1. Fado news
April marks the beginning of a new year for Fado -- our 11th year of operations and our 6th of year-round programming.
Our programming schedule for 2004-05 kicks into high gear on June 12 with the presentation of Tanya Mars' major new work, TYRANNY OF BLISS. Inspired by a variety of sources ranging from the 14th Century frescoes of Ambrogio Lorenzetti on the Effects of Good and Bad Government to Fellini’s “Satyricon”, Tanya Mars constructs a modern day social satire with a cast of more than 30 performers. This 7-hour performance will begin at Toronto's Queen's Park with simultaneous tableaux performances taking place at 14 different sites. Tour the sites on foot or encounter the work in the intimate confines of the black and white stretch limousines that will pick up and drop off passengers at some of the sites. More details in the next Fado e-list!
This week Fado's Performance Art Curator, Paul Couillard, travels to Finland with partner and Fado Board member Ed Johnson to participate in Là-bas_ Space Contentions, a performance art symposium. They will also present installment of their ongoing DUORAMA series in spaces in Helsinki, Turku and Lahti.

6. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: "Silence" Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre (Kingston)
Deadline: May 1, 2004; Source: Modern Fuel
Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre is calling for exhibition and project proposals from artists and curators addressing the theme of silence for upcoming presentation as part of Modern Fuel Gallery programming. We welcome proposals across visual and time-based disciplines including painting, sculpture, print, drawing, performance, installation, video, sound, etc..
As a historical and contemporary condition of oppression, silence enfolds multiple political subtexts &Mac246; silence as systemic racism, unspoken power over another, silence as the unnamed, the taboo; conversely, silence conjures more explicit interpretations &Mac246; the act of silencing or being silenced, silence as regulated speech, one-minute-of-silence as remembrance, silence as speechlessness. Equally, silence speaks to and of its antitheses: voice, protest, resistance, song. The equation, however, is not as straightforward as silence/bad and speech/good &Mac246; think of quiet support or accusatory words. Silence and speech are located on a dimensional continuum where various degrees of communication are possible.
Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre facilitates the presentation and interpretation of visual and time-based arts that explore wide-ranging aesthetics and a broad scope of formal and socio-cultural questions. We encourage proposals both from artists residing within the region and outside these boundaries, and program Modern Fuel Gallery according to a 50/50 split. (Our region spans an approximate radius of 100 km around Kingston.)
Submissions must include the following:
1. A cover letter introducing your proposal
2. 10 numbered slides of related work with a slide list OR a 5-min. video in
VHS/DVD format OR a CD-ROM
3. An artist C.V.
4. A brief statement about your proposal and its relevance to the theme
5. A self-addressed, stamped envelope

11. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Venice Biennale Theatre (Italy)
Deadline: June 30, 2004; Source: International Association of Performance Art Organizers
<apao.smufsa.nu>
LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA
INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL
2005 edition
Direction: Romeo Castellucci
For 2005 the Venice Biennale Theatre is planning a new section devoted to artists and theatre companies worldwide who have still not shown their work, but whose work conceals future trends. This section aims to underscore contradictions in the field of drama by exploring all those forms that raise questions concerning representation itself. We wish moreover to see whether we can detect a vital energy that will allow drama to survive in the present day and age. This edition of the Biennale intends leaving the spirit of dry land behind and addressing the sea. In this way we'll be tackling danger and non-closure. This edition intends breaking the traditional pattern in order to build inventions of radically new shapes. Our concern with places all over the world, however, does not amount to a kind of mapping of world theatre. It is rather a matter of investigating specific expressive tendencies. We will therefore be accepting shows, with any theme, mode and length whatsoever. Only written applications of your proposals will be considered, including videos of your most recent work. We do not wish to examine biogs, academy references, stage, workshops, articles, but only your project and your way of working as individual artists and as a company. The selection will be based exclusively on your expressive calibre and artistic ideas. The results will be communicated to all applicants. If your proposal is assessed favourably, we will ask to be able to come and attend one of your performances. This is an essential criterion before a possible invitation to bring your work to the Venice Biennale. All applications should be sent to Teatro Comandini Via Serraglio 22, 47023 Cesena, Italy by 30/06/2004. The material sent will not be returned. There will not be given further explanations beyond what is written here.

13. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Dangerous Curve (USA)
Deadline: ongoing; Source: Kathryn Hargreaves
Dangerous Curve
Los Angeles, CA USA
Performance art, video, installations, experimental music.
Dangerous Curve is a new Downtown Los Angeles experimental exhibition
and performance art space committed to supporting visionary emerging
artists of all ages, by emphasizing one-person shows of risky,
intelligent work that is not necessarily commercially viable nor
currently popular. Dangerous Curve is also a new venue for performance
artists, with performance-exhibits, monthly performance-art events, and
an annual summer performance-art festival planned.
Dangerous Curve is looking for performance artists and experimental
musicians for their monthly Performance Art and Experimental Music
Nights. We will give preference to work that is, in the words of Jacki
Apple, "radical content in radical form.'' We want work that pushes
the envelope, not pure dance, singing, or theatre.
Submission format: DVDs/CDs/URLs preferred. We can handle videotapes
and slides, but not to your best advantage. A written description may
even suffice; you can write before sending anything.
Deadline: Ongoing.

14. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: "Wild Gift" (UK)
Deadline: not indicated; Source: Artsadmin e-digest issue 120
WILD GIFT is an exhibition of live art and its documentation, provisionally scheduled for late 2004. The performances will take place in a variety of locations, all or most of them in East London. Documentation will be shown in an East London gallery which will function as a central focus point for the show. We are making a call for artists whose work has a strong sense of the theatrical, even the melodramatic, and a sense of how a superficially light presentation can reveal serious content. We will include works by artists from a non-live art background, and whose work is performative but not necessarily performance based. Our intention is that live art, and these pieces, be seen as on a par with any other visual art and approached in an equally serious way. We are aware of and aim to encourage an exchange between practices, paying particular attention to that between visual art, performance and Modern Burlesque. A 'site specific' approach will be encouraged. Available venues will be suited to artists according to the content and demands of their work.

This publication grew out of a research project by Nicole Gingras, a Montreal-based independent curator, critic, publisher and media arts event organizer. Her research began in the summer of 2002, as part of a six-month residency at Artexte Information Centre. Having identified various acoustic components in visual and media arts in Canada, the author shares her reflections on this exploratory approach to an art form at the junction of music, visual and performing arts. Orchestrating key critical essays and never before published texts by 19 authors on events, exhibitions and individual practices, this anthology uncovers and examines the presence of sound and its listening spaces in contemporary Canadian art since the mid-eighties. A CD produced by Éditions Nicole Gingras accompanies the book.

Le son dans l’art contemporain canadien
Sous la direction de Nicole Gingras. Montréal, Éditions Artextes. 2003. 240 p.
ISBN : 2-9802870-9-1. Le livre est accompagné d’un CD. ISBN : 2-9805019-4-8. 34.95$
Textes de : Diana Burgoyne, Tagny Duff, Jean-Pierre Gauthier, Raymond Gervais, Nicole Gingras, Colin Griffiths, Steve Heimbecker, Christof Migone, Gordon Monahan, James Partaik, Hélène Prévost, Nicolas Reeves, Jocelyn Robert, R. Murray Schafer, Tom Sherman, Alexandre St-Onge, Michèle Waquant, Hildegard Westerkamp et Gayle Young.

19. EVENT: "LOST: An Exploration of Trust, Love and True Connection"
April 13-16, 2004; Source: Instant Coffee
appointments are made on one-on-one basis, each lasting from a minimum of 1
hour to a maximum of 4 hours
throughout downtown Toronto
For more information, email info@trueloveproject.com;
www.trueloveproject.com
Without any preliminary contact except an exchange of cell phone numbers,
participants will collaborate with New York conceptual love artist Kathe
Izzo in an elaborate plan of losing and finding each other through love,
telepathy and a system of phone calls, cryptic gifts and hidden messages.
Presented by Artemis and hosted by the Gladstone Hotel, these walks are on a
one-to-one basis and are made by appointment only between April 13-16, 2004.
Appointments to participate in LOST can be set up directly with the artist
via email at info@trueloveproject.com.
LOST, an adjunct to Izzo’s global TRUE LOVE PROJECT
(www.trueloveproject.com), in which she pledges to freely fall in love with
her audience -- and for that matter, the world -- one day, one lover at a
time, unconditionally and with unmitigated passion, is a traveling
performance designed for an audience of one (or in special cases, small
groups of friends or family members). After setting a date, time and
place, Izzo projects her love through the modern appendage of the cell phone
to complete strangers, and through this ephemeral connection, channels a
mutual intuition to enable them to “find” each other. What this means
exactly is as varied as the definitions and experiences of love.
“This is the idea – that we, on the food of this love – even though we don’t
really know each other – can build this together. I’m not exploiting what
we have; really, I just want to be able to work with it like a plastic
element. Love, intimacy, instead of paint stone or wood . . . running on a
certain kind of intensity or connection, like fuel.”
- Kathe Izzo 2003
“Her love may have been contrived, but it was genuine, . . . she considers
herself "a cross between a prostitute and the Dalai Lama," and she indeed
delivers a combination of spiritual companionship and sensual
enlightenment.”
-Tristan Taormino, Village Voice February 20, 2004
Poet and conceptual artist Kathe Izzo’s chosen medium is love: childhood,
motherhood, sex, community. The TRUE LOVE PROJECT has created a stir
throughout the US and Europe. Izzo’s conceptual love pieces have been
featured in MANIFESTA 2002 in Frankfurt, Germany, ONI Gallery/Boston, and
last year’s PSYGEOCONFLUX in NYC and Miami’s Surreal Saturday series at PS
742.
Her poetry, memoirs and short fiction have been published in numerous
journals and anthologies including AROUSED, edited by Karen Finley, and THE
OUTLAW BIBLE OF AMERICAN POETRY (Thundersmouth Press). Transcripts of some
of her early performances have been included in the Jack Smith collection of
writings, MEET ME AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POOL, published by Serpent's Tail
Press and edited by J. Hoberman, film critic for The Village Voice.
Appointments to participate in LOST can be set up directly with the artist
via email at info@trueloveproject.com. LOST will take place throughout
downtown Toronto between April 13-16, 2004. For more information, call
305.324.0585 or write info@trueloveproject.com.
