exchange and dialogue, their first book, The 7th Sense will be released through Centre SAGAMIE and M:ST in the Fall of 2017.
About M:ST
M:ST’s main activity is the organization and presentation of a biennial performative art festival. This Festival is a collaborative endeavour between several Southern Alberta arts organizations. This collaborative structure allows the Festival to represent each organization’s mandate and audience, while providing opportunities for cross-disciplinary and inter-organizational exchange. The result is a unique participatory context, where artists and audience experience contemporary performative work outside of more traditional festival or gallery models.
M:ST is committed to presenting performative works from a variety of disciplines that reflect current issues and practices in contemporary art. Through exhibitions, performances, and events, M:ST fosters the development of performative art practice among local, national and international artistic communities. M:ST’s role in presenting professional, high quality cultural experiences continues to grow, increasing opportunities for education and critical discourse surrounding contemporary performative practices.

8. EVENT: The 2nd Sipa International Performance Festival 2017

Conceptualized in 2011, the project intends to create a discursive and learning environment between artists and their audience to serve as a platform for artists to react and respond to local and global issues.
“Sipa” is a native sport/game in the Philippines. Literally meaning “kick” in Filipino, the sport sipa requires discipline, focus and the creative coordination of the whole body. The project draws from this practice and initiates a healthy process of cultural exchange that showcases methods, talents and artistry as well as providing a venue to explore creative possibilities. Centered on performance art, the project emphasizes on the idea of movement: movement as motion, movement as a collective action and movement as in the progressive development of ideas. The project looks into and relates the ideas of performance as expression, cultural exchange and solidarity.
The festival looks into performance as discourse and concerns itself with social issues and interests. The project gathers artists from different countries and offers an opportunity for cultural interaction. It allows for the presentation of different and similar ideas and hopefully trigger/promote criticality. Performance and dialogue are the main components of the festival. It intends to provide a venue for critical exchange and the possibility to become a catalyst for change.
The Festival Objectives:
To provide a platform for critical and socially-responsive performances;
To heighten social sensitivities of both the participating artists and the viewing public;
To provide a platform for interaction through cultural performance;
To create a network of artists with communal interests;
To relate performances to different creative methods as forms of solidarity;
To arouse social interests from various stakeholders and mobilize them to become active and socially-responsible members of the society; and
To consolidate creative efforts and amplify the call for just and lasting peace, freedom and social stability.
International Performance Festival: Local and foreign artists are tasked to express their situation and advocacies in the most creative means possible within the realms of visual performance which may range from conceptual to spectacular, solo to collaboration, independent to interactive or instructional, time-bound or simultaneous, stationary or mobile. Performances might also incorporate electronic media like computer, photo, video, graphics and sound.
Workshops on Performance Art: Workshops (two sessions) on performance art will be held for students/young and new performance artists focused on using the body, found objects and/or technology, to be facilitated by the artists from the Tupada Action and Media Art (TAMA) and participating foreign artists.
Art Talks: Unity starts in having an understanding on the artist and its people’s status in his country within the context of his space and time. Art forums discussing Philippine art and society situationers will be held in the host schools to create awareness on performance art and the TAMA core art practice.
Immersions: Community immersions by the participating artists by way of cultural exchanges and interactions with the Laguna people and its environs will be an integral part of the festival. Participating Countries: Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Nepal, USA, China and Philippines.
SIPAF 2017 is a collaboration initiative of the Tupada Action and Media Arts (TAMA), the UCCA University Center for Culture and the Art of PUP Sta. Mesa, and the Arts, Research and Training Institute in Southern Tagalog (ARTISTS), Inc. with 98 B Collaboratory TAMA (Tupada Action and Media Art), is a performance event group, composed of professionals, visual artists, writers, teachers and cultural workers. Establish in 2002. The University Center for Culture and the Arts (UCCA) is PUP’s primary artistic and cultural institution that undertakes programs for the awareness, understanding and appreciation of Filipino culture.
Founded in 1987, ARTIST, Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit and non-government organization that aims to promote culture and the arts by conducting research on culture and by conducting regular cultural training programs and theater performances.

Work With Us – Call for Residency Artists
Residency is a two-year program designed to support artists in developing new work. The program is tailored to the specific needs of each participating artist or collective, and the artistic impulse or idea they wish to explore.
Residency has its roots in R&D (Research & Development) program, established by The Theatre Centre in 1983.
Residency facilitates a highly collaborative artistic process that supports new work led by directors, designers, composers, choreographers, architects, visual artists, or even neurologists. We are looking for good ideas. It encourages artists to create a new work from scratch, or to re-imagine an old idea – an idea that will form the basis of a potentially important work of art.
Depending on the needs of the project, a minimum 2-year commitment is made in order to support long-term development and artistic growth. We emphasize the investigation of the artistic process and encourage artists to take creative risks, enabling them to create not only new works of art, but also new modes of creation for themselves.
Residency provides artists with access to a fully equipped theatre space with a technician, funding, and artistic & producing support.
Time Commitment:
Focused Residency work periods occur in June, August and December. Residency artists are required to work during these times and publicly share the results of – and questions arising from – their process. There is also an opportunity to access one another as resources to further the growth and development of each other’s work.
Proposals should be no more than 3 pages in length and should include:
–Brief history of you or your company
–What is your idea?
–Why does your idea/process require the support of The Theatre Centre Residency?
–How does this idea sit within your overall body of work?
–Support material, ie. video, sound files, photos, etc.
–Support letters optional.

Only successful applicants will be contacted for an interview in November. We have room for two new Residency projects in 2017/18.

11. EVENT: Lilith Performance Studio's 10th Anniversary Performance Dinners

The world's first and only performance studio for visual artists is turning 10 years this fall and is more alive than ever. Since the inception in 2007, Lilith Performance Studio has created over 45 large-scale solo commissions and been engaged in numerous inspiring collaborations and curator missions worldwide. Lilith wants to celebrate this with 10 very unique performance dinners of 5 beloved artists from Lilith's past! YOU ARE INVITED!
Much has changed on the international art scene over the past ten years that Lilith Performance Studio has existed. 2007, performance was a marginal art form; today it is absolutely the hottest and something that all people working in the art field must relate to. The world has finally woken up and realized that we need living art.
The visual artists Elin Lundgren and Petter Pettersson founded Lilith Performance Studio because they saw that there was an uncharted potential in the field of performance art. They wanted to explore what would come out if visual art performance were given the same production conditions as other performing arts, but with the way production work from the visual art. Part of the inspiration the got from the way the former Centre for Contemporary Art Rooseum in Malmö worked with major solo exhibitions. Their goal was to compromise as little as possible, and think everything is possible.
Throughout the years, the audience has gained access to widely different worlds to get acquainted with Lilith's live works. The studio has been transformed into the smallest details for each new artist’s collaboration. Visitors have experienced: An abstract color explosion where the entire room is embedded in color; An 11 - year old boy who opened and operated an art museum with a staff of 10 children; 100 women made-up with traces and marks of domestic abuse in the middle of the Saturday rush in the city centre of Malmö; A space filled with 10 tons of rubbish where the audience had to walk down along narrow paths; An identical copy of a backyard in Brooklyn where nine unique performance masses were held with about fifty "preachers"; A live horror movie in the beech forest of Skåne; Forty knitters on a sloping floor in a meeting with a death metal band.
Lilith's 10th Anniversary Celebration will be a series of performances titled – YOU ARE INVITED, running from September to December, all with the same starting point: An intimate dinner for 150 people. Each artist is completely free to interpret what a dinner may be: A social experiment, a colorful ceremony, a magical circus evening, or a preparation for a big anniversary. The expectations is high for what can happen within the frame of a dinner party offered at Lilith Performance Studio this fall.

Dub poet, activist and professor Lillian Allen and the Belize Project will focus our February exhibition. In addition to this, we will also be showing a range of work by feminist artist/activists.
We are calling for images of socially-engaged community work. What do you do as a feminist, artist and researcher in your own communities?

WIAprojects at Centre for Women’s Studies in Education, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto is showcasing women’s – and especially feminist – socially-engaged community activity in an exhibit in the CWSE Hallway Gallery this coming Feb. 2018. Our expectation is that the works will specifically explore where we, nationally, as women and/or as feminists are situated after Canada 150.
Who are you – Individual? Group? Collective? Are you from a rural area or urban center? How do you respond to and enliven the hopes, wishes, and activities of/in your communities? Who do you work with and how? How have you spoken to or/and facilitated in assisting with meeting the needs of a diverse population or a specific group? Do you have a powerful image that speaks to this work that you do?
We are asking for submissions of printed colour images on good quality photo paper in 4” x 6” (vertical or horizontal) format. You may send up to three images (indicate an order of preference) and we will try and show them all but, if space becomes limited, we may have to choose one. In order to defray costs we are asking for an administrative fee of $25 for the submission of one image ($10 for each individual image beyond the one – up to total of $45 for 3 images) to cover framing, hanging, advertising and administrative costs. Review Procedure
Proposals are selected through a peer review process by the M:ST Programming Committee. Proposals will be selected based on consideration of the following criteria: artistic merit of the proposed project, fit with the M:ST mandate, feasibility of the proposed budget, and the ability of M:ST and its member organizations to provide appropriate space/support for the project.

Established in 1993, FADO Performance Art Centre is a not-for-profit artist-run centre based in Toronto, Canada.
